My flight was delayed almost five hours.
While waiting in the lounge, getting some work done, I took a break and scrolled through my phone. I came across posts about the man of Indian descent who tragically passed away in an ER in Alberta. What struck me wasn’t just the loss — it was the comments. Instead of condolences, I saw people debating whether immigrants deserve medical care. Whether he was “Canadian enough.”
As a child of immigrants — and an immigrant to Canada myself — I couldn’t stop thinking:
What if people spoke about my parents this way?
I boarded the plane and sat beside a lovely older couple from Paris, Ontario, on their way to New Zealand via Vancouver. They had already missed a connection, so we talked. She had worked as a nurse tech for years. I told her I was a plastic surgery resident. Eventually, I put my headphones on and started editing a research paper.
Then we heard it:
“Medical emergency. Is there a doctor on board?”
The call light went on. I went to help.
I checked on him every 30 minutes for the next hour and a half.
When I returned to my seat, my new friend looked at me and said:
“Thank you for being here today.”
In that moment, nothing else mattered.
Not religion.
Not race.
Not where I was born.
All that mattered was that there was someone on board who could help.
And the quiet truth is — if this immigrant hadn’t been on that plane, there may not have been a doctor on board at all.
We can debate borders and policies endlessly.
But in moments of crisis, humanity comes first.
As a society, we need to be kinder to one another.
Care doesn’t ask for a passport.
The past decade has been a whirlwind of transitions - from one city to another, navigating the worlds of undergraduate and graduate studies, medical school, and residency. This period has been marked by major life events, both joyous and sorrowful, as friends and family members embarked on new chapters, getting married and having children, while also grappling with the loss of loved ones.
Serendipitous moments have led me to explore various corners of the world, from dog sledding in the Canadian Arctic to dancing in the dunes of Azerbaijan to solo traveling the deep seas of Greece while island hopping with world-famous DJs. These experiences have expanded my horizons in ways I could never have imagined as a child.
My dreams have not only been realized but have often exceeded my wildest expectations. I have had the privilege of speaking on stages around the world, from virtual classrooms to a crowd in an Olympic Stadium in Germany. I have found myself in the same rooms, and even on the same stages, as esteemed individuals such as,,, and – encounters that I would have never fathomed.
This decade has been marked by hard work and resilience, with a healthy dose of luck and opportunities that have ultimately led me to discover my passion for plastic and reconstructive surgery. What once felt like mere stages of life have now coalesced into a transformative journey, with each chapter contributing to the tapestry of my experiences.
As I turn thirty, I recognize that some of my greatest stories have been collected in shoes that never quite fit right. Yet, my twenties have been everything I needed them to be, including their eventual conclusion. The friends, the values, the memories, and the love – these are the compasses that will guide me towards more serendipitous moments in the years to come.

For this past month, I have had the opportunity to be a Traumatology Resident.
My first trauma came in as a motorcycle crash at 3 am. I thought I was ready but little did I know- I froze. Seeing a person fighting for their life as an entire trauma activation was called.
A deep breathe in, and we began the ABCDEs of resuscitation:
A- Airway (Is it intact? Do they need to be intubated?)
B- Breathing (Any difficulty breathing?)
C- Circulation (Are they bleeding anywhere? What's their pressure)
D- Disability (What's their GCS?)
E- Exposure (Look at every part of their body to ensure we don't miss an injury)
Trauma by trauma, this algorithm was engrained within me. At the same time, deep down, I could feel the patient's pain, emotions, sense of suffering, but also their sense of hope.
Hope that they will be able to make it through this difficult time.
Hope that their family will see them walk out of the trauma bay alive.
The nights were long (often with no sleep), but they probably felt even longer for the loves ones looking over their injured family member.
As I write this post after a 29 hour shift of no sleep, I am grateful for my health, family, colleagues, and loved ones.
I am grateful to each patient that provided me with the opportunity to care for them.
For I will never take any of that for granted.
And please remember to be safe out there by taking an extra few seconds while driving.

Today, I completed my first month of being a doctor (?)
Wild to say the least!
I couldn't be more grateful to be in this wonderful field of plastic and reconstructive surgery alongside incredible colleagues, mentors, and teachers.
As well, I am so thankful for the incredible co-residents in other fields such as ENT, Vascular, Ortho, Urology, and the list goes on.
1 month down, many more to go 🎉🎉

And God guiding the way ahead.

and the newly minted DR. SACHAL.

Brigadier Mohinder Singh
He lived a royal life for 95 years on his own terms and conditions and even till his last breath, he remained mentally agile.
Retiring in 1979 as a Brigadier, when there were only 250 serving Brigadiers in the entire Indian Army, he lived life to the fullest.
Graceful and elegantly dressed, a Connoisseur of scotch, he loved golf and minced no words in addressing issues of concern.
A giver by nature, he raised his 2 sisters and brother after Partition and then his own 4 sons. He was a man with a heart of gold and during his entire life, he helped others and never worried about money.
As the President of the Indian Ex Servicemen League, he left no stones unturned to get their demands met and was instrumental in acquiring medical facilities for all veterans from the Central government, especially for those with burns and amputations.
He has left for heavenly abode and he will surely be missed, but his legacy of helping the needy and sticking to principles of duty beyond self, honesty and integrity will be emulated by our family for generations to come.
On October 11, 2001, a then 34 year old and 31 year old decided to immigrate to Canada with their 8 year old and 11 month for a better life.
As I approach the 30s in a few years, I cannot even fathom making such a selfless decision to leave behind all comforts, a secure job, family, and friends just to make sure the kids have an abundant amount of opportunities available to them.
These are the actions that our parents took for my brother and I. The past 20 years in this country have taught us all the power of community and unity in becoming the best versions of ourselves.
We are so grateful to have such selfless parents who have gone above and beyond what we could have possibly envisioned with our lives. As well, I could not possibly ask for a better brother who's representing Canada on the international platform.
Thank you, Papa and Mama, for giving us this life. We will forever be grateful. Here's to the next 20 🥂
