But what many people don’t realize is that some of the most timeless homes actually begin with restraint.
Before we could layer this house back up with warmth, texture, pattern, architectural detail, collected furnishings, and personality…we first had to uncover what made the home special in the first place.
Heavy drapery, dated carpet, ornate finishes, and overly busy materials were competing with the architecture instead of supporting it.
So we simplified.
Not because the end goal was minimal.
Because the architecture deserved room to breathe.
Now that construction is wrapping up and furnishings, wallpaper, custom details, and softer layered moments are being installed, you can finally start to feel where this project was always headed.
And honestly? This is why judging a renovation mid-construction almost never tells the full story.
The best homes are usually built in layers over time. The quiet architectural foundation matters just as much as the personality-filled details that come later.
Save this for anyone renovating a character home right now because the “trust the process” phase can feel VERY uncomfortable before everything finally clicks into place.
It’s been a while since we shared a true before + after renovation, and this one from our Indigo Ct. Project felt worth the wait.
What was once a dark, disconnected kitchen is now layered with warmth, texture, and intentional gathering spaces designed for real life. The built-in island banquette completely changed how this home functions. Instead of a standard island with barstools, we created a space that feels custom, conversational, and elevated…while still being incredibly practical for everyday family life.
One of my favorite details? The custom dining table. It gives the kitchen an elevated feel that instantly softens the space and makes it feel less like a showroom kitchen and more like a home people actually want to linger in.
Design details that transformed this space:
• Built-in island banquette seating
• Custom dining table
• Warm wood tones mixed with soft painted cabinetry
• Layered lighting for a more intimate feel
• Backsplash tile that can chew the light just so for a more elevated look
• Hidden storage solutions to reduce visual clutter
This is your reminder that some of the best renovations aren’t about making a home bigger…they’re about making it work better.
SAVE this for your future kitchen renovation inspiration ✨
And tell me below…would you choose a built-in banquette over traditional island seating?

The heavy carpeting.
The layered drapery.
The dated wallpapers.
The darker finishes that had accumulated over decades.
And honestly? I understand why people were nervous. Mid-renovation is rarely the moment a home looks its best.
But restoring a home like this was never about stripping away its character to make it feel cold or modern. It was about editing thoughtfully and creating balance. Keeping the architecture and permanent finishes quieter allowed us to layer richness, texture, warmth, and personality back into the home in a much more intentional way.
Now those layers are finally arriving.
Custom shower enclosures that feel tailored to the architecture. Wallpaper selections that feel timeless instead of trendy. Softer textures, richer materials, depth, reflection, and contrast that completely change how these spaces feel in person.
The best homes aren’t created by adding more and more. They come from knowing what deserves to stay, what deserves to go, and what needs room to shine.
The was never losing its soul.
You were just seeing it before the final layers arrived.
Excited for our next build coming to 85254 🏗️🏡

And to be fair…most of the time, that advice is right.
Matching pieces can flatten a room. Everything starts feeling too expected, too showroom-like, too one-note. But every once in a while, a pair comes along that belongs together so completely that separating them would actually make the room worse.
That’s exactly what happened here.
This antique French Louis XV Revival bed and matching armoire bring a level of craftsmanship, scale, and history into the space that new furniture simply couldn’t replicate. Believed to date back nearly 200 years, these pieces anchor the room and create a sense of permanence that makes the entire suite feel collected instead of decorated.
Once we committed to keeping these pieces, every other design decision became about balance. The architecture needed to stay quiet and understated so the bed and armoire could really shine. Cleaner lines, restrained detailing, and softer finishes created space for these antiques to become the focal point instead of competing for attention.
Now comes my favorite layer…bringing warmth and softness back into the room through custom bedding, drapery, textiles, a richly colored rug, and lighter pedestal nightstands that juxtapose beautifully against the heaviness and ornate nature of the bed.
That balance is what keeps the room from feeling heavy or overly traditional. The antique pieces bring soul. The newer layers keep it feeling fresh and livable.
Sometimes good design is knowing the rules.
Great design is knowing when to break them.
Save this for the reminder that the most memorable rooms rarely come from playing it safe.
And honestly? I understand why people feel that way right now.
Before the renovation, this home was layered with wallpaper, heavy drapery, decorative finishes, patterned carpet, accessories, color, texture… decades of thoughtful decisions made by homeowners who genuinely loved their home and invested deeply into it over time.
But as we started redesigning the space, we realized something important:
The architecture itself was getting lost.
The ceiling details. The natural light. The scale of the rooms. The material transitions. The views.
There was so much visual competition happening that the home never had a chance to breathe.
So before we begin layering personality back in, we intentionally paired the home down to its architectural foundation. Simpler materials. Cleaner lines. More restraint. More quiet.
Not because we wanted the home to feel cold or modern white… but because contrast matters.
A beautifully layered home needs moments for your eye to rest.Texture needs restraint beside it to feel intentional.Pattern becomes more powerful when it isn’t competing with ten other things.
And we’re not done yet.
The softness, warmth, color, textiles, wallpaper, rugs, drapery, antiques, and collected details are still coming. But this time, they’ll support the architecture instead of overpowering it.
That balance is where homes begin to feel timeless.
Honored to share that HSD won Best Renovation / Restoration in Arizona for our Caballo Project in Paradise Valley, a luxury home renovation we won’t soon forget.

A heartfelt thank you to and for hosting such a beautiful evening and for selecting our project as a winner among 2,300 submissions. Truly an honor.
Still taking this one in.

Long nights. Second-guessing. Learning the hard way. Building something from scratch while raising four kids and figuring it out as I went.
Today, HSD was named to LUXE NEXT | Class of 2026 — one of 120 designers and creatives across the country recognized for shaping what’s ahead in our industry.
It’s surreal.
It’s humbling.
It feels deeply personal.
Because I remember what it felt like at the beginning.
Small.
Unknown.
Hoping someone would say yes.
Every project. Every risk. Every stretch beyond what felt comfortable led here.
Thank you to the clients who trust us with their homes and their stories. This one belongs to you, too.
Designing luxury that resonates.
