Born in Vienna, Austria, Friedrich and Otto Paneth were the sons of Dr. Joseph Paneth (a close friend of fellow Hot Victorian Sigmund Freud) and Sophie (or Sofie) Schwab.
In this image, Friedrich (the gentleman standing at far right behind the camera) is photographing his younger brother Otto (seated second from left) and their friend Lutz. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any additional information about this handsome moustached gent.
Friedrich (1887–1958), a chemist, was the older brother of Otto (1889–1975), who later became a physician. They were two of four children born to the Paneth family in Vienna.
Semmering, located in Lower Austria, became a fashionable tourist retreat after the completion of the Semmering Railway in 1854. Perhaps these three friends were enjoying a little sojourn away from the city.
The Autochrome Lumière process was the first commercially successful method of colour photography. Patented in 1903 by brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière and released commercially in 1907, it used dyed potato starch grains to create luminous, painterly images.

George Llewelyn Davis ) was the eldest of five Llewelyn Davis boys said to have inspired the character of Peter Pan, created by author J.M. Barrie.
After the death of the boys’ parents (father Arthur in 1907, and mother Sylvia in 1910) Barrie became the boys’ guardian. Barrie took many mannerisms, pursuits, and personality traits from George and his brothers (John ‘Jack’, Peter, Michael, Nicholas ‘Nico’) to form Peter. One rather prophetic example is when George, on hearing of Barrie’s tales of babies who’ve died going on to Neverland, said, “To die will be an awfully big adventure”, becoming one of Peter Pan’s most famous quotes. Barrie financially supported the Llewelyn Davis lads, and George attended Eton College, where he was a passionate cricketer. He later went on to Trinity College, Cambridge.
Sadly, and like millions of men of his generation, George was killed in action in 1915 in WWI while serving his regiment in Flanders. His final resting place is in Voormezele, near Ypres, Belgium.

Presenting handsome Canadian portraitist and etcher Ernest George Fosbery (1874–1960), captured here in a marvelous 1904 portrait by William McGregor Paxton ).
Ernest’s artistic journey took him from his Natalie Canada (studying under Franklin Brownell) to Paris to train under Fernand Cormon. He later became a prominent educator at the Art Students League in Buffalo, New York, and went on to the Art Association of Ottawa. As an artist, Ernest was celebrated for his technically masterful and highly realistic portraits.
When WWI broke out, Fosbery traded his brushes for a uniform, serving first as a soldier before being appointed an official Canadian War Artist.

A quiet moment captured in time. Elegant tailoring, a shared silence, and the soft light of an Edwardian afternoon…
This charming image caught my eye many years ago when it was used for the cover art by Penguin Books for their 2005 edition of E.M. Forster’s classic gay novel, ‘Maurice’.
I’ve been unable to find any information on this photograph beyond its use for the book, but if any of my lovely followers have any clues, please do let me know.
I adore how calm and quiet the photograph is. It captures a private and intimate moment of repose between two men, the nature of their relationship unknown, but certainly close. Just beautiful. I’m personally fond of the chap on the left. He’s got a magnificent profile and calves to die for.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted for #manmeatmonday so when I came across this filet mignon of a man, I knew it was time. A tender lean cut of premium French beef.
Monsieur Berger was a French athlete with an insanely toned body, skin stretched as tight as a drum’s over his muscles, and all the moustache you could ask for.
N.B. Now, this fine man has been doing the rounds online over the last few years. He’s often been identified as Eugène Bergè (sometimes written as Bergès), but I think there has been some confusion with Eugène Bergès, a French fencer who competed in the 1900 Summer Olympics. During my research, I couldn’t find any contemporary sources naming this man Eugène. In the original source of the images from BnF, produced in 1914 by l’Agence Rol he is stated only as “Berger”. But whatever his name was, he was a magnificent man, and no mistake.
The following images are from the “Concours de l’athlète complet” (Eng.: Complete Athlete Competition), held at Vincennes (Val-de-Marne), France, on 12th of July, 1914.

By George, no! It’s the fine chaps of the Dartmouth College baseball team, circa 1880. 🧢⚾🎓
Quite possibly one of the most striking team photographs I’ve come across.
Only could a 19th-century team straddle louche and limber so expertly. Athletic, sporting, but oh so elegant and refined. The gentleman sitting front, and centre confidently grips his bat, using it as a stand to prop up the exhausting weight of his utter and unabashed fabulosity.
Dartmouth’s first baseball team was formed in 1865, and it would garner notoriety for its “varied, creative, and bold” uniforms. Who doesn’t love a jaunty hat and a stripey stocking for sporting pursuits?

Born in Naples to Eduardo Matania (who himself was an accomplished artist), Fortunino was something of an artistic child prodigy, starting out designing soap advertisements when he was 9 and even exhibiting his first works at the Academy of Naples at 11.
By 20, he was living in Paris and working for “Ilustration Francaise”, and in 1902 he covered the Coronation of Edward VII on behalf of “The Graphic”. In 1904, Fortunino joined the staff of “The Sphere” which featured some of his most notable illustrations, including the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912.
During the Great War (WWI), Fortunino acted as an Official War Artist at the Western Front. His artistic capability and prestige led Cecil B. DeMille to commission him to create set designs for the 1952 film “The Ten Commandments” starring Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner.
Fortunino worked consistently though his life and passed away at his London home in 1963, aged 81.

Ladies, gentlemen, and otherly gendered individuals of the #hotvictorians jury, I call to your attention Mr. Francis “Frank” Curran”.
He may have been something of a bad lad, but when your mugshot looks as hot as this, who cares? Those come-to-bed eyes 👀, and those beautiful bow-shaped lips 👄. Oh my!
Born in Ireland and later emigrating to the US (sometime around ), Curran lived in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City, and worked as a gasfitter. At a little over 5 ft 8 in (1.72 m) tall, he didn’t have great stature, but with his black hair and grey eyes, he was a handsome chap.
Work as a gasfitter clearly didn’t pay much, as Curran was arrested on the 9th of April, 1894. His crime? Trying to supplement his earnings with burglary.
On his arrest card, he is noted as having quite a few intriguing tattoos –an anchor with a star in the centre, the letters F.C. on the inside of his right forearm, and a crucifix on the inside of his left arm.
This mugshot is in the form of a Bertillon card.
In the 1890s, the NYPD used arrest records such as Bertillon cards and other photo/description dossiers, to identify suspects and repeat offenders. These cards, compiled between 1878 and 1896 were crucial for a system that evolved from less precise methods and laid the groundwork for modern criminal identification.
I went to the location of the address he gave at the time of the arrest (slide 3). The building is still there and still in use.

This beautiful man is Arthur Leslie Shidler. Born in 1860, in Lakeville, St. Joseph County, Indiana. He grew up on a farm before moving to Chicago to study to become a doctor. After graduating, he practiced medicine in Ellisville, Illinois, specialising in problems of the ear, nose, and throat.
He sadly passed away very young on the 1st of August, 1899. He was 38-39 years old.
