Nine students traveled across Japan, stepping inside spaces that shape the world’s architectural dialogue—from Meiji Jingu Shrine to the Imperial Palace, and into conversations with leading firms like SANAA and Architects.

How do cities remember the people and stories that shaped them?

For Julian Stanfield (M.LA+U ’26), studying landscape architecture and urbanism means looking beyond the surface—into the history, policies, and lived experiences embedded within every place.

As a student in College of Architecture’s Master of Landscape Architecture + Urbanism program, Julian has explored how landscapes can become deeper sociological expressions—spaces that connect people, history, and identity.

From leading the ASLA student organization to earning the 2025 Caldwell Medal and recognition as a CELA Fountain Scholar, Julian continues to reimagine what equitable cities can become. Next stop: University of Pennsylvania for a master’s in city planning.

Some buildings shape careers. Others shape lives.

For Mark Osorio (B. ARCH. ’84), walking back into S. R. Crown Hall years after graduating felt like coming home. After nearly 40 years practicing architecture at firms including Gensler, he returned in 2018 to serve as director of buildings and operations for the College of Architecture.

For eight years, Osorio helped care for the iconic space designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe while expanding studio space, supporting exhibitions, and ensuring generations of students could create their own memories inside its glass and steel walls.

“It gave me a new appreciation for what it means to be an architect,” he says.

This spring, Osorio retired after leaving a lasting mark on the place that first shaped his path.

Over the course of the academic year, students design projects that contribute toward the College of Architecture's Open House exhibition. This year's projects once again showcase an amazing amount of work, innovation, and creativity from our students.

The end-of-year event takes place in iconic S. R. Crown Hall starting at 5 p.m. May 8, and will feature the final student projects for each degree program, as well as the processes, iterations, and conversations that shaped the students’ work.

The projects, curated from numerous studios and courses, will be on display throughout Crown Hall and along the path outside the south doors.
What feature would you want in your ideal dorm?

Jilliana Pilutti (B. ARCH. M.Eng. STE 4th Year) earned the top student honor from the for her dormitory concept, Botanica Hall. Her design reimagines student housing through biophilic engagement, giving every room access to the outdoors with pod balconies and a shared campus hub at its core.

The project was inspired by her own experience living in residence halls and a belief that student spaces should feel open, productive, and connected to nature.

Outside the studio, Jilliana also designs racing suits for drivers in Indy NXT. After graduation, she hopes to design large-scale environments such as resorts, parks, and racetracks for Formula One.
