If I close my eyes, I can still imagine this meadow in 2024. How my hands felt when sliding across the blooming camas. The air was sweet and full of buzzing. This year, I still felt those same camas, their bulbs dried, exposed, and crushed in deep tire tracks.
We cannot continue down this path. We need legal protections. We needed them decades ago, and at this point, it’s nationally embarrassing. We’re losing our home.

This species is both toxic and poisonous, and is a known invasive species in our region! It rapidly creates dense, monoculture understories, shading out beneficial native plants, such as the Western Trillium, Broadleaved Star-Flower, and Mountain Sweet Cicely observed underneath this invasion. The good news is action can be taken, quickly and effectively! Small plants can be pulled, and larger plants can be cut down using loppers, getting at the taproot. The seed bank is short lived, and with follow-up planting / seeding of appropriate native species, success can be achieved.

The topic was Eggleaf Spurge (Euphorbia oblongata). This is a brand-new invasive species in British Columbia, under the EDRR (Early Detection, Rapid Response) management category. The goal is still eradication, given the low numbers and few populations. That said, we can only respond to invasions of EDRR species that we know exist, and that’s key!
Look for stems covered in hairs, flat flower clusters which are yellowish-green (yellow bracts at their base followed by a whorl of yellow-green leaves), and their egg-shaped leaves, with finely toothed margins! 🔍
How can you help? Download the Report Invasives BC App. When you notice this plant in your day to day life, you can select that species, snap a photo, note the estimated invasion size, add any extra comments, and then submit it. Those reports go directly to the province, and then action can be taken! This is especially important if you live in the Capital Regional District, as this species is rapidly spreading here.
If we cannot eradicate this species, we will repeat the same pattern again and again. The horticultural trade introduces a new invasive species, and it spreads. What we plant can and does escape. This was the case for Shining Geranium, for example. In 2020, it was an EDRR species, and now it is in the Regional Containment / Control category - It spread rapidly, beyond our ability to eradicate it. We have a chance to eradicate this species, Eggleaf Spurge, and we must act now!

This native meadow was installed last fall, and after only a few months of growth and micro-weeding, has transformed into this beautiful collage of biodiversity. Yellow Monkeyflower, Great Camas, White Hawkweed, Broad-Leaved Stonecrop, Seablush, Spring Gold, Fools’s Onion, Howell’s Pussytoes, White Fawn Lily, Chocolate Lily, Barestembiscuitroot, Small-Flowered Blue-Eyed Mary, Pacific Sanicle, Blue-Wildrye, and more!
The Thimble Berry, June Plum seedlings, and Selfheal clumps were retained, and the non-native vegetation was pulled / smothered
The site has old Garry Oak trees, which is a promising indicator that in the recent past, many of these species would have been present. Plant friends have been united. Garry Oak trees cannot be Garry Oak ecosystem by themselves. They need all the herbaceous species to create vibrant understories! Native pollinators are back on-site. This property now has some of the only known observations of many of these species in this area of Ladysmith - That’s huge!
While it is impressive now, by next year, when the Spring Gold is flowering, the White Fawn Lily produce leaves, the Broad-Leaved Stonecrop has matted, the moss layers have spread, it is going to be breathtaking!

Today, we cleared some more invasive species from a private property in the City of Nanaimo! This included Spanish Bluebells, English Ivy, Daphne, Himalayan Blackberry, and Bur Parsley. We went through a previously worked area, removing any regrowth, to support the native plants, sown and planted there in the fall and winter. We then began to chip-away at new areas, beginning the management process there. It was a warm, very productive day!

There were several species observed with few individuals, and in a some cases, single individuals persisting. While none observed were species at risk, many are now rare within the City of Nanaimo. That said, this data then becomes incredibly valuable. We now have a snapshot of what is present, which becomes part of the property’s history. You can catch when species disappear, when they need assistance, and identify more sensitive areas on the property, to tread carefully in, for example. It’s a valuable tool to have!
