Hey divas, this is your friendly Studio Manager and Loom Technician, Tali, taking over the LMRM Instagram to introduce our killer dream team.

First up is the one and only, our founder, co-director and fearless leader: ๐Ÿ˜HOPE ๐Ÿ˜. A visionary fueled by spite, she worked her butt off to fill a void in the modern weaving world. As just a young babe, she created this ambitious maker space, defying expectations and refusing to compromise her values and morals while doing so. Donโ€™t be distracted by her style and beauty, she is a freakishly brilliant business person while simultaneously balancing a successful arts career.

โœท By far the biggest hater on the entire LMRM team.
โœท Somehow managed to staff her business with all her nosiest fans.
โœท Fueled by Chinese soap operas and no sleep due to her rascal cat, Tofu
โœท Works approximately 1 billion hours a week
โœท Makes very cute noises like a cartoon character
โœท Cult leader-esque
โœท You are probably pronouncing her last name wrong
โœท Tofu and Lu and Junโ€™s cat, Ace, are in a gay relationship

๐Ÿ“ธby!
SPOTLIGHT ON: Hope Wang

Hope Wang is an artist and creative entrepreneur based in Chicago, IL. Her practice explores memory, loss, and longing in the ever-shifting architectural landscape. Through handweaving, photography, poetry, and printmaking, she develops what she calls (American) Midwest Melancholy as a visual language. In her work, she dwells on what is often already disappearing: the last seconds of the sun setting against a factory wall, the shadow of a locked gate cast by streetlights, or the wavering space between an open storefront and a vacant one.

Hope is also the founder and co-director of. โ€œloom roomโ€ is a project space fostering opportunities for art-making, research, and community programming around digital weaving. She is invested in equitable conditions for working artists, resource sharing, and moving at the speed of trust. She is a two-time recipient of an Artists Run Chicago Grant (2024 & 2025) from the Hyde Park Art Center for LMRMโ€™s contributions to the cityโ€™s art community. Her artwork has been exhibited throughout the US, which includes The Hole, NYC; the Glass Curtain Gallery at Columbia College Chicago, IL; The Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum in Milwaukee, WI; amongst others.

Follow along with and on Instagram and see her works tomorrow, Saturday, May 23 at Entry Point. RSVP link in our bio.

Bring your grand visions and half-baked ideas. Bring your courage. Letโ€™s make weavings!

This beginner-friendly course is designed for those interested in translating a specific project into a piece woven at the TC2 loom. Led by LMRM founder and co-director Hope Wang, we will utilize the studio resources (one 2W TC2 Loom, textile art books, weaving sample library, shared warp) to produce sample blankets, test files, and a final mock-up file for a textile project.
Attendees will explore yarn materials, digital tools, and weaving equipment available at LMRM to refine their technical and conceptual design process. This is designed for someone who is looking for technical support but has a defined conceptual and/or visual focus.

No experience required, but handweaving and Photoshop experience helpful!

Grant Lab!
Thursday, March 12, 6-8pm
Free w/ RSVP, in person or virtual

No one is naturally good at writing grants. It is a learned skill.

As an artist-run space, LMRM is deeply familiar with how grant funding can impact your ability to utilize resources in our studio for ongoing projects. So on March 12, weโ€™re partnering with Bustling Spaces to bring you Grant Lab!, a free hands-on workshop focused on building clear budget narratives for real applications.

Grant Lab! will be tailored to how LMRM can provide these items to help you create specificity in your grant applications:

โœง project narrative strategies

โœง ways to assess alignment

โœง letters of support

โœง pricing quotes

โœง upcoming program information

Not required for attendance, but we encourage you to bring ideas in progress or upcoming applications youโ€™re preparing!

Attend in person or join us virtually via livestream. Weโ€™ll record the workshop and leave it up for 30 days after the event. Registration is mandatory to receive the recording. In-person capacity will be limited to 20 attendees.

Last year I wanted to shoot a glam team portrait session at LMRM to celebrate all the mountains everyone moved to make this space happen. From the studio relocation to expanding our loom access, this was dream work.

We have worked really hard on every little detail of LMRM and I am incredibly grateful to have a community so invested in what felt like a pipe dream 5 years ago. In our first team photoshoot, I didn't want to be humble about this work - it's often taken 200% of everyone's efforts to make this happen, and I never want to forget that. Chicago artists are familiar with these kinds of spaces being built as your second or third job, designing impactful programs with a much smaller budget than you could imagine. Everyone who has lent their encouragement, time, curiosity, advice, and labor has sharpened what LMRM can do and represent.

