Both in their 50s, these guys are true outliers who continue to give athletes half their age serious problems on the mats. I’ve known both since they were white belts — I’ve taught them, trained with them, rolled with them, and even competed alongside them over many years and decades. I’ve probably spent more time on the mats with these two than almost anyone else, which gives me a pretty solid perspective on their skills, toughness, and character.
Doug Fink — I’ve known Doug for 37 years and he’s a true OG in the martial arts community. His background started in Sport Karate before evolving into Muay Thai, MMA, and eventually becoming an incredibly skilled nogi grappler. Doug’s creativity shows both on and off the mats. Somehow he still manages to be one of the best tattoo artists around as owner of Bushido Tattoo while also ripping around on his bike and juggling countless other hobbies. Doug and I were training jits long before it was cool and before there were even clubs around — so being able to award this long overdue rank to one of the toughest and raddest dudes I know is a real full-circle moment.
Joel Yana — despite qualifying for a Denny’s discount, Joel is a savage grappler who has competed at 5 straight World Masters tournaments and has yet to be submitted at purple or brown belt. His analytical approach makes him a great competitor, but also an exceptional instructor and leader for his teammates. Outside the gym, Joel balances a demanding career, snowboarding in winter, skateboarding in summer, and most importantly, prioritizing his family. Being a black belt in BJJ is one thing — being a black belt in life is another. Proud to say Joel is finally both.
I feel incredibly blessed knowing we now share the same lineage in this sport. Huge thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate and support these two — every training partner and teammate played a role in their journey!
