Something we think about a lot as neurodivergent founders (of an inclusive community school)..

As soon as our children are diagnosed, they’re handed a prescription of cookie cutter services, programs, and interventions – all of them promising better outcomes.

Even on social media, Google Ads + Facebook groups, companies recruit families selling improvement… Better communication. Better behavior. Better readiness.

We spent the earlier half of our careers within clinic settings, and saw the routine interventions (ABA, speech, OT) in action. Unfortunately these services were structured moreso to serve the companies + insurance requirements rather than the kids or families. The clinic setting also didn’t consider that our kids are competent, capable and deserving of age appropriate academics over blanket “life skills”, drills and play skills. We saw restrictions and limits placed on our children for the sake of improvement, then sold to families as “treatment”. It never sat right..

The clinic setting also didn’t consider a really big piece… childhood.

When does the day belong to our kids? When do they get to play without conditions? Access their favorite things without needing to complete tasks first? When do we consider what they need as individuals rather than what is “prescribed” for their diagnosis? Why do we impose conditions that we wouldn’t consider for same-aged neurotypical peers?

Since stepping away from the clinical setting, we’ve built a learning community in the Phoenix metro area rooted in those questions. Indie is play-based, unhurried, built around who children already are – not who we’re trying to get them to become. Instead of being led by insurance or societal expectations, our community has shaped our organization.

It’s a hot take… not to say the clinic environment doesn’t serve its purpose BUT blanket prescriptions of traditional services based on diagnosis shouldn’t be the norm that families are pushed into immediately after diagnosis.

It’s time to innovate.
Maybe you’re already there.

You got into this work because you believed in children, wholly. Somewhere along the way – between the compliance models, the behavior charts, the curriculums that leave no room for who a child actually is – that belief started to cost you something.

We built Indie for that moment. For the educator, the provider, the guide who is done shrinking their instincts to fit inside a broken framework.

We’re building a team at our Central Phoenix Early Learning Lab + expanding our DTPHX (Innovation Center) team this summer. SLPs, OTs, teachers, guides, supports. People who are ready to do this work the way it was always supposed to be done.

If you’ve been waiting for the right time to quit the system – this is it. Apply via the “join the team” link in our bio 💫🤍
Two years ago we opened a little schoolhouse in Central Phoenix. It was organic. Unhurried. Cozy. A place where a quiet community blossomed — where children who were just learning to trust the world outside their front door found somewhere soft to land.

Then, something beautiful happened. Those kids grew. They found their footing and they were ready for more. That’s why we built the Innovation Center — because our original Indie kids outgrew the schoolhouse and needed room to stretch.

Building something bigger asked everything of us. As founders, we stretched further than we knew we could in order to ensure that our learners had a space to grow into.

With our (central PHX) lease coming to an end, we made the call to pause “Little Indie”. We moved all learners to the Innovation Center and trusted that if “Little Indie” was meant to return, it would.

It’s coming back.

There are still children who deserve the same unhurried, rooted beginning our first Indie families had and we’re ready to bring this space back for them. This summer we’re returning to our origins. A first cohort. A rebudding. 🌱

Our Central Phoenix location will open again for group enrichment, classes and events this summer. Learners aged 3-8. Half-day and full-day enrollment available. A gentle introduction to daily school routines, fewer transitions, nurtured friendships, play-focused exploration, and a small intimate community where your child can put down roots.

Pre-registration is open now - initial enrollment is limited intentionally.

Many of you recognized this place as “home”

For the second year in a row, Indie picture day was such an amazing experience! 🥹📸

In true indie fashion, we wanted to give our learners a picture day experience where they could take the lead, participate as they pleased + feel relaxed and confident while we captured moments of their play. — an experience little “us” would be proud of.

