I believe people follow lies, because they’re comforting. They revolve around you, they make you out to be the good guy. They’re created for you, to keep you in line, because the line draws out your achievments and guides you to your success. Nobody wants to believe they’re the bad guy, or admit that they’ve been blindly following a shepherd all their lives. But when that realization hits you, that you’ve been lied to, and you look in a mirror to notice how stubborn you’ve been, the fall downward will be far more painful.

From an early age, I’ve been taught to hate. I moved to a new country that I fell more in love with and fell out of love with where I came from. I made great friends that welcomed me, I discovered life and began restructuring my empathy. But they weren’t Christian like me, they weren’t American. They were lesser people in the eyes of my God and the eyes of my flag. It was my lifelong duty to change them. I walked around with my nose in the air, because I had been more blessed than my peers.

I have since renovated my responsibilities. I have lowered myself to become a servant. I try to educate myself on the histories of people. I have had to dismantle the hatred the church tried so hard to mold me into. I have since been welcomed into the homes of diverse cultures. People that smile at me, call me Uncle Tim to their children, whom climb onto my shoulders and gift me their most treasured possessions. I fear for them, for their future encounters with those that are too stubborn to wander off the comforting path of lies.

Fridays were great during my high school era. Not because I smiled when I sat through the Pledge of Allegiance while dozens of brainwashed pawns rolled their eyes at me in disgust; but because I knew that within several hours, I’d be free. I’d daydream about waking up early, to get the most time out of my weekend possible. Skateboarding, hovering over uncracked cement slabs, while the wind wove between my fingertips. It was this freedom that I cherished more than anything else in the world; and as I sat there, in class, staring at a blank sheet of paper—probably a test—my priorities were far away from trimming the educational hedge.

I could never plan for five years ahead of the present. Nobody truly can. While everyone else was trying to get good grades so they could go to great colleges to get careers in fields they’d end up not getting into, I was planning on not going back to school as long as the decision remained mine. My idea of freedom would change throughout the years—from wind weaving between the webs of my fingers on a skateboard to wind weaving through the webs of my fingers at the foot of a redwood tree; or razor-sharp blades of tall grass against my fingertips on some foothill of a mountain range.

But, over time, those sharp blades of grass became sharp edges of paper on pages of books that I’d turn. Trails of dirt between towering spruce became trails of theories that led to personal ideologies. Freedom never became a trajectory I could simply vote for, molding the political influence of society is far from any form of freedom; but an individual philosophical journey I could venture towards right there, in a library in my own head… I broke loose from shackles of political affiliations and religious legalism. I learned to empathize through the stories of others and appreciate those blades of grass the same way that others appreciated them far before me.

I know that I cannot be the only one. When the topic of disaster is argued, it’s a constant human desire to want to be right. We look at political ideologies and opinions and compare them to historic precedent. Dismantling the propaganda that hid information from us, and weighing the experiences of witnesses that lived through it; my arguments tend to align themselves with the whispers of those that have survived. Those who fight to amplify their voices amid the static noise of censorship.

We watch a disaster occur and our guts sink due to our empathy. Millions around us cheer on the destruction, and our first reaction is to feel angry. But, what if they are right, and emotion finally trumps logic? What if this war happens to bring peace along with it? What if billions of dollars are spent without the requirement to be paid back? Historically, this makes no sense. Precedent disproves the argument, but what we ultimately want is peace. Will war finally bring with it that peace? Backed by precedent, we know we are right; but on behalf of the desperation of the people that we love, we should also hope to be proven wrong.

Amid living, 2025 provided trials and examination. I accomplished the destruction of barricades that boxed me in. I watched and I observed others work for over a decade, I absorbed critiques and exhibitions. I never accomplished what I wanted in the eye of others; but where aid became scarce, I went searching on my own. I never finished a ten-year apprenticeship; and the two apprenticeships that I had, I had to learn to forget so that I could push my growth forward. My apprenticeships didn’t teach me much, but rather it was the community I found on social media that gave me a rather ‘unorthodox’ teaching. There have been tailors that had provided instruction, whom quickly disappeared from my DM’s, though they remained in my Story views. There have been tailors that have tried stealing my clients. I silenced the negativity and kept my blinders on, and I dedicated the year to trial and error. A lot of errors occurred throughout the trials but I accomplished the one thing I wanted to get out of this experience. Understanding of make. Maybe I’m a tailor, maybe I’m not. If I am, maybe an awful one; and if I’m not, then the apprenticeship continues. This is an era of curiosity among younger generations, and secrecy among the dying masters. If you’re not willing to provide guidance, your legacy will die with you. Me, I will always remain an open book; I won’t have all the answers, but I will help find them.
What makes me so special? It’s not that I can write, although I think a lot, then write down several words so that I am able to sleep at night. It’s not that I have moved 49 times (not counting the nights I’ve had to sleep in my car). I grew up in an inhospitably hospitable country in Europe, against my will, and later returned against my will. I was forced to relearn English, though all the new friends I met, I spoke Spanish with anyways. I wasn’t special because nonrelatability made me a homosexual, and my first tattoo sold my soul out to the devil. My education was discovered in music, and becoming educated taught me to educate. I tussle with my teachers and my professors, I forced them to change my grades. If I am as intelligent as you say, why am I sitting before an open blank notebook in a Special Ed classroom, retracing mental footsteps to write some poem? Surely, this can’t be what makes me special; though it was here at this desk where I swore to myself to never to salute another flag.

