On Thursday, April 9, Honors students visited the School of Social Work housed in the historic mill site on the North Oconee River, learning about the school's mission over free burritos. Dean Philip Hong introduced students to the school's focus of policy, advocacy, community-based organizations, and human-centered practice in promoting change.

Then, students were led on a guided tour by Dr. Jane McPherson (pictured), an associate professor of social work and director of the Complex Cloth project, to see pieces of the brand-new, award-winning installation detailing the history of the former cotton mill.

Congratulations to UGA juniors Vaughn Frost and Annie Mehta for being among 454 undergraduates across the country selected as this spring’s Barry Goldwater Scholars. The scholarship is the highest undergraduate award of its type for the fields of mathematics, engineering, and natural sciences and provides funding for students studying within these fields.

Vaughn is a Foundation Fellow, Stamps Scholar, and Honors mechanical engineering major, and Annie is a physics and astronomy major. They both started conducting research with their current labs in the spring of their freshman years, and both have worked with the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, housed within the Honors College.

Vaughn’s primary research involves looking at the impeller blades in a rocket engine and how they vibrate as they increase the flow and pressure of a fluid. He’s searching for ways to avoid catastrophic failure, also known as resonance, in rocket engines to help make launches safer and to bring down construction costs.

Annie is working on a project to classify protoplanetary disks, which are the birthplaces of solar systems. Using high-performance computing to work with a high volume of observational datasets, she hopes to generate new information about key planetary formation conditions.

In the future, Vaughn plans to pursue a doctorate in mechanical engineering, specializing in acoustics, vibrations, and fluid-structure interactions. Annie plans to earn her doctorate in computational astrophysics.

Connor Fenneran traveled to Italy with the Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s study abroad program to learn from and perform alongside Italian musicians throughout the country. Participating in daily lessons to improve his craft as a trombonist, Connor was able to establish connections with Italian professionals and see incredible musical performances, including orchestra concerts, open air choral shows, and even a chamber concert in a cathedral.

“It is imperative that I diversify the input I receive about my playing and engross myself in all sorts of different styles and sounds of music,” Connor said. “This experience would not have been possible for me without the Honors International Scholarship Program, and I am forever grateful to have been provided with this opportunity and experience.”

Gracyn Manley studied abroad in Valencia, Spain, last summer! For her first time outside of the country, every interaction became an opportunity for her to practice her language skills and develop confidence navigating a new environment. Gracyn took Spanish courses that challenged her to apply her knowledge of the language in real-world contexts and was immersed in local culture through touring landmarks, attending flamenco performances, and learning how to make paella from local chefs.

“My summer in Spain was far more than an academic requirement or travel experience — it was a deeply formative chapter of my life that brought together years of language study, academic preparation, and personal ambition,” Gracyn said. “It confirmed my passion for international studies, solidified my professional goals, and gave me the confidence and tools to pursue them. I am incredibly grateful for the scholarship that made this life-changing experience possible.”
