The bird I shot as part of a double was missing a few distinct tail feathers. Back at camp it suddenly clicked with my buddy David who realized he had pics of this same bird scouting (swipe ⬅️). The crazy thing is that second pic he took scouting was taken 2.3 miles as the crow flies (or turkey) from where we killed it. It crossed a highway, and two mountains to get there…Here is what we learned.

We knew where this roost of birds went when they exited from pressure to the south (they stay on the same ridge system) but it was always a mystery where they would go when pressured north to the top of a rocky ridge. We did know if pressured hard they would pitch off that ridge and loop back to the south but when left alone they would disappear for a few days before returning…where did they go? This answers that question…to the next piece of ideal habitat and the closest mega roost. Now what makes that same group of birds return to this spot every time vs staying over where we killed them? My guess is 1. Competition for hens and 2. Predators as their original spot is better suited for turkeys than where we killed them.

I normally don’t like hunting the same place twice but after spending three years in this specific area it’s been cool putting all the data together and watching how and where the turkeys pick to call home as well as where they go when pressured. Some roosts are always there, but we continually find new ones every year 👊

I am glad I was able to recover on the missed head shot at ten yards…the hard thing about the head shot is how much they move around, especially when they are attacking the decoy 🤣