I never lived life, I slept straight through it. I never looked out over the rolling foothills of Yosemite Valley, and I never hitched that ride to escape them. I never met those refugees, with stories more powerful than I could ever tell, that once shook off a staring contest with a rifle, or escaped starvation and war. I never saw a huddled pregnant body on the steps of a mosque, searching within the pit of itself for one last drop of warmth. Am I special because I’m blind? Because everywhere that I look, I truly wish I was. I don’t hear, I don’t feel; I conform. That’s what makes me special, I was born somewhere I am told I belong. But, why don’t I feel like this is my home? Sleeping in cars, shooed out of churches; I built my family, it wasn’t inherited. I built my home, it comes along with me where I go. It makes me feel special that this was something I had to live to discover, but this is the wrong definition of special. But, maybe it’s time you live some too; and redefine what makes a person special.

“It’s okay
Allow yourself a little hate
Hatred is not so bad
When directed at injustice
You can turn the other cheek
Just don’t turn the other way
Enemy of the planet
We finally have a common aim
A reason to forget about our differences And stand as a united front
It’s up to us, we must expose, humiliate American errorists
We’ll start with one
The war has just begun”

The gears of the apparatus are in full force.
The gears of the apparatus hide their faces.
The gears of the apparatus were installed to their jobs.
The gears of the apparatus just follow orders.

How do you approach a uniform that violates human rights?
When it handcuffs children at schools, or throws canisters into crowds?
When it turns rubber bullets on volumes it doesn’t hear, and pulls the trigger on a man on the floor?
Can a pacifist use violence in self-defense against a gear of a machine?

The gears of the apparatus were installed to their job.
The gears of the apparatus just follow orders.
The gears of the apparatus signed away their right to be a human.
The gears of the apparatus sold their souls to the machine.

So rise up and vandalize the gears of the apparatus.
Keep pouring water on them until they rust and lock up.

Whose fault is it when gun fire interrupts a nations march, protesting against violence and begging for peace and liberty? Who’s at fault when revolutionaries are executed for speaking up against the coercion of silence without a trial? Who’s at fault when the biggest terrorist threats are the ones defining terrorism against them? Whose fault is it when you’re poor but your nation is wealthy; and further, whose fault is it when another nation seizes your resources and makes money off it like it’s their own?

If you stand up for human rights, you recognize that fault is in the hands of the politicians, the authorities that have both the power of choice to either coerce and the power to pacify. Standing up for human rights doesn’t mean you get to be selective towards the agony of some but not others. Standing up for human rights also doesn’t mean you get to applaud the human rights violators of other nations.

Standing up for human rights means you love, support and care for people; to provide them with a voice when those in control try endlessly to silence them. Repetitively.

Shame on ANYONE that tries to make you feel guilty for speaking on behalf of the voiceless.

I didn’t know it at the time, but in the winter of 2007, I’d be in the process of disappointing a lot of people. I’d be kicked out of a lot of homes—from some, just for the simple reason of trying to help out people that needed it. From sleeping on couches in living rooms, to sleeping in my car in Wal Mart parking lots overnight. I’d been attending churches my entire life; numerous, I must emphasize, not just one. Educational curriculums, Sunday Schools, Youth Groups, the mission field and many, many peoples’ homes (Sunday afternoon lunches, Thanksgiving Dinners, Christmas evenings). I never had my life together, but I was always respectful and courteous. As all other kids’ began skateboarding, listening to louder and faster music than praise hymns, and began acting up; church consensus would throw the blame at me, rather than the natural caffeinated character of adolescent youth.

I covered my vehicle in band stickers. I covered the hood in letter stickers that made up a quote from a song from a band whose name escapes me: “As of right now, this place is a graveyard.” I sat in a McDonalds that winter afternoon in 2007, when an elderly lady approached me in the comfort of my silent solitude. “Is that your car?” She pointed to the offensive sight of a dark green soccer-mom Plymouth Voyager covered in stickers through the window. “Yes”, I replied. “Are you a Christian?” she asked directly after. “Yes”, I replied. But, I was dumb, I thought I was something I wasn’t. The lady gave me a morality lecture for half an hour, something I was far too used to at the time. Back in 2007, I lied to that elderly lady. I understood then, like I understand now that being a Christian and being Christ-like are two entirely separate things.
I wanted a job that would beat me up. When I said that to the interviewer, he laughed. I ran a business, I’m used to working twelve hour shifts seven days a week. My experience had nothing in common with the opportunity, and due it’s random history, my resume turned out to be the most intriguing candidate. “What was your favourite subject in school, just another random question I ask in my interviews.” “Political Science,” was my reply.

I got what I wanted, my body is in so much pain that my finger tips are numb and my ligaments ache; my body shutters in the cold and sweats profusely once it’s warm. Each knee has five bruises that continuously grow and my wrists have new scars that I’ll bring with me to my grave. I don’t like feeling this way, it hurts to lay down in bed, and it feels worse when I lift myself back up.

But physical pain, I can endure. I wanted a job that beats me up. You laugh because it sounds funny, but eleven-hour days that send shocks of pain up my vertebrae and outward like a subway map of nerves. Within all this pain, I seem to have found a form of happiness: the ceasing of thinking.
