Algae or underwear? Mandy Barker documents the fast fashion waste polluting our seas

‘In 2012, I found a piece of material in a rock pool that changed my life. Mistaking this moving piece of cloth for seaweed, started the recovery of synthetic clothing from around the coastline of Britain for the next ten years.’

The project was inspired by the work of Anna Atkins, a Victorian botanist and photographer whose groundbreaking book, ‘Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, 1843,’ Barker has based her own work on, but rather than showing natural algae and seaweed as Atkins did, Barker chose to show the clothing and garments recovered from the same British shorelines.

The lauded artist Martine Gutierrez opens a survey of her life’s work in Amsterdam —

Gutierrez sees Wunderkind as a salute to her mother, who saved much of Martine’s work from childhood, thereby making the exhibition possible. She sees her successful magazine/artist book Indigenous Woman, centering her Mayan Indian background–images from the series were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in 2024–as a project for her dad, who recently passed away. In fact, it was in part because of his passing that the exhibition came to be, she says. She had always wanted to collaborate with her mother in some way, and you know what they say about time and the present.

V spoke to Gutierrez about childhood dreams, The Little Mermaid, artmaking, and what it means to become a swan after feeling like an ugly duckling.

Is an artist born or made? Is identity something we discover, or something we perform?

In Wunderkind, a major solo exhibition, Martine Gutierrez explores these questions through a powerful celebration of creativity, self-expression, and transformation. Drawing on the imagination and freedom that characterized her childhood, and made her the internationally celebrated artist she has since become.

Martine Gutierrez works across photography, video, music, and performance. Through self-portraiture and cinematic tableaux, she reimagines identity not only as subject matter but also as method. At the 58th Venice Biennale, she captured the art world’s attention with a series of shape-shifting self-portraits in which her body becomes a site of transformation and critique.

‘Identity is a performance,’ —. ‘With a bit of practice you can be almost anything.’
