Around 400 international water professionals came together in The Hague for an active, hands-on day focused on global water challenges.
IHE Delft showcased the impact of our community. A highlight was a keynote by Neha Mungekar, Researcher in Participatory Environmental Governance and MSc alumna. During the session “Enabling Environment: from policy to practice,” she challenged technocratic norms by emphasizing institutions, human relationships, and meaningful participation — reminding us that real engagement often requires stepping into discomfort.
Among the many Partners for Water initiatives, two IHE Delft projects were also highlighted:
• FlexFLID project — testing financing modalities to support resource-poor smallholder farmers along the Limpopo River in Mozambique and strengthen bottom-up policy development.
Project leader: Annelieke Duker, Senior Lecturer in Irrigation Management and PhD alumna.
• GREENCHEM project — acting as a proof of concept for Fersol©, a Dutch innovation that replaces conventional pre-chlorination to produce more sustainable, lower-cost drinking water with reduced environmental impact.
Project leader: Lap-Cuong Hua, Lecturer in the Department of Water Supply, Sanitation and Environmental Engineering.
The event highlighted how collaborative governance, practical innovation, and inclusive approaches can help secure water resources in a climate-stressed world.

Last week,Emeritus Professor Dano Roelvink held his Valedictory Address at IHE Delft after more than 40 years of working in the field of coastal modelling.
He was praised by friends and colleagues for his out-of-the-box modelling skills which created state-of-the-art algorithms and applications that have advanced and dominated the coastal field ever since. Roelvink was also hailed for his ability to reach across generations and inspire young coastal engineers starting their studies and careers.
"Give the time and space your scientists and engineers need to innovate," he told the audience.
In his speech Living on the edge, Roelvink called for the concept of living shores to be part of the policy to conserve coastlines. By introducing set back lines to prevent construction too close to the shore and nourishing beaches with offshore sand banks, much erosion would be avoided.
"If I've learned anything from my travels along the world's coast, it's to appreciate the value of living shores," said Roelvink.

Bich’s research tackles a vital question for our digital age: How much can we actually trust the eyes in the sky? By pinpointing where satellite data and on the ground reality don't quite match, her work helps scientists and water managers make better assessment of widely used global data products, especially while using those to inform water management in data-scarce regions.
From critically evaluating satellite-based models to collaborating across disciplines, Bich’s story is a powerful reminder for students and young professionals: Science is as much about critical thinking and collaboration as it is about data. 🌍💧

🌍 IMETE is a joint MSc programme offered by IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, University of Chemistry and Technology Prague, and Ghent University. The programme focuses on cutting-edge environmental technology and engineering, covering water and wastewater treatment, desalination, water reuse, and air and soil pollution solutions.
🎓 While full scholarships will not be available, 10 reduced tuition fee scholarships are offered, lowering tuition from €22,500 to €3,000 (excluding VAT).