Thus, "Glam & Unrelatable" was the assignment for the vibe and needless to say, crushed it!

Organization doesn't kill creativity.

During this workshop, we will explore different examples for project tracking, budget building, and creating maps of the pre-existing resources at our fingertips. It's easy to fixate on what we donโ€™t have and how thatโ€™s keeping us from our goals, instead of seeing the merit of what resources are already available to us. By meticulously documenting and making visible the invisible costs that sustain artist practices, can we consider the budget spreadsheet or the planning document as a love letter to our ideas?

I'll be sharing systems that work for me or my peers, and how that logic can be tailored to your own process. I will also be bringing some favorite books of mine for data visualization and diagram ideas for in-person browsing:)

See you then!
The thing about our digital loom is that itโ€™s kind of like the gateway drug to weaving.

Complex weaving has been around for thousands of years. I barely know anything about weaving. But as an artist, I know that this tool reignites peopleโ€™s curiosity and motivation to hand-weave in ways that other looms have not. This is a special thing, to bring people back in front of the loom and reacquaint ourselves with the skills and knowledge that human ingenuity brought forth thousands of years ago. It is a special thing for this tool to get people to fall back in love with making cloth by hand, and it is a special thing for us to witness people follow that thread of curiosity and fully immerse themselves in this at LMRM.

It is important for you to know that weaving cannot be simplified. It can be made more efficient, but it cannot be simplified. It can be made more efficient, at a cost of other things. Working on this particular loom means that you are signing up for something a little less efficient than you think, and more labor intensive than you think. You are signing up to work in front of the loom and weave, by hand, line by line. You are signing up for the power to stop the loom and make new decisions at any moment. That power is electrifying as it is exhausting at times. You are signing up for repetitive actions until you learn through muscle memory at what angle must you flick your wrist with what amount of strength to send a shuttle flying from one end of an open shed to the other. Your focus isnโ€™t yards and yards of material made in a fever dream frenzy that leaves your body aching for days, if not months.*

Your focus is spending enough timeโ€”forgiving, pleasurable timeโ€”with the material and the tools and your body to intimately listen and let to the process teach you something. It is learning to collaborate with all these parts and considering yourself as one of the many variables guiding the direction and energy of the work, rather than the one bending all other parts to your will.
I am frequently asked, "How long did it take you to make this?" as if labour is the only thing that creates value in the work. For me, I think making things is very much about conviction: you have to believe in something enough to see it through.

When does the clock start? I've changed my answer to this over many conversations. Much of my creative process begins with quick phone camera photography. It is a quotidian practice of looking. My process also often involves writing poetry, or crying frequently in my car. But does it only start when I'm physically at the loom, throwing a shuttle back and forth to form the first line of cloth? Does it start with the first or third or fifth try before you get it right? Does it start when I'm photographing my subjects years in advance, over and over again until it gains critical mass? Does it begin when my heart breaks again?

And when it's materialized, is it still the same thing as when it first began? When you say something aloud, does it remain the thing that it was inside your mouth?

I donโ€™t know when I started paying attention to the peripheral details of my surroundings. I have always loved story-telling, and for me, the smell of a memory, the taste of an emotion, and the sounds of time passing were structural to how I recalled those stories.

Change in physical spaces is an inevitable promise - even though my memories are archived with these unwavering sensory details, spaces as physical artifacts will continue to live many accumulated lives before and beyond the moment I converge with it.

I often reference this transmutation in my work by recalling a particular moment many years ago. I met someone for the first time in an unremarkable diner, and they lived a few blocks east of it. I never recorded their address, always mapping their apartment from the diner - I could not tell you the street name or the number of blocks away or the look of the building, even though I usually file away this kind of information effortlessly. It was a time in my life where I didnโ€™t feel entirely tethered to my body, and every walk to their apartment was a path that only my feet knew.

Many months after my brief interactions with this person evaporated, I almost walked past the diner without registering it. Water-stained brown paper was taped up against all the windows, a โ€œfor-rentโ€ sign indicating its fate. My reflection in the glass, that was now rendered opaque by the paper, shifted like a lingering ghost.

This person never played a momentous role in my life. But it was the physical erasure of an artifact and the unsettling glitch I felt standing in front of the glass, that seared keenly into the fabric of my memory. That sense of loss, the inevitable life of a new business that would write over this space, serves as a locator beacon for a time I floated behind myself. And I suppose, I continue to record the palimpsests around me as a symptom of living many lives as well.
