My first post for 2023! Saying that 2022 was an amazing year would be an understatement. Not only was it life-changing, but also filled with growth and maturity in my queer journey. After the Drag Race finale, I took it upon myself to place my mental health in the forefront and to do so I had to make some tough decisions before entering 2023.
Unfortunately Iโve always been a people pleaser and this got in the way of me truly living. Iโd say itโs the way I was raised. It was truly hard for me to watch the show back episode after episode because although I was fully being myself, I saw that young Caribbean boy fighting his inner demons; insecurity, shame, timidity, and self doubt.
Iโve had to pull away from some circles, friends, family; all just to really focus on me and understand the way my brain is wired. Daily walks that lasted for hours on end, hiking in my local park and yelling to the top of my lungs, meditation that led to non stop crying and reconnecting with Akeem.
Most people will never understand but to find balance in a busy life is seriously the most important thing one can do for themselves.
Ever since prioritising myself, the veil has been lifted off. My past trauma had me as the punching bag and it was time to face it head on. Anything that scares you, will change you โฆand trust me pain will change you.
I feel an illuminating switch happen in my spirit and finally feel sweet release. Itโs a feeling that I can in the best way describe as growth and purpose! I am ready to take on the world while doing what I love. MY happiness, MY joy, and MY well-being will always come first no matter what. Life will not throw at you what you canโt handle, trust the process ๐ โจ

Natural disasters are a real thing in the Caribbean region: itโs not just paradise, sun, sand and sea.
Growing up back home in St. Maarten I remember as a child being scared to death when experiencing major hurricanes or earthquakes and volcanoes are no exception. The saddest part is that you can never fully predict all the disasters and essentially there is nothing you can do to stop Mother Nature. I cannot even imagine how many peopleโs lives will never be the same again due to this and have to leave everything behind.
When I initially posted this picture I had not even realised that people would look at it and be reminded by the volcano in St. Vincent and was flooded with so many comments of this on Twitter. As a result I decided to dedicate this photo to all those affected by La Soufriรฉre ๐
