Using BFS tackle for stream trout fishing is highly effective for catching a variety of trout, including brook trout, brown trout and rainbow trout. Small jigs worked aggressively will get you plenty of bluegill. The schools will be moving so, stay mobile to keep on them.
This guy ended up in the livewell and onto the smoker...and it was delicious. People hate on freshwater drum / sheepshead because they aren't the glamorous target species. They fight crazy hard, get massive and taste good...hard to find a fish that fits all. To top it off, there aren't y-bones either. Just a few easy to spot pin bones to pick out. Tell me what other freshwater fish has all those attributes?
Left the skin on one filet and skinned the other. Both were good in their own ways. The skin-on filet had firm meant with an oddly pleasant moisture to it, like a smooth oily infusion to the meat. The skinned filet was super firm unlike any fish I've ever cooked, still tasting great and taking on just enough smoke flavor. Both filets were cooked to 168° and smoked with a blend of maple, hickory and cherry for about 2 hours.
I've caught my fair share of walleye and I'll say, for catching dinner, I'd target drum 10/10 times over walleye.

Vertical jigging in deep weeds with pre-rigged jigs such as the Bucktail Jigs is a quick and efficient way to keep on the crappie when the bite is hot.
With fall coming up soon, I will be chasing crappie into transition areas near flats they will be feeding on young minnows as the water cools. I'm hoping for a 14 inch crappie this year!

Crappie are a fish that I want to learn more about. I have a decent number of them up this far north but, I tend to chase bluegill over crappie. Luckily, I know a few crappie fanatics via social media that can help steer me in the right direction.
The 1/16oz Bucktail Jig by balances great for vertical jigging. Not having to rerig and adjust soft plastics is nice for getting right back into the water after a catch.
Catching pike while using a swimbait for bass is a guarantee...just not usually this size. At just over 40 inches, this is the biggest fish I've ever caught!
It was hot with very little wind, driving fish to deep water. I was on the lookout for some offshore schools of small panfish, scanning the school to see if there were any bigger bass following. It's a pattern that has been yielding fewer but bigger fish for me this summer.
Saw a mark about 10ft below a cluster of fish. I pitched my Sunfish Swimbait to see what would happen. As the lure plummeted through the school, I saw the mark turn toward my lure. Of course I thought "hope it doesn't bite me off", as I assumed it was a 20 or so in pike from its shape and behavior. As the fish hit my lure, it turned and that mark got MUCH bigger.
After some open water tug-of-war, the fish came to the surface. I had a feeling of relief seeing the lure was in the corner of the mouth, with the line clear away from its sharp teeth. Some typical boat side pike shenanigans happened, the yo-yo to the surface and deep dive of the fish not giving up.
Luckily, the Musky Cradle was in the boat. Having improvised the metal frame poles as a push pole from a previous trip, the net was not ready to be deployed to land the fish. Faster than a NASCAR pit crew, that cradle came together and was in the water in a matter of seconds.
After unhooking and a few quick pics, the fish was placed back into the water and rocked in the cradle to allow it to catch it's breath. Once it started building up strength, I took it from the cradle and held it by its tail. To ensure a strong release, I held the fish until it pulled away with force. The fish swam off straight and strong as I watched in person then on Livescope as it swam away.
Would I ever ask for a pike to hit my swimbait when out bass fishing...DEFINITELY NOT. Us anglers of the north have paid the taxman enough to swear at the mere presence of a small pike. But when a big one hits, it's all worth putting up with the little slime rockets.
I rewarded myself and circled back to catch me a few of the pig bluegill I reluctantly passed up in persuit of learning more about swimbait fishing.

Oddly enough, carbon rods designed as finesse crank bass rods are among my favorite for big bluegill. Enough backbone to get a good hookset and control fish around weeds, with enough give to cushion the fight. You will thank me later when you are having to horse big bluegill from weeds.

This lake is really clear and has some pretty sharp dropoffs. The base of the log was at shoreline and the end of it was suspended in 35ft of water. This ambitious largemouth came from about the 15ft range, tucked right up under the log. Only when I got the swimbait to swim right up next to the log is when it darted out and crushed the lure.
Many affordable swimbait options, like the one above from, come in smaller sizes and are aimed toward these clear water feeding situations. Matching the hatch while looking like the easiest target among all the other prey is what I try for.
