Robbie Bushe’s brilliant solo show 'Living Rooms' closes this Sunday 7th June. Then, very excitingly, Robbie’s next exhibition outside of Scotland will be the prestigious Royal Academy Summer Exhibition which opens in London on 16th June.
Robbie has one painting in the RA Summer Exhibition, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing it in London. But you can see 22 brilliant works by Robbie here at Irving Gallery in Oxford, so come along very soon to catch this show before it closes at 4pm on Sunday!

These beautiful painting are float mounted and framed in white painted wood frames, and they are delightful. The translucency of watercolour lends itself brilliantly to the cutaway scenes of buildings where you can almost see through the layered spaces.

I'm sharing some of the ten beautiful drawings by Heather McAteer, available now exclusively through Irving Gallery. And I'm very excited to announce that in March/April 2027 we will be exhibiting Heather’s most recent work in a solo show, which will be presented concurrently with a solo show by fellow Irving Gallery Artist Louisa Longstaff-Scales.
Originally from Belfast, Heather McAteer (b.1968) specialises in graphite drawings which explore themes of loss, trauma and personal and collective memory reflecting on her formative years in Northern Ireland. She studied Fine Art at The University of Ulster (BA) and The University of Reading (MFA) where she graduated with a distinction.
Heather’s most recent drawings explore images of the seas, tides and shifting shorelines as metaphors for instability, remembrance and renewal. Working with graphite directly onto the pages and covers of old books she has found and sometimes been gifted, she layers new imagery over the traces of existing text and illustration, creating palimpsest surfaces where histories overlap and time seems to drift.

Standing in front of one of Robbie’s large-scale canvases is a thrilling experience. Monumental in scale and depth, the towns, cities, streets, houses, gardens and tunnels play out in a great soap-opera of life. Swathes of masonry, earth and tarmac are sliced away to give very private, voyeuristic and extraordinary vignettes of everyday existence. Records are strewn across a teenage bedroom floor; a pianist plays a symphony for only themself at a grand piano in bare tenement flat; a classroom of kids and a teacher – inspiring or droning … we aren’t quite aware which […]. The hive of busy activity and the importance of the mundane reflects to us our ‘going-about-it’ lifestyle. We are also flooded with memories... of our childhood homes; granny’s attic; the smell of tenement stars; and the garden after the rain. It’s all here, this cornucopia of life. It’s all laid out for us in a textbook of ‘how to’ or perhaps ‘how it is’ or ‘could be’.
The analogy of textbook is deliberate, of course. The cut-aways - for peeping into - follow scientific diagrams with influences from Workshop Manuals and comics for boys such as Eagle. […] This technique is supremely effective. The planographic and scientific nature of investigation is the very nostalgic hook that brings us into these worlds, and our natural nosiness has us captivated as we look into every nook and cranny. Robbie’s formative years from childhood to student-digs are told in short stories within the wider works and perhaps we all see elements of ourselves in there too. Sunday afternoons in a quiet house with each family member engaging in a different activity in a different room. Squabbles and tenderness emanating from figures in close isolation and proximity with an understanding of acceptance and a hint of otherness.” - Colin R Greenslade, RSA Director, 2025.
"I’ve gradually realised over the years that I’m not really painting architecture. I’m painting people in close proximity to one another. The buildings are really just devices for revealing that.
Once you remove the walls, you suddenly see all these parallel lives happening simultaneously. Somebody cooking. Somebody arguing. Somebody lonely. Somebody pretending to be intellectual at a dinner party.
I’ve always loved old cutaway diagrams, technical manuals and Eagle comic illustrations where walls disappear and you suddenly understand how an entire world functions inside.
There’s probably a slightly voyeuristic aspect to the work too. That feeling of walking through a city at night and catching glimpses through uncurtained windows. You only see fragments of lives, but your imagination completes the rest.
I’m not usually trying to tell one coherent story. The paintings are more like accumulations of remembered fragments. Films from childhood. Student flats. Art schools. Demolition sites. Snatches of conversation.
So even when the spaces become invented or impossible, I hope there’s still something emotionally recognisable about them.
Ultimately the paintings are really attempts to hold lots of human experience together simultaneously. Memory, anxiety, absurdity, routine, loneliness, comedy.

'Living Rooms' is Edinburgh-based artist Robbie Bushe's first solo show outside of Scotland in 20 years, and I'm very excited to be showing these wonderful paintings here in Oxford.
Robbie Bushe RSA has received national recognition, including prizes at the John Moores Painting Prize, the Contemporary British Painting Prize, and the Jackson’s Painting Prize. In 2023, he was awarded the RSA Blackadder Houston Mid-Career Painting Award, which enabled a sustained period of studio work and the production of this ambitious new series of paintings presented in ‘Living Rooms’.
These paintings unfold as expansive, cutaway worlds in which cities, interiors, and subterranean spaces are opened up to reveal layered scenes of everyday life. Across each canvas, moments of domestic routine, private activity, and remembered experience sit alongside imagined narratives, inviting the viewer to look slowly and closely as details and connections begin to emerge over time.
Bushe draws on the visual language of technical diagrams, mid-century cutaway illustrations, and comic imagery, creating works that balance clarity with curiosity. The viewer is drawn into these constructed environments, moving across their surfaces and piecing together fragments of story and space.

Until 7th June
This smaller painting in oil on panel is one of my personal favourites in the exhibition. It’s such a curious composition with two buildings, one floating above the other, connected by the continuous chimney that runs through both buildings and through the void between them. The buildings are teeming with life: in one room we see a group of people at a dinner party and then above them, a band in suits practising with their guitars in hand, maybe reminiscent of the Beatles. And in another room we see somebody looking out, and perhaps there's a school room full of students too, and then we see a woman getting into or out of her bath. All of life is here, from the basement to the attic.
I’ve noticed that with several of Robbie‘s pictures in the show we see spectators looking in on the scene right at the front edge of the picture, peering into the scene laid out in front of them. Here we have a mother and her child looking into the buildings as if this is all some sort of spectacle for their entertainment, which reminds me a little of those evenings when you're out walking and it’s already dark outside but people haven’t yet closed their curtains, and as you walk the streets, you just get glimpses of other lives, of what’s going on behind other people's front doors, and I suppose that’s a little bit of that sense of neighbourly voyeurism happening here too.
I love the colour palette of this work as well, with these touches of a fiery orange in the fireplaces, and the pinks, soft greens and blues all enlivening the painting. It’s a beautiful work. Of course images don’t do it justice so I do hope that if you can, you’ll come and look at this and all the other paintings in this amazing show before it closes on 7th June. This week the gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday (Wednesday & Thursday afternoons, 1pm to 4pm; then Friday, Saturday & Sunday 11am to 4pm). So there’s plenty of opportunity to come and see this brilliant exhibition of works by Robbie Bushe.
