In response Pope Gregory VIII issued the papal bull Audita tremendi calling for the Third Crusade and travelled to Pisa to end Pisan hostilities with Genoa so both seaports and naval fleets could join the battle.
Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa took up the Cross at Mainz Cathedral on March 27th 1188 and was the first to set out for the Holy Land in May 1189 with a Christian army of about 100,000 men, including 20,000 knights.
After passing through Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and the Byzantine Empire, he arrived at Anatolia, held by the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm.
With supplies running low the imperial army headed toward Iconium, but on May 18th encountered the forces of Qutb al-Din.
Barbarossa divided his army into two, one commanded by his son Frederick who lead an assault on Iconium, and the other commanded by himself facing the Turks on the battlefield.
The city fell, but the field battle required the presence of the emperor to defeat the massed Turkish forces.
With battle seemingly won, on June 16th Barbarossa drowned while crossing the Saleph river and in the aftermath most of his army disbanded.
Barbarossa's son, Frederick VI of Swabia, carried on leading the remnants of the German and Hungarian army, with the aim of burying the Emperor in Jerusalem.
But efforts to preserve the body failed.
As was customary his remains were separated and his flesh interred in the Church of St Peter in Antioch, his bones in the cathedral of Tyre and his heart in Tarsus.

Thereafter, the Holy Grail became interwoven with the legend of the Last Supper and gained its own notoriety.
Christianity added provenance when the Templars claimed to have discovered the Grail in Jerusalem during the Crusades, and later spirited it back to Europe.
Christianity provided a number of interesting stories as to the journey, and the final resting place of the Grail.
In the 14th century Lincoln Cathedral was the tallest building in the world, and in 1889 while undergoing repairs laborers raised a large Portland marble slab revealing the tomb of Oliver Sutton, Bishop of Lincoln, who had died in 1299.
Sutton ruled with a determined sense of justice.
His register described incidents in the course of which clerks were sometimes killed, rights of sanctuary violated and churches desecrated by bloodshed.
Next to his skeleton a small chalice was discovered, still standing where it had been placed almost 600 years earlier.
In the Holy Land, the Grail was revealed to have been the possession of the Crusader Prince Raymond of Antioch.
On his death in 1149 the Grail passed to his niece Eleanor of Aquitaine, who took it to England when she married Henry II.
Eleanor bequeathed the chalice to the Templars, but by 1280, it is claimed, Edward I passed the mythical chalice into the care of the clergy and, specifically, Bishop Sutton of Lincoln Cathedral.

Robert mortgaged his land, including the Duchy of Normandy, to his brother William II, in order to raise the money necessary to muster a Christian army and in 1096 led his forces to the Holy Land where history recorded the valiant soldier as a courageous leader during the First Crusade (1096–1099).
Robert’s army was the same size as the army of Godfrey of Bouillon but in addition, after Hugh the Great abandoned the Holy Land, approximately another 100 knights joined Roberts forces.
Robert led his army into battle at Dorylaeum (1097) the capture of Jerusalem (1099) and his courageous leadership contributed to the Crusaders victory at Ascalon in 1099.
While in the process of marrying, his brother William died, and his youngest brother Henry I seized the English throne.
Robert returned from the Crusades in 1101 and invaded England in the hope of reclaiming his throne but the resulting conflict between the two brothers lasted five long years until Henry I finally won a decisive victory at the battle of Tinchebray in Normandy.
Robert was captured on September 28th 1106 and held prisoner at Devizes Castle in England before being transferred to Cardiff Castle in Wales where he spent the remainder of his life in captivity.
In his 80’s when he died in 1134, Robert was laid to rest in the Abbey church of St Peter, later becoming the chapter house of Gloucester Cathedral.

Having sold his lands and taken out loans with the bishop of Liège and the bishop of Verdun, with his money Godfrey of Bouillon gathered a mighty Christian army and reached the Holy City in June 1099.
On July 14th and 15th Godfrey launched an attack and led his knights over the fortified walls of Jerusalem into the Holy City.
It was a sudden and brutal end to three long years of fighting, but by the grace of god Godfrey had recaptured the Holy Land and with it the Holy Sepulchre and the tomb of Jesus Christ.
At a council on July 22 Godfrey accepted the leadership of Jerusalem, not as King, but instead as a secular leader and Defender of the Holy Sepulchre.
During his reign, Godfrey vigorously defended his new Kingdom against internal and external foes.
His victory against the Fatimid army of Egypt, who he defeated at Ascalon in 1099, enabled him to retake the Muslim held cities of Acre, Ascalon, Arsuf, Jaffa, and Caesarea as tributaries of his Kingdom of Jerusalem.
But while besieging the city of Acre, Godfrey was struck by an arrow and killed, reported the Arab chronicler Ibn al-Qalanisi.
Godfrey's supporters, led by Warner of Grez, ensured his brother Baldwin was sworn in as the first Latin King of Jerusalem on December 25, 1100.
As the first ruler of Jerusalem, Godfrey is idolized in historical accounts and depicted as the leader of the Crusades, and was eventually included among the most fabled medieval knights known to history as the Nine Worthies.

Richards brother Prince John was planning insurrection hoping to supplant his brother when news broke of Richards impending return to England.
Richard and a small group of trusted Knights were on route in December 1192 when they were apprehended near Vienna by the forces of Duke Leopold of Austria.
Richard was handed over to Emperor Henry VI who demanded a 150.000 marks ransom.
On Richard‟s return to England on 13th March 1194 the witch hunt began for John‟s supporters and French sympathisers.
One such sympathiser was Jean de Gisors, the Norman lord and former vassal of King Richards who founded Portsea Island in 1180.
On Richards orders Gisor’s possessions in Hampshire fell to the crown, including the town of Portsmouth.
Richard’s exchequer was much depleted in respect of his ransom and so Richard set about selling all of the confiscated land, but not Portsmouth.
With Portsmouth, came control of lines of communication between his French possessions and England, including the movement of cargo, troops and munitions.
On May 2nd 1194 in his Royal charter Richard granted Portsmouth permission for an annual fifteen-day fair, weekly markets, a local court, and exempted its residents from paying the annual tax of £18.

The design of our collector’s box is influenced by the July 15, 1099 Siege of Jerusalem, the culmination of the First Crusade — a three-year military conflict waged by Pope Urban II and the steadfast knights of Europe in the Holy Land to reclaim Jerusalem and to aid their Eastern Christian allies in checking the advance of the Seljuk Turks in Anatolia.
Our richly illustrated collector’s box features Émile Signol’s epic 19th century painting “The Taking of Jerusalem by the Crusaders” (originally an oil on canvas), showing the legendary Flemish knight Godfrey of Bouillon, one of the Nine Worthies, victorious in the Holy City.
In the background, our collector’s box features a detailed 16th century map of the Middle East, the battleground of the crusades for more than two-hundred years, engraved and coloured by hand by the Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius — it featured in Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which is thought to be the first true modern atlas.
