Meet the Scintillant Hummingbird — Costa Rica’s smallest bird, and a tiny flash of fire in the cloud forest.
The light was low, the rain was steady, and there was absolutely no room for proper gear. We were crammed under our rain ponchos with our cameras, trying to keep our lenses dry while this little jewel flickered in and out of the flowers.
So, with no tripod possible, we improvised.
Our guide became the tripod.
We braced our cameras against him, edged forward a fraction at a time, took a shot, checked the mist, wiped the lens, breathed, and tried again.
Somehow, against the grey rain and deep wet greens of the mountain, that tiny fiery orange throat lit up perfectly.
It was awkward. It was damp. It was probably hilarious to watch!
And it became one of the highlights of our Costa Rican hummingbird tour with

Hoy, por fin tengo en mis manos lo que terminó convirtiéndose en una de las obras de fotografía de colibríes más extensas jamás creadas.
Hubo momentos donde este proyecto se sintió imposible.
Una pandemia.
Miles de horas detrás de la cámara.
Más de 70 mil kilómetros recorridos a través de Costa Rica.
Lluvia, cansancio, madrugadas eternas, incertidumbre… y una obsesión por crear algo digno de estas criaturas tan increíbles.
Lo que comenzó como fotografía… poco a poco terminó convirtiéndose en el trabajo de mi vida.
Cada página de este libro lleva años de sacrificio, paciencia y momentos que honestamente pensé que nadie iba a llegar a ver.
Y ahora… las primeras copias por fin están en Costa Rica.
Ver este libro convertido en realidad después de tantos años… se siente surreal.
“Messengers of the Gods – Hummingbirds of Costa Rica” es mucho más que un libro para mí.
Es un homenaje a las aves que me cambiaron la vida para siempre.
Y me emociona muchísimo poder compartirlo finalmente con todos ustedes este próximo 31 de mayo a las 11:00 AM, durante el lanzamiento oficial en el auditorio del Volcán Poás.

The Veraguán Mango (Anthracothorax veraguensis) was spotted during our Costa Rica #Hummingbird Tour, and this one was especially exciting because it was a new lifer for me.
This juvenile male was extremely high and far away, so the footage was a real challenge. I filmed him using my Sony A1 II with the Sony 600mm lens, 2x teleconverter, and in-camera crop, giving me an approximate 1800mm full-frame-equivalent field of view.
The Veraguán Mango is one of only two Costa Rica hummingbird species I still needed to photograph. The last one on my Costa Rica list is the Blue-throated Goldentail. It is not the most difficult species, but I still need to be in the right location at the right time.
I also need to return for a few species where I only have juveniles or females photographed, like this one. The journey continues.
