Honors Action is your chance to move in early, meet your people and make a real impact across the Tuscaloosa community. Spend your last week of summer rolling up your sleeves alongside fellow freshmen, working on hands-on service projects at local schools—think painting, building outdoor spaces and bringing new life to classrooms.

From Sunday, Aug. 9 to Friday, Aug. 14, you’ll be part of something bigger than yourself. Each day includes service work, plus time to connect through group dinners, discussions and evening activities. Each year, students in the Achieve Scholars Program present their research at the premier, undergraduate research event at UA. URCA 2026 (Undergraduate Research and Creativity Activity Conference) had over 600 students from across campus present research this year in 11 different categories.

This year, all three of the top scorers in the Interdisciplinary Studies session were Achieve Scholars, making for a clean sweep!

Olivia Moore, a senior from Huntsville, Ala., is majoring in economics with minors in history and mathematics at The University of Alabama.

Moore has been involved in Honors Action, Engage Tuscaloosa, Honors Year One and the University Honors Program as an intern. She has also served as a Global Tides mentor and resident advisor, fostering community and supporting her peers. She will continue her studies at The University of Alabama next year, pursuing a Master of Arts in quantitative economics.

Senior Soundbites Spotlight: John “Jack” Armstrong

John “Jack” Armstrong is completing his bachelor’s degree in English with minors in creative writing and history at The University of Alabama.

Armstrong is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa and served as prose liaison for Red Rook Press, where he was awarded the 2025 Judy Bonner Presidential Medallion. Within the Honors College, he participated in Honors Action for three years and served as secretary of the Honors College Assembly. In the Department of English, he also serves as secretary of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society.

Following graduation, Armstrong will begin work toward a master’s degree in American studies at The University of Alabama.
