My aspiration then was simple. A passion project to share my Tibetan culinary heritage in the city I lived in because there were none, during Summer while I worked a full time corp job as a Business Development Mgr.
When my vendor application got accepted, my anxiety went through the roof as I didn't think I was ready (something I am still unlearning to this day that it doesn't have to be perfect to start🙈).
Last weekend as I was preparing for pop up, I was going through my stuff & found a tent wall with a handwritten 'sign" from a decade ago and my tin cash box. I even borrowed much of the cookware to get started ☺️
You see the 2nd pic in the slide; I took it last weekend, when I looked at that side of the tent & the realization hit me that I have come a long ways, not just in my aspiration to build the 1st woman-owned Tibetan 🥟 brand but even in believing in myself that I too, can dare to dream big(ger) even as a mom nearing 50s.
And when I see long lines at our pop ups, even a decade later, I still have butterflies in my tummy like I did 10 years ago starting as a passion project. And to this day, when someone tries Tibetan food for the 1st time & I see their reactions, it still makes my Tibetan immigrant heart so happy that it could burst. For, for me, this is as much about food as it is about representation & keeping our Tibetan story alive.
And this year, we were the winner of SBA 2025 Nano Small Business of the Year for growth & impact. I couldn't have done any of it without your open hearts & minds & my crew. I couldn't have come this far without the village that formed & grew over time.
Thujeche (thank you) for seeing the heart behind the foods we make, truly.
And hope to see some of you this weekend.
Love,
Kyikyi
Cafe will be closed this week & no farmers mkts this weekend.
Hope to see you under the yellow tent with the smiling Tibetan snow lion.
Have a gentle week 💛
Love,
Kyikyi
Building, from scratch, the first woman-owned Tibetan food brand on my own terms has been one of the hardest and most intrinsically rewarding chapters of my life. And I am thankful that tomorrow still feels possible because of you💛
Thujeche (thank you).
Love,
Kyikyi
PS: Cafe is closed this week (break) and next week (we'll be at📍 )
Cold season means a slowdown in business in the food industry. And this is the time worry creeps in for me with the growing uncertainity.
But a couple of months ago, something my floral nursery vendor neighbor at mentioned really stuck with me and inspired me to refram how I look at this scary sales slowdown that occurs during the long cold season we have in Oregon.
During one of our conversations back in September, he mentioned their last mkt was in October and they close until April. I asked what they do during that long closure.
He said "work the land."
I'll save you the boring details of the introspection that followed for me that afternoon when I got home but something clicked & I decided that inspite of the uncertainity, I will till the soil I have.
And that’s what I’ve been doing the past month and a half; quietly, intentionally tilling the soil I have.
It’s quiet work, but it’s the kind I hope builds strong roots beneath the surface.
Winter may look still from the outside, but there is movement happening underneath.Stay tuned...spring is coming, and I can’t wait to share with you what’s growing💛
PS: today is the final Cafe day before it closes for 3 weeks. Will share details in next post.
Hope to see you today, or at one of our mkt stands this weekend.
Happy tilling, whatever that means for you💛
Love,
Kyikyi
Plus, as you can see in the video, our 🥟 are much bigger than your average 🥟 which means our sampling cost is high(er) and tbh, I wasn't sure if it was worth the added cost and the added logistics (sampling cookware, plates, napkins, washing station etc) knowing that a certain % of people will come for samples only🙈
Well, I tried sampling our Classic Juicy Beef momo 🥟 & our Chicken& Cilantro 🥟& dipping sauces (our grab-n-go bags includes the sauces too that's why)for the 1st time at an event recently & I was blown away by the results & also, as someone that also makes the food from scratch, seeing the reactions to our Tibetan food IRL was priceless to me💛😭
The result of sampling? We sold 300% more than usual and sold out within a few hours, restocked and sold out again with a couple of hours left in the event.
🎀While at the surface level this was about business & sampling, for me this was also a reminder, in life & in small business, to continue challenging my own assumptions.

Part of me is always learning & figuring out how to better communicate & address this FAQ question (especially through visual signages) & part of me is also UNlearning assumptions I had about how people shopped (like me)😄
One particular example that shows up in various ways, that challenged my own assumption was about how price value was gauged.
Most customers ask, how much first, followed by how many 🥟is in the bag. And I quickly realized, most never ask how big, like I would 😄
I still quite haven't figured out how to convey the portion part yet effectively, as our 🥟 is generously filled & much bigger (by wt) relative to the average 🥟 in the mkt.
📍Anyway, I will be at with 🥟 samples tomorrow. 10 am - 5 pm at The Redd. It's my first time at this event. Come say hi if you are there💛
📍Weekend Farmers Mkts
Have a gentle weekend or see you under the yellow tent with the smiling Tibetan snow lion💛
Cheers to learning & unlearning.

Not gonna lie, I thought I was gonna faint🤭 as I wrote the checks as I have been nurtured to be risk averse growing up a refugee but I have worked so so hard my whole life to earn my keep & save up although I honestly don't know if that will still be enough to cover all costs for a permanent home.
It's true, the financial & resource barriers to entry for the average BIPOC woman to grow their small business is extremely high & specifically the frozen food industry that I am trying to break into is even higher that's why the frozen food aisle; especially the 🥟 category at big boxes are predominantly large corporations.
Whatever the outcome; I thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me a fighting chance against all odds & purchasing my food, which will help towards the cost of this permanent home for my dream.

🕊 It is easy to feel inadequate when watching highlights of people's lives on social media, which is why I intentionally share with you my struggles throughout my journey to build the first woman-owned Tibetan food brand; not to seek sympathy but to show you also the not-so-glamorous nuances of life that we are all subject to but do not see often on social media.
🕊 This new year, I wish you growing happiness, love & the courage to do what's right even when nobody is looking and even when it's the unpopular thing to do.
🕊 Thujeche for showing me such grace, kindness & support this year even when you had nothing tangible to gain out of it. To me, that is the most priceless gift of all 💛
🌟 Proud to say my bags are Made in 🇺🇸 by a family owned business.
🌟 My beautiful packaging is designed by the talented local BIPOC brand designer
🌟 Shoutout to for supporting me with business resources to chase my dream, which has been priceless for me.
