They only saw the chair — not her courage, not her dreams.
Today, Pratishtha Deveshwar is rewriting that narrative as the first Indian woman in a wheelchair to study at Oxford University.
At thirteen, a car accident changed her life. She spent four months in hospital and three years confined to bed.
“Going to school was impossible because it wasn’t wheelchair accessible,” she told issuu.
But she refused to give up. With her parents’ support, she studied from home, worked tirelessly, and graduated top of her class.
After school, she told her parents, “I don’t want to live inside the four walls of my home anymore; I deserve better. I applied to LSR and got admission! That changed my life,” as reported by Hindustan Times.
Moving to Delhi alone, against all advice, she learnt to shop, pay bills, travel by metro — and began sharing her story. It sparked a journey into activism that took her to the UN and earned her the Diana Award.
Her next leap: a Master’s in Public Policy at Oxford — to empower millions of Indians with disabilities.
“I wanted to prove that my accident or wheelchair do not define me… I’m not what happened to me, but what I choose to be,” she added.
On this International Youth Day, her story reminds us: it’s courage — not circumstance — that shapes our destiny.

Beyond thrilled to share that I had the surreal experience of sharing my story with the legendary Amitabh Bacchan, Sudha Murthy and Nitin Gadkari earlier this week.
I truly believe that the purpose of my life is to share my journey of survival to instil hope in millions around the world and my faith in the power of my story was reaffirmed when these illustrious people intently listened to me, asked questions about how I transformed my life and commended my resilience. It takes immense patience, hard work and determination to pivot your life from 6 long years of darkness after a debilitating spinal cord injury to the last few years of absolute growth and light that was unimaginable a decade ago.
