Meet the Artist: DANIEL LANNES

Daniel Lannes is known for his vibrant paintings of Brazilian archetypes and historical icons, which he portrays in ambivalent and often ironic visual narratives.

“O Sonho de GetĂșlio 2 (GetĂșlio’s dream 2)” (2025) exemplifies this practice: beginning with a singular work depicting GetĂșlio Vargas, who positioned himself as head of state for eighteen years, first as a dictator and later as an elected official. Often misconceived as “O Pai dos Pobres” (the father of the poor), he created structural inequalities that mark the country to this day. One would imagine the ‘dream’ refers to GetĂșlio’s ambitions of shaping a modern and industrialized Brazil. But instead, he is depicted as dreaming of his lover, the famous Brazilian showgirl and actress VirgĂnia Lane. The authoritarian ruler is portrayed as submissive and lustful, at the mercy of the object of his desire. This way, the work entangles the private with the public and interrogates the strongmen aesthetics of contemporary world leaders and warmongers. Are they perhaps just chasing a private fancy?

The GLOBAL FASCISMS closing weekend features a wide-ranging program with exhibition tours, the book launch of the Global Fascisms Reader, film screenings, performances, keynotes, talks, and kids‘ disco. Free entry!

Meet the Artist: MUSSUNDA N’ZOMBO

Last two sessions of RUEDAS DE BULLERENGUE this year đŸ„

Join us for the last two sessions of the participatory dance and music format in which the maroon Afro-Colombian communitarian art form that is Bullerengue unfolds. The series takes place in the frame of the ongoing programme “Politics of Rhythm”, which stimulates dance and music practices—such as Bullerengue—to cultivate and preserve communitarian knowledge.

The ruedas in 2025 are led by Berlin-based vocal folklore facilitator Carolina Riaño, drummer Dante Parraguez, Leo Mejía, and Cristian Betancourt, and dance practitioners Renata Puelma and Séraphime Reznikoff, and other enthusiasts and experienced practitioners. Through these efforts, they aim to form the first local ensemble working solely to deepen the roots of this ancestral art Berlin. Emphasizing the importance of strengthening networks inside Germany and Europe, some of the sessions feature the presence and contribution of Hamburg-based music practitioners and facilitators Camilo Angola and Ámbar F. Álvarez. Both lead the traditional Colombian-Caribbean music groups Tambores del Diablo and Cantares del Elba.

Join us for the last session of PUMP, CREATE, ELEVATE đŸ”„

The last session of the series “Pump, Create, Elevate: Ballroom’s International Alliances” invites and fosters a mutual space for exchange and knowledge sharing beyond the European context of Ballroom. Within the format of a multimedia performance lecture, practitioners from Tunisia, Mexico, and Colombia share their local experiences through video contributions created for this particular occasion, including interviews and archival footage from each community. This is followed by a panel talk among members from the three different contexts, who are joined online by contributors responding from their respective locations. The session as a whole focuses on place-specific needs, historical and current particularities, and cultural and creative frames of reference, while also addressing current challenges communities face and the dreams they hope to achieve.

Co-conceived by HKW and House of St. Laurent, the “Pump, Create, Elevate” series aims to centre the global majority within Ballroom’s international community, and raise awareness about lived realities beyond the so-called Global North.

Before and after the evening’s presentations and discussions, a hang-out space is offered for relaxation, exchanging, movement, and to gain nourishment from the various Ballroom-related audiovisual, sonic, and printed materials on hand.
