A story about a dentist who moved to the UK. Many don’t recognise the incredible privilege which is practicing what we studied for. Valentina show us, on May’s issue, how this is such a powerful limitation and how it affects many other aspects of her life in England. And how she decided to abandon her career.

Valentina Restrepo was a dentist in Medellín, then a dentist-in-waiting in Manchester, grinding through UK registration exams, grey winters and years of unexplained infertility. She had a plan, and the plan was not working anymore.
In this essay, she writes about the moment her body refused to go any further, the conversation that changed everything and the life she found, entirely by accident, on the other side of giving up. She is now a language teacher in Bali, seven months pregnant, and, by her own account, happier than she has any right to be.

All of us caring for children should contribute not only to their health, but also to their safety and their ability to seek help when needed.

One small ritual I’ve introduced, especially when confirming stability with removable appliances, is asking children to tell me their full address and their parents’ phone number.

Of course, I already have this information in their files, but the purpose is different: I want parents to pause for a moment and confirm that their child is able to communicate essential information in case of an emergency.

While they speak with their appliances in place, I can also assess their clarity and confidence in communicating.

It’s a small gesture, but one that can raise awareness and encourage preparedness in a meaningful way.
Some of the earliest orthodontic signs are not always in the teeth.

Dr Inês Do Carmo, our orthodontist with a focus on paediatric orthodontics, explains that mouth breathing, snoring, or pushing the tongue against the front teeth can all point to underlying orthodontic concerns.

Even early tooth loss or constant tiredness can sometimes be linked to how your child is breathing and developing.

This is why early assessment at The Beresford Dental Clinic in Victoria can make a real difference.

Sometimes you just need someone who understands how canines code pre-maxila development.
This teen was lucky we caught her still growing and despite her molars showing a molar class II, her profile was developing an uncomfortable convex shape.
Sharing this beautiful case development over the weekend 🫶🏼✨

P.s she has no lip fillers, this was all trusting the process and following a good ortho plan
Well, I know this is not about teeth but it’s about being human. Before we are professionals, we are people and now parents! With flaws, fears, and challenges. I believe that embracing our humanity, rather than hiding it, is a true superpower. The world might value efficiency and predictability, but it’s in our moments of vulnerability that we truly connect and grow. Including with our patients.
Babies are the perfect example of this. And if they don’t show you it’s okay to fail, you might be babying wrong.
To my fellow colleagues who are struggling, whether it’s a tough night or a high fever, know that you’re doing your best. You’re are indeed a health professional but you’re also a person holding it together for yourself and those who you care for ♥️
Got inspired by this trend 🤰🏻
Working with and for the Latin community has been such a pleasure and privilege. I really resonate with their values and culture and I’ve met the most incredible people. I was part of Alejandro’s story but he and his family have for sure became part of mine ♥️
You know that awful habit of defining people by what they do for a living? I’ve always found it pretty terrible. Sure, I’ll admit it can be useful. Like when I’m booking a hotel or at the bank, “Dr.” in front of my name suddenly opens doors. But still, it fascinates me that in 2025 we’re still clinging to this. Some of the wealthiest, most successful people in the world are athletes, artists, entrepreneurs and they don’t have any kind of traditional academic background. Yet we keep parading our endless titles and diplomas as if they’re the only proof of worth.

Personally, I put zero stock in academic credentials. I’ve met consultants, professors, “specialists” and more often than not, they’re just very good at appearing like they know what they’re doing. That performance, in itself, is their real art.

So maybe it’s time we stop introducing ourselves as “Dr. X” in everyday life. Honestly, it feels pretentious (and a bit sad), and it only reinforces the idea that who we are is defined by what we do for work.

And for anyone who’s met me in the clinic: yes, orthodontics is part of my profession but it’s not my whole identity. I’m also an artisan, the creative director of a sustainable fashion brand and editor-in-chief of an online magazine.

Allow me to inspire you: be more than one thing. Outgrow your academic title. Nurture the personal talents and passions that make you you. Because really, you know how many dentists, doctors, or professors are out there?

Do you do anything professionally other than your “main job”?
Swipe through to see how restoring proper upper jaw volume and position impacts the entire face:

👁️Eyes – With more support under the eyelids, the eyes look more open, balanced, and lifted. The tired, droopy appearance fades as the iris centers and scleral show reduces.

💋 Lips – A once-flat upper lip gains volume and definition. Balanced jaw support gives the lips natural projection and harmony with the rest of the face.

🌬️ Breathing – A narrow palate and underdeveloped midface once forced mouth breathing. After expansion, a wider, lower palate supports proper nasal airflow and healthier breathing patterns.

💆‍♀️ Chin & Face Shape – As facial support improves, the chin softens and blends more naturally. The overall face appears rounder, smoother, and more proportionate.

These structural changes aren’t just cosmetic — they reflect deeper functional improvements that affect breathing, expression, and confidence.

Many parents come to my appointment with their little ones asking for a second opinion.
Not rarely they share their child primary orthodontic assessment concluded it would be better to wait for all the baby teeth to be gone.

I couldn’t disagree more. The moment a problem is spotted I don’t see any reason to do not solve it straight away. This is the only way to prevent the whole masticatory system to develop more severe symptoms and harder to fix consequences.

Plus, children are usually the most cooperative patients. More than teenager or adults, trust me
