Professor Barb Block takes Oceans 110/210, Shark Biology, Ecology and Conservation to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, bringing the students to a live class.
Kayla Kauffman spent the past month sampling rice-fields for snails and introducing fish to rice fields in the Senegal River Basin. Integrated rice-fish farming is a win-win solution to increase rice and fish growth, diversity farmer incomes, lower agrochemical inputs and combat infectious disease among rice farmers. This Stanford Accelerator project is scaling up rice-fish farming in the region, while measuring the impacts integration has on rice growth, fish growth, farmer incomes, and schistosomiasis carrying Bulinus and Biomphalaria snails. The Senegal River Basin is hyper endemic to schistosomiasis and rice farmers have a particularly high disease burden, which many perpetuate disease-poverty cycles.

Last Thursday, July 24th, Hopkins welcomed the Stanford Young Investigators program to Hopkins Marine Station!

These incredible high school students, passionate about sustainability and science, are spending their summer exploring real-world research through Stanford’s K–12 outreach program. During their visit, they:

🐋 Got an inside look at the Goldbogen Lab, where cutting-edge research is taking place

🏛️ Stepped inside the historic Agassiz Building, home to some of Hopkins’ oldest collections and classrooms

🤿 Explored the Dive Locker, where our scientific divers gear up to study Monterey Bay up close!

It was a joy to see these future changemakers ask thoughtful questions, engage with our researchers, and experience life as a marine scientist for the day. We hope to see you back at Hopkins again soon! 🐬🌱

On Friday July 18th, Hopkins hosted students from two Stanford undergrad research programs:
• Mentoring Undergraduates in Interdisciplinary Research (MUIR)
• Summer Undergraduate Program on Energy Research (SUPER)

The day kicked off at Monterey Bay Kayaks, where Jenny Grossman, Gabe Calistro, and HI-SURF intern Robert Liu led the group through the Monterey Bay. Back on shore, students toured Hopkins, explored the historic Miller Library, met researchers in the Micheli Lab, and got a behind-the-scenes look at our diving and boating programs.

As Audrey Yau (Director, Stanford Energy Postdoctoral Fellowship and Stanford Sustainability Accelerator Fellowship) put it: “Of all the visits and tours our programs have had at Hopkins, this one was by far the most interesting and engaging. We are grateful to everyone who took time to connect with our group.” We hope to see you guys again next summer! 🚣‍♀️
