Another small summer study. The summer downtime gives me the chance to do more experimentation with mediums and technique. Because painting is not my strong suit, Iām always trying to push myself in terms of technique and delivery.
I returned to this photographic reference to study a bit more. Itās been a tough study, though. I think itās because Iām not used to working so small. The base of the subjectās composition is a warm foundation of browns and yellows. This is a nice compliment to the cooler designs in the background. Iām adding light blue reflected lights to her left side to add additional chromatic tension in the painting.

Some stories challenge history. Others reclaim it.

Band of Vices is pleased to present
dear artists... Los Angeles - Streets, Structures & Stories, a collaborative exhibition bringing together 100+ artists to explore the layered narratives that shape Los Angeles.
Presented across town in two exhibition spaces, Band of Vices (located in the Historic Downtown Los Angeles Arts District) and the Helms Design Center (on the campus of Culver Cityās Historic Helms Bakery), the exhibition creates a dialogue between art, architecture, design, and community. Together, Helms and Band of Vices invite visitors to consider how creative expression shapes our understanding of place and how the stories we tell become part of a cityās evolving identity.

Two towers in the Art Universe, Rosemary Tracy Woods and Danny Simmons, have passed away within weeks of each other. They meant many things to many people, but to me they were heroes and friends. They pushed me into new dimensions of thought. They cared about me. They were proud of me. I texted and called them when I needed advice. They platformed my work. They scolded me when I wanted to give up on art. And now, theyāre gone.
Itās probably childish to feel the way I do right now. Iām afraid to talk to their loved ones out of fear of saying the wrong things. And Iām overwhelmed by sorrow. And theyāre gone. Iāll have to say more at some point. But this post just acknowledges the genuine feeling of sorrow that Iām carrying because of their loss.
I am grateful for having know them, and for the relationship I shared with these two remarkable and selfless human beings. I will miss Tracy and Danny dearly.
I hope I made them proud. I think I did. My heart hurts.
This is a brilliant video summary of the DASER Talk that took place in celebration of my exhibition Monuments to Our Skies at the National Academy of Sciences. To view the full summary video (3:53 min), visit the link in my bio page on Instagram.
The conversation was dynamic and powerful; it discussed the concepts of wellness, faith, and healing in the Black community from the intersecting viewpoint of the arts and sciences. The NAS has put together this brilliant 4-minute video summary of the DASER Talk and the official opening of my exhibition.
Monuments to Our Skies is on view until July 1st. If you are in the DC area this summer, do stop by to visit.

I could not be happier, more amazed, or more humbled by how all of this has come together.

I am so excited to share with you my portrait of the 19th Century hero Frederick Douglass. The portrait was commissioned by in Worcester, Massachusetts as part of a mighty initiative called the Portraits Project, an effort to bring to light the stories of Black American luminaries of the 19th Century and their connections to the town of Worcester. This portrait, along with two other stunning portraits of Sojourner Truth, painted by, and William and Martha Brown, painted by, is now installed in the historic Mechanics Hall Portrait Gallery. These three new works are the first portraits to be commissioned by Mechanics Hall in over a century, and they are the first representations of Black leaders in the institution.
There are no words to truly encapsulate exactly how Iām feeling at this momentābut I can tell you with certainty that I am fully aware that this moment is greater than myself, Manu, and Brendaā itās greater than Mechanics Hall too. It feels spiritual well beyond measure. I can also tell you that no photography of the three portraits will truly demonstrate how intricate or expressive they are. You will need to visit Mechanics Hall to see them for yourselves.
The unveiling of the portraits was last night, and it was magical. It was MAGIC! There is more information and photography to come. For now, please enjoy this curated selection of images and videos around the creation of the Frederick Douglass portrait.
Please also read the description of the work in the third slide. It offers context for the composition of my painting.
This has been one of the most challenging works Iāve been tasked to create in my life as an artist. I feel so much wiser and matured as an artist and thinker for having had this opportunity.
Thank you Gloria Hall for your vision, and Mechanics Hall for taking me on this remarkable journey.
