This year is for venturing more outside of Central London, it’s terribly shameful on my part that I’ve not done so all that much.

I literally found Atom Coffee randomly on my Google Maps, I didn’t even see any videos from social media actually. I got an iced Gingerbread Matcha Latter and it was sooooo good, I was pleasantly surprised.

Then, can you believe it, I didn’t look too closely at the location I had saved to travel next to, so I ended up in Queen’s Park! Lovely part of town, but I needed to be elsewhere.

I finally got to The Carpenter’s Workshop Gallery at Ladbroke Hall to see Rick Owens & Michele Lamy’s furniture exhibition “Rust Never Sleeps.” I find them fascinating as people, as artists. Maybe I’m intrigued by their subversion to “The Rules.”

Per the artists’ statement: “this is decay reimagined as persistence.” I don’t know, I feel it’s very poignant for our time, like, systems in place we think will last forever now faltering yet we continue on. Endure.

Lightness of Form by Terence Woodgate and John Barnard is on the upper floor as well, I’m intrigued by how thin they were able to make the tables.

Very cool stuff.

Today I celebrate the photos that aren’t “technically correct” but somehow still work.

I consider the “trend” I keep seeing on blurriness, playing with motion blur, painting a city with shutter speed.

I talk about how we’ve gotten so used to such perfect photos on Instagram and elsewhere, and wanting to break free from it. The process, the journey, the messiness… these kinds of photos can still have merit! They don’t need to be discarded.

We try again another day.

“Haven’t you heard? Netherfield Park has let at last”

One of my little day trips I was most surprised by was my visit to Basildon Park. I went on the most gorgeous day with the most gorgeous light, I just couldn’t get enough.

Basildon Park has been used in many UK films over the years, some famous movies and tv shows including The Crown, Downton Abbey, and of course Pride and Prejudice.

If you’re traveling without a car, you can get here from London by taking a GWR train from Paddington to Goring & Streatly (or Pangbourne!) and then walking. Or you can take the Elizabeth line to Reading and order a taxi 🥰✨

Ah, Big Ben 🥰🇬🇧
An anchor point; my North Star

I mentioned in a recent video that London is my longest commitment, my longterm relationship 😹😅

The idea for it came from a podcast I was listening to by and they’re Just Getting Good series, highlighting women’s journeys in their 50s etc.

The writer Glynnis MacNicol explained that the appeal of major cities when you’re not partnered is that the city functions as a placeholder, filling the gaps that perhaps normally a relationship would. There’s always something to do, it never feels lonely (to me).

So when people say things like “you always take the same photos of the same things,” I just have to be like, well yea, this is what I see everyday and I *love* it. I’m glad for it. Even catching a glimpse randomly whilst I’m out puts me in a good mood.

I can’t get enough Big Ben photos. The conditions are always changing, so the more the merrier actually!

I was joking initially but it really is that deep. There’s romance in everything if you look for it.

January in London, out and about in the city, here’s what I got up to-

I always say that London is my boyfriend, it’s the longest commitment I’ve made so far in my adult life. I don’t ever really feel all that lonely because there’s loads to do (in my opinion).

I’m lucky to live pretty central, so started my little outing with a walk to Marylebone. The Monocle Cafe was closed so I just popped over to the high street to pick up some Emryolisse moisturizer at the French Pharmacy

I got a flat white and walked to the National Gallery via Chinatown, which was a good opportunity to practice my photography. I haven’t taken any photos in weeks, at least since November.

I picked up some quick chicken dumplings at Bao Spot in Chinatown. This place always holds me over when I’m about to faint.

Then I went to the National Gallery. It’s been years since I’ve properly seen the place, especially with the new extension.

People watching at 📍Waterloo

Before I moved to the UK, I would always say “when I get there, I’m gonna go to Waterloo and people watch.”

I’m lucky these days to be able to pass through as frequently as I do now, always serving as a reminder of how long this journey has been and how far I’ve come.

There is the National Windrush Monument just off the entry of the station, commemorating the British African-Caribbeans immigrants who came to the UK following WWII to help rebuild and fill labour shortages. The Windrush Generation. My grandparents generation.

It’s fascinating to me this connection- that I feel so strong a pull to this station specifically, and to be reminded of the journey my family took to get here. It gives me chills sometimes!

📍 Burghley House

You cannot miss (literally, it’s impossible to) the Heaven and Hell painted rooms by the Italian artist Antonio Verrio. These rooms are truly impressive and videos don’t do it justice. I could spend hours staring at this work and still find something new to discover.

📚 History:
Built by William Cecil from the mid to late 1500s, Burghley House is a prime example of Elizabethan architecture. Cecil’s aim was to build the grandest house to honour the queen (and also display his vast wealth and power).

The house externally is largely how it was when it was first built, however the interior has changed pretty significantly, with majority work in the 1700s, in the Baroque style. The guides say that the only place William Cecil would recognize is the kitchen!

🚝 How to Get There:
I took the LNER from King’s Cross to Peterborough. From there you can take a connector train to Stamford and simply walk. The walk from the town to the entry of the house honestly could be done in 30 minutes, if you’re not strolling. I suppose you could technically do this as a day trip since London to Peterborough is only 45 minutes.

Tickets for the house are £22 and includes entry for the garden. You can purchase separate entry for the garden, but not separate entry for the house. Doors open at 10:30AM!

I’m a simple gal, I don’t ask for much 🥺🥺

London is the longest I’ve ever settled in one place (in my adult life), but that Paris girl is creep-creepin’ up on me! Send help.

Robin Hood’s Bay, saving the best for last 🥰✨

The Cleveland Way actually extends all the way down to Scarborough, but I think the four iconic ones are most popular probably because you can walk to them all in a weekend.

As I don’t have a car, I actually had to get the bus from Whitby first before I could get to Robin Hood’s Bay. Let me tell you- relying on the bus in the countryside on a Sunday is quite the gamble 😀😅

It is also the endpoint of the Coast to Coast path, which takes you all the way to England’s west coast.

Robin Hood’s Bay is actually considered ancient, having settlement there from before 1000AD. It is a village filled with tales of pirates, and fisherman, smuggling and folklore ✨
