Inspired by the Nepali chautari, traditional resting platforms dating back over 900 years, built beneath trees and used as places for rest, gathering, and conversation for locals and travelers alike, the “Travelling Chautaris” are conceived to be disassembled and transported across different sites, reinterpreting its static nature through a mobile application, while carrying forward its centuries-old function of shared space and dialogue.
In this project, within the broader curatorial framework of T.NUA and its Collaboration Program, art foundation, architect, and artist operate as a collaborative trio alongside T.NUA: Siddhartha Arts Foundation provides cultural grounding to the project through public programming and network facilitation, ABARI contributes advanced research in vernacular architecture, and Sneha Shrestha transforms the inner space through her artistic language of Devanagari script. We look forward to sharing the programming that will unfold across sites in Nepal and beyond in 2026 and 2027.

For her public art installation "About a Living Culture" in Jackson Heights, Queens, Nepalese artist IMAGINE (a.k.a. Sneha Shrestha ) drew inspiration from the lattice windows, or ankhi jhyal, of Kathmandu and the repetition of the Nepali letter “Ka.” Repeated again and again, the form becomes meditative and an invitation to pause, reflect, and connect.
Installed at Diversity Plaza, the sculpture creates a moment of recognition for members of the Himalayan diaspora: a reflection of living culture carried across generations and geographies.
“My work speaks to the living culture of the Himalayan diaspora and the resilience of traditions that live far beyond museum walls. We are living, breathing people who practice this culture every day, and this is what it looks like now. At the heart of my practice is the belief that cultures across the world are not static, but resilient and evolving, with roots in centuries-old traditions that continue to shape how we find community today.” —IMAGINE

So… yes. It’s true I cried in math class! So many times I still remember being made to stand on my chair as punishment because I couldn’t do simple multiplication tables in my head. For a long time, I thought that meant I just “wasn’t good at math.”
Turns out, that wasn’t true.I qualified for honors math in college. I aced the math section of my GRE..etc
What I had to figure out much later is that I’m not great at mental math. There’s just not enough RAM up there 😅 But give me paper, a pencil, and a little time… I can absolutely do the math.
Sharing this for every young person who’s ever been made to feel less-than because their brain works differently…you’re not behind yknow you might just learn differently.

Reflecting on the painting process, Sneha Shrestha writes:
“For the Travelling Chautaris, I was interested in scaling up a painting and understanding what happens when a painting inhabits architecture and maybe… dissolves into being part of the atmosphere.
Under open blue skies in Kathmandu, I found myself painting in conversation with the elements, racing the sunlight as it moved across the day, pausing for birds overhead, listening to birdsong, and surrounded by chitter-chatter around me in Nepali. What a privilege!
Expanding my practice with Devanagari script, I imagined the compositions on a uniquely shaped canvas. I built custom brush extenders, fabricated 16-inch brushes, and worked with extension poles as a way to translate gesture into space. These extensions allowed each mark to move intuitively, with a smooth rhythmic breath, while letting the body draw at an architectural scale.
Inspired by the Nepali chautari, a place of rest, gathering, and exchange, I hope these painted skies invite viewers to pause, look upward, and remember that we are always part of something larger.”

Bamboo, as a natural material, is inherently irregular, varying in diameter, curvature, and straightness. Rather than resisting these imperfections, the system developed by Abari embraces these natural variations. The flexibility built into the joints allows each connection to adjust to the unique characteristics of every pole, enabling the formation of a sophisticated truss system.
The project aims to create structures that can be easily assembled and disassembled, facilitating efficient transport and reuse. To support this, the metal joints are hand-welded and designed as detachable connections, incorporating screws and bolts that allow components to be quickly mounted and dismantled during transport. These joints are fabricated at specific angles to ensure precise alignment within the overall structure.
The bamboo has been carefully processed and heat-treated to enhance its durability and performance. When properly treated, it can achieve a lifespan of over 50 years. With easily replaceable bamboo poles, the structure can potentially last indefinitely if well maintained, ensuring its long-term viability.

In Dwarpalika, I draw upon the architectural vernacular of Kathmandu, where iconic arches and the repeating patterns on ankhi jhyal- the intricately carved lattice windows of traditional homes and temples- are deeply woven into the rhythm of public and spiritual life. I am interested in how material, light, and spatial presence can evoke a sense of refuge and how warmth, shadow, and surface might create an encounter with stillness.
