Our monthly Japanese island trip for May took us back to Okinawa Main Island. Just a quick weekend trip last week, combined with a commercial shoot.
Even though we’ve visited Okinawa Main Island countless times, we usually try to avoid it when possible for many reasons — for example, reaching truly idyllic spots without a sign of human presence often requires a few hours of driving, or bringing your own SUP or packraft to access beaches that are only reachable by water. At that point, you might as well take a one-hour flight to the Yaeyama or Miyako Islands, where stunning deserted beaches with easy access are abundant.
That said, the cultural side of Okinawa Main Island is always interesting. Not only can you experience the rich traditional culture, but also the unique influences brought by the US bases — something you don’t see on the other islands of Okinawa Prefecture. (Okinawa consists of around 160 islands, with 48 currently inhabited.)
This time we got to experience authentic delicious Mexican food at a taqueria where Spanish is spoken first, and English second, with Japanese a truly foreign language. 🌮😋

A beautiful balmy day in May suddenly turned into a downpour that no weather forecast could predict. We only got a warning on our phones once the rain clouds rapidly formed and approached in no time on the radar. As we love the reflections that rain brings to the city, we kept shooting — and had an absolute blast! 😄

Here’s a heartwarming elopement session from last week.
May in central Tokyo is such a beautiful time for elopements before the city slips into June’s rainy season — when it doesn’t always rain, but the weather forecast becomes useless — followed by the relentlessly hot and extremely muggy days and nights of July and August (especially August!).

Bits and pieces from our annual trip to the Mornington Peninsula, Janine’s home turf. 🇦🇺
Somehow, of our last 20-something trips to Melbourne, we ended up having the best weather ever — and this was in late April to early May. Melbourne weather never stops being unpredictable 😆
As usual, we were busy catching up with family and friends, along with a few commercial shoots. For those we didn’t get to see this time, let’s hopefully catch up next year!

Back in Tokyo and straight back behind the camera to capture another unforgettable “Yes!” moment in the heart of the city. There’s something very special about photographing surprise proposals — the nervous excitement before the question, the split second when everything changes, and the raw emotions that unfold afterwards. No matter how many proposal shoots we document, every couple brings a completely different energy and story, which is what makes this kind of photography so meaningful: witnessing a once-in-a-lifetime scene unfold in real time.
Being trusted to preserve such an intimate chapter of someone’s journey together is something we never take for granted.

Congratulations B&B! ㊗️🍾

Some more love-filled moments from April in central Tokyo. Engagement sessions spent wandering through pockets of nature, ending in that atmospheric izakaya evening light. Can’t believe April is almost over.

Another “she said yes” moment 💍
Shot among azaleas in central Tokyo—one of spring’s longest-lasting blooms, though still never long enough. Late April is almost here, so the Azalea season is wrapping up… but this moment? Forever. ✨

Gogo Island in April 🍋🍊🌊
Our monthly Japanese island trip for April took us to Gogo Island (Gogoshima) in the Seto Inland Sea. Just 10 minutes by ferry from Matsuyama in Shikoku, this small island is a paradise for citrus maniacs like us, with countless orchards growing a wide variety of top-notch citrus fruits.
Visiting in early April meant that, along with iconic Setouchi lemons, Hassaku oranges and blood oranges, we were still able to enjoy Setoka — our favorite among 40+ varieties of Japanese oranges — even though many swear Beni Madonna orange is the best (incredibly juicy with that jelly-like texture)… we respectfully disagree 😆

Beyond sampling the island’s amazing citrus from unmanned honesty stands, we also enjoyed fresh craft beers brewed with local citrus fruits — our favorite was a hazy IPA made with Beni Madonna oranges!

We also had the best affogato, where they kindly treated us to some “Hime Koharu”, a super sweet and rare citrus variety.

Our base on the island was, a beautifully renovated 80-year-old traditional wooden house, defined by its thoughtful design and remarkable attention to detail.

We’ve added Gogoshima to our Islands of Japan website—check it out via the link in bio or Google “Janine islands Japan.”

A surprise proposal captured among azalea blooms a few days ago. Azaleas are now reaching full bloom across central Tokyo, with some late-blooming varieties just beginning to unfold — perfect timing for moments like this.