Shoutout to the indie TEAM for pulling this core memory off for our learners + thank you SO much to our friend Bree for capturing our learners in their element. Your patience, kindness and genuine connection with each of our kids made this experience one to remember. We appreciate you so so much. 🤍

Bonus points for anyone who can guess the Indie team “littles” from their school photos!
We’re just not the one-size fits all, rows of desks type. Ya know?

Indie is a (truly) neuro-affirming learning community serving learners aged 3-12. Our Innovation Center in Downtown Phoenix, AZ is a sensory-rich, hands on learning environment that prioritizes connection, creativity and collaboration amongst peers.

We don’t substitute academic rigor for flexibility — we’ve built an environment that supports both. Our learners are supported within purpose-built studios, with a typical day moving through small group academics, music, STEM, active and passive regulation opportunities + life skills instruction.

We must center a human rights model that not only includes, but empowers our autistic and disabled youth to lead the overhaul of societal barriers… awareness isn’t enough.

Awareness doesn’t change systems in itself. It doesn’t redistribute power. It doesn’t create access. Blue lights and puzzle pieces won’t dismantle ableism. Sorry if you happen to disagree.

Awareness, traditionally has not changed what happens in classrooms, therapy rooms or out in society. It doesn’t change how our children are treated at playgrounds, in grocery stores, doctor’s offices… plenty of people are “aware” of autistic and disabled people — what society lacks is accountability.

A human rights model empowers our children to command space in this world. It means boldly opposing systems that harm our disabled youth; it means increasing safe spaces, designing education that supports competence, honoring autonomy and most of all, empowering our children to topple systems that have been designed for them to fail.

Our kids deserve their seat at the table. This Autism Acceptance month we’re challenging society to make room. ♾️💫
When we started Indie, Jessica and I knew we wanted to hold leadership differently.

In the beginning, that meant taking on everything ourselves and giving everything we had to everyone around us.

Over time, we realized the mission could not live with just the two of us. If Indie was going to grow, we needed to grow a team that could truly root in our why.

That meant showing up every day to walk alongside our team, sharing not just the work but the purpose and the process behind it, shaping the culture together as we went.

As neurodivergent founders, our brains tend to hold the bigger systems all at once. We see the patterns, the possibilities, and the areas things can work better.

We also get overstimulated… quite a bit.

Leadership asks for something very grounded. Our team needs guidance. Families need support. Learners need presence and connection.

Mission-driven leadership lives in that duality.

Holding the long-term vision for the systems you are trying to build while showing up fully for the humans right in front of you…

Because ultimately, the mission cannot live on with just the two of us. It grows when the people around us begin to carry it too.

Over time, we’ve realized something important.

The future that we’re trying to build does not live somewhere far away.

It is built right in the middle of the chaos.
This is where the walls will go.
Because we believe children shouldn’t have to bend to fit the room.
The room should rise to meet the child.

We’ve listened — to parents, to children, to every story that began with “we just want a place where they’ll be understood.”

So we started building.
Not just with wood and steel, but with conviction.
With every story you trusted us to hold.

This is where the walls will go.
Not to enforce quiet, but to hold the noise of childhood in all its beautiful, messy forms.
Walls that stretch wide for pacing feet and flapping hands.
Walls that echo with laughter, stim sounds, music, movement, and calm.

This is where the walls will go.
To frame rooms where difference is expected — not tolerated, but embraced.
Where learning doesn’t have a timeline.
Where communication doesn’t need to be spoken to be heard.

This is where the walls will go.
To create space where children can be curious without consequence.
Messy without shame.
Themselves without fear.

We aren’t just building a center.
We’re building a response.
To every story we’ve heard.
To every unmet need.
This is where THE walls will go.
Not to keep anyone out —
But to say, you’re safe here. Stay.
And as each beam rises, we remember:
Innovation doesn’t always start with an idea.
Sometimes, it starts with the decision to do things differently.

So this — this is where the walls will go.
And soon, the doors will open.
Behind them? Something we’ve all been waiting for:
A place built for them.
Exactly as they are.
