I started sewing seriously back in 2011/2012. It all started with a sewing day camp I did for a week one summer with my cousin. I enjoyed it so much, I took lessons at the same place for a year and then did the summer camp again. By that point I was ready to go on my own my mom helped me read my 1st commercial pattern. I made a purple statin “medieval princess” dress which I didn’t wear much because the fit was a bit wonky and it didn’t have much of a wow factor. Then I made a pink 1850’s dress (photo 2) that I still wear to this day. Then I couldn’t be stopped and I just kept making things. I made a Renfair outfit (photo 1) and wore it to the 2nd Renfair I went to. A lot of my early projects focused on because I mostly just did civil war reenacting at the time. Since then I have expanded to a much wider range of time periods. I think my earliest outfit is now Greek and my latest is 1960’s.
My love of history had always been present and really took off with American Girl Dolls when I was about 7.

Thank you SewTech for sending me these awesome magnetic embroidery hoops as a gift! They worked perfectly with my brother embroidery machine. I really loved working with these! They are a lot easier to use than my tension hoops. These are definitely a game changer.

To test this project, I made an embroidery piece that I had always dreamed of making for myself. I used preset designs from my machine so it’s not an exact recreation, but do you understand the reference?

Madame Déficit has never heard of a budget…
Ok so this kind of cheeky caption I thought of made me think….did Marie Antoinette actually have a budget? A lot of royal households did have a budget. It turns out she did!! And it also turns out that she typically exceeded that budget as well. So I think this audio is still pretty spot on for our Queen Marie. It is also accurate for when I went to France on vacation.

According to an article I read on Yahoo Finance UK written by Danielle McAdam 24 October 2024
“The queen is estimated to have splurged on 300 new gowns a year and reportedly never wore the same outfit twice. In 1776, her dress allowance was 150,000 livres, a sum she exceeded by over threefold. For context, that figure roughly translates to $3 million (£2.4m) in today’s money.”

According to an article I found that was published by the New Yorker and written By Judith Thurman
September 18, 2006 “Her budget overruns on an annual clothing allowance of about $3.6 million in current spending power were, in some years, more than double.”

And while Marie Antoinette did spend a lot of money on clothes, Frances financial problems in the 18th century cannot all be blamed on this fashionable woman. There’s a lot more to it, and she was unfairly the main scapegoat.

We had an excellent time at Red Tower this weekend hosted by the Barony of Southdowns It was full of good company, honorable fights, tasty food, and great hair-dos!

One of my favorite parts of the event was the hair salon organized by Beatrix. She and her team did such a great job doing and experimenting with historical hairstyles! I was so excited to see and get to experience a sewn hairstyle!!

I (Sibilla) was wearing my Greek garb this weekend because it was so hot and therefor I asked for a hairstyle to match from a Greek bust I saw in the Louvre Museum (more about specifics in a separate post) Beatrix did such a great job and I enjoyed getting to wear it all day!

Odo fought in the Red Tower Tournament and the Baronesses Prize Great Weapons Tournament. We set up our day shade by the field and enjoying getting to watch the fights. Thank you to everyone who came and shared our shade, you are what really made the day.

Feast was excellent and of course we always enjoy the dancing!

Thank you to everyone who made this event so much fun!

Here we’re doing some 1930’s Dance moves with before the Chataqua. You can see us doing the “shoe shine” dance move popular at the time.

I’m wearing a true Vintage dress that fits like it was made just for me.

We were apart of our communities 250th anniversary celebration of American Independence. It was very moving for me to think about how I got to be apart of this historic moment in a place that my family has lived/ been adjacent to for 4 generations. I helped with living history activities throughout the day and then performed and taught historical dances with in the evening.

It was a very hot day and I enjoyed wearing my light cotton dress. I used the Amelia Jacket pattern to make the bodice and then drafted the petticoat. I have a vlog about making it on my YouTube channel, Historical Belle.

I’m still processing Fête Galante at Versailles. It was such an amazing evening! This is an event I’ve been dreaming of going to for almost a decade now. I remember learning about it in college and I just couldn’t believe it was real! It’s a dream! And I lived the dream last night and still almost can’t believe it.

I danced with the love of my life in the hall of mirrors. I heard the most Devine concert in the chapel as the harmonies swirled around me and the organ shook my bones. We walked the halls and apartments of Versailles. We met so many wonderful people! We watched fireworks stream over the gardens. (We crouched on the floor as our window had a down in front social contract) and as I sat on the cold marble, cooling me after a round of dancing, I thought to myself what an amazing perspective I had.

I wasn’t sure if this Fête Galants dream could ever be a reality, but thanks to the amazing community around us, we got to live the dream. Thank you to for working hard to get the tickets. Thank you to my parents for their never ending support of my creativity and passions. Thank you to my sweet friend Sefa who helped me get these costumes finished when time was staring me down with her perfect tiny hand finishing stitches. And thank you to my husband who learned and became the master of the embroidery machine and the expert button sewer. And thank you for creating such wonderful events!

I made my dress, my husband’s suit, and suit with the help mentioned above.

Scotland is a magical place. ✨ Everywhere we turned it felt like we were witnessing an enchanted scene. The River Sligachan at the base of the Cuillin Hills is no exception. This river is said to have been enchanted by the fairies.🧚🏻‍♀️
