Sure, the guidebooks will show you Las Ramblas in Barcelona and flamenco in Seville but here’s what nobody tells you until you actually arrive:
1️⃣ Spain isn’t just one landscape - it’s many.
From green, rain-soaked Galicia to the sun-scorched villages of Andalucía, Spain changes fast. Languages shift, food changes, and regional pride runs deep. Travel a few hours and everything feels different.
2️⃣ Locals don’t eat what you think they do.
Paella is regional (and rarely eaten for dinner), sangria is mostly for visitors, and the best meals are often hiding in no-name bars with zero English menus. The real magic? Tinto de verano, late lunches, and tapas so good you won’t remember what you ate before it.
3️⃣ Time runs on a different schedule (particularly in the south)
Shops close midday. Dinner starts at 9pm (or later). And flamenco shows don’t start til midnight. Embrace the siesta to stand a chance of keeping up.
4️⃣ The most memorable places aren’t famous.
Medieval villages, near-empty national parks, forgotten coastlines and towns that don’t trend on Instagram. You can even find bars that serve cowboys on horseback, so they don’t need to dismount.
5️⃣ There’s always more to discover.

If Paris in April is an amuse-bouche, then by May in Paris, the meal is well underway. The days grow longer, the café chairs spill onto the pavements, and the city puts on a show.
Simply put, it’s one of my favourite times of year in the capital.

Pack a blanket and watch French classics under the stars. Films in French with subtitles, so brush up your schooldays vocab—or just enjoy the vibe.
🖼️ See the museums by starlight at Nuit des Musées
On 17th May, Paris museums open their doors late into the night—for free. Wander the Louvre by moonlight, or duck into lesser-known gems like Musée Zadkine or Musée de la Vie Romantique.
🌹 Smell the roses in bloom at Parc de Bagatelle
May is rose season, and nowhere wears them better than this tucked-away spot in the Bois de Boulogne. Quiet, elegant, and perfumed.
🎭 Catch the Jazz Festival at Saint-Germain-des-Prés
Held mid-May, this soulful celebration brings jazz to chapels, cafés, and streets in one of Paris’s most charming quarters.
🛍️ Browse Les Puces de Saint-Ouen flea market
Wander Europe’s largest flea market and hunt for vintage treasures, antique books, or a just-because silk scarf. Sundays are buzzy, with live music and street food too.
🍓 What to eat in Paris in May
– Order anything with white asparagus—it’s fleeting and fabulous.
– Nab a wild strawberry or fraises des bois tart at, the city’s oldest patisserie.
