The year has almost drawn to a close, and what a year it’s been for books! I’ve asked all our booksellers here at Housmans what their favourite books of 2025 were, and here is a beautiful stack of everyone’s answers.

🐈 Catherine chose ’s beautiful, elegant memoir The Quiet Ear and ’s short story collection Night of the Living Rez, which she lauds for its ‘melancholy magic’.

🐢 Nik chose ’s Slow Down, which is rapidly becoming a key text for the field of degrowth, as well as Lois Shearing’s anti fascist feminist study Pink-pilled and David Camfield’s Red Flags, a constructively-critical look at ‘actually existing socialism’

🖋️ Al chose ’s stylistically bold and beautifully human novel Nova Scotia House and a reissue of Fanny Howe’s Holy Smoke, who sadly passed this year and who he calls one of the most important writers of our age

🎧 Zosia chose ’s intimate memoir Mother Mary Comes to Me, a tender exploration of family and memory, and the reissue of The Will to Change by bell hooks, which she says is ideal for folks of all genders looking to reflect.

🌿 Kate (that’s me, hi!) chose Authority by, a collection of our generations greatest critic’s witty, intelligent, and incising essays and reviews, and The Feminist Art of Walking by, a fun and heartfelt piece of psychogeography meets art writing meets feminist memoir-ish.

Were any of these your faves of 2025? What great books did we miss? Let us know in the comments so we can pick them up for Christmas break reading.

And as always, all of these books are available for sale on our website or in store! Tomorrow is your last day to order for shipping by Christmas so get in while you can. Happy holidays! 🎄🎄

A moving launch for 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘑𝘢𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 last night. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts to for holding the conversation with such love and tenderness, to for hosting us, and to everyone who came and listened to the stories of the women of the Bangladesh Liberation War.

As explained so clearly, sexual violence is always political — a weapon to destroy an individual and her community. Military rape is not a unique event but a deliberate and systematic strategy that is wielded today against women and men in Palestine, Sudan and Congo.

Saima’s new novel refuses to relegate the victims of this violence to a historical footnote. She relates the women’s experiences with empathy and complexity — their dreams and their desires, their pain and the choices they make to survive.
🕊️ The 73rd Housmans Peace Diary is here!

This year’s Diary is a tribute to, and an inspiration for, campaigners for peace and social justice around the world.

📅 With week-to-view pages, inspiring quotes, and dates for celebration and protest, it’s as practical as it is thought-provoking.

ForcesWatch is proud to share that our own Emma Sangster has written this year’s introductory article, “Resisting the war machine: reflections on militarism, conscientious objection, and building peace”, which explores the current state of militarism and the grassroots movements challenging it in the UK and beyond.

Now on sale from our friends at Housmans Bookshop, a longstanding radical bookshop and hub for peace and social justice activism based in the same building as ForcesWatch.
