.. but it’s my favourite week of the entire year.
This year I designed “Math Passports” for each student in our entire school. Every day, they ‘visited’ a new country, completed a math activity based on that country, and earned a few scrambled letters to help solve a secret message. Over the course of the week we built pyramids in Egypt, we worked on logic puzzles in Greece, worked on sharing food like Indigenous groups in Canada, learned about the Mayan number system in Mexico, and used deductive reasoning in Norway! 🧮
Over the course of the week, we solved the secret message “Math connects the world!”, and solved daily math riddles (with 3 various levels), and even got to estimate the quantity of candies in the candy estimation jar (AND the winner took it home with them!) 🍬
I’m exhausted after a long week of managing the activities, and after weeks and weeks of creating them. Butttt hearing the kids get excited about math in the hallways is EVERYTHING…. And the sweet thank you’s for creating it all?!!😭😭 Let me tell you - it was an absolute blast + I can’t wait to do it again next year. ✨
Can you solve the Norway logic puzzle on the 3rd slide? 🤔 What’s your estimation for the candy jar? 🧐
What started as a fun Friday treat for the kids turned into a full fledged little staff appreciation event run entirely by my students and I am SO glad it did. 🥹 When one of my students asked how we could give back to the staff, another suggested I make sodas for them too. That’s a lot of work for one person, butttt 🤔
A few days later I had students setting up the cart, making drinks, and taking and delivering orders to staff all week, and not only was it an incredible way to give back, but also taught some amazing communication + social skills. I could not be more proud of this Teacher Appreciation Week drink cart, or my students and their hard work.
(They’ve definitely earned another day with drinks of their own + I’ll be back behind the cart this time 🫡)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Who are standardized tests ACTUALLY helping?
The students who spend the entire time stressed and doing their absolute best? The teachers who already know the data? Administrators who definitely absolutely have enough time in the day to go through all of the results? 🤔
No? So who then? 👀🧐….

This year, we got to learn about the auroras, explore the exhibits and learn how to code robots and battle each other! I’m so thankful for this trip every year and I can’t wait to do it again next year. ✨🤍

This entire experience has truly been one of the most incredible things I’ve done as an educator. From zoom calls with the author, to chapter readings, to having students work in groups to peer edit, and creating chapter titles and cover art, there was not a single moment of this project that wasn’t hands on, and engaging for these students.
And now they get to HOLD THIS BOOK, take it home, and be so so proud of the hard work they’ve put in. 🥹🤍 my whole entire heart is full. This book is a labour of love - a children’s novel full of giggles, animals, and the wild adventures of Zeus the cat and his furry companions.
(And yeah, my students get to grow up saying they helped edit and publish a novel. How stinking cool is that?!!)
If you want to support the amazing author, and see our class’ hard work for yourself, comment “book!” below and you’ll get the link! 🤍

You can plan thoughtfully, adjust on the fly and support every student you can. And still some kids WILL struggle.
That doesn’t mean the lesson failed + it doesn’t mean you as a teacher failed either.
Learning is influenced by so many things outside the classroom, and sometimes the results of good teaching don’t show up right away.
Some of the work we do as teachers is planting seeds we may not see grow for a while.
And that’s still incredibly meaningful work 🌱
We were split into teams named after different countries, and students came dressed in their country’s colours ready to compete. I was on Team Great Britain + let me tell you… the energy was high all day long. (as per usual 📣 )
Each team was made up of a mix of Grade 4, 5, and 6 students, which was so incredibly cool to be part of! I don’t often get to teach my grade 6s (last years 5s🥹) anymore, and I don’t know the grade 4 is very well yet, so it’s a great way to be introduced to them! Older students stepped into leadership roles, younger students jumped right in, and the teamwork across grades was something really special.😭💛
They rotated through winter-themed events like ice jug curling (accuracy and strategy were key), hockey shoot accuracy, a bobsled race, Olympic trivia, and a ski team relay. Every station brought something different, and the kids really gave it their all 🎿
Today was definitely a core memory kind of school day + thank goodness I work with some incredible people who can make days like this happen for our students 🥹💛
… are you all teachers now or just me?
This novel edit project has easily been one of my favourite parts of the year. Watching students edit, revise, reread, suggest changes, and create for a real book has been project-based learning at its absolute best. 📚
And thennnn, teaching them how to use Canva to design mockups for a novel cover? Next level. These are real cover concepts they dreamed up and created completely on their own. 🥹✨🤎
Let your students take ownership of their learning. Teach them the hard things, even Canva. They’re more resilient and pick things up so much faster than we sometimes give them credit for. 📖
