🍋 How to tell if your mango is carbide-ripened (and why it matters)

Here’s some more tips on how to spot a carbide-ripened mango:

⚠️ 1. Hard inside, soft outside: Artificial ripening speeds up the skin, not the flesh → outside ripe, inside raw.
⚠️ 2. No strong sweet aroma: Naturally ripened mangoes smell fragrant even before cutting.
⚠️ 3. Powdery or chemical traces on skin: Sometimes you may notice whitish residue from ripening agents.

🚨 Why this matters for health:

Carbide is linked to neurological symptoms, memory loss & hypoxia

Can contain arsenic & phosphorus impurities, these have a range of effects from worsening allergies to potentially causing heavy metal toxicities

Artificial ripening reduces vitamin C and nutritional quality

Associated with digestive issues, ulcers, and potential long-term toxicity

Calcium carbide releases acetylene gas (a toxic mimic of natural ethylene)

Natural ripening uses tiny, controlled doses of ethylene (10–100 ppm). Carbide releases a weaker gas (acetylene), so much higher, unregulated exposure is used—making it less safe and less predictable

I personally believe it is better to opt for naturally ripened where possible, the fruit is usually not as “attractive” to look at but will be much sweeter and also better for health

Why bevu bella is the best way to consume neem:)

• Immune Boosting: Neem is rich in antioxidants, and together with the nutrient-rich jaggery, they strengthen the body against common ailments

• Digestive Health: Neem acts as a natural deworming agent, while jaggery aids in digestion and prevents constipation

• Balanced Metabolic Support: Neem helps reduce bile content and cools the body during the warm spring/summer season, while jaggery provides instant energy

• Skin Health: The mixture is known to purify the blood, reduce inflammation, and improve skin health.

Untreated hearing loss can accelerate dementia in the elderly ☹️

Research shows that older adults with moderate to severe hearing loss have a 61% higher prevalence of dementia compared to those with normal hearing.

Why?
When hearing declines, the brain has to work harder just to process sound. Over time, this cognitive overload, along with reduced social interaction, may accelerate brain degeneration.

We often blame ourselves for a lack of self control when we give into cravings. While willpower may be one cog in the wheel, there are other factors, and a major one is what we are surrounded by

We live in a food environment that is designed to make us buy and eat more, it is what researchers call an obesogenic environment

It is an environment that is bound to make you overweight if you simply give into the advertisements you are bombarded with, the ones that are designed to make you overeat

When you don’t have easy access to ultra processed food and 10 minute delivery, and have the opportunity to eat home cooked whole food your cravings automatically come down

It’s easy to blame the health crisis entirely on individuals, saying they lack “will power” or should just stop “junk”, but policy makers have a responsibility as well, to make better laws on advertising, labelling, formulation

This is just some food for thought:)

💌 DM me LACTATION to automatically receive my free postpartum lactation foods guide

Moringa flowers aren’t just seasonal or ornamental — they’re quietly powerful 🌼
Traditionally used in postpartum diets across South India, moringa flowers are:
• Rich in iron, calcium & antioxidants
• Gentle on digestion during the postpartum phase
• Traditionally used to support lactation & recovery
• Anti-inflammatory and nutrient-dense

While most clinical research focuses on moringa leaves, the flowers contain similar bioactive compounds and are valued in traditional diets for supporting maternal nutrition during breastfeeding.

Simple ways to use them:
– Chutney
– Added to dal or soppu palya
– Steamed and tempered gently

Teach me how to use this please 😅

This chilli is so spicy farmers used to grow it on their hedges to deter elephants, it is one of the spiciest chillies in the world

We underestimated its spice and it was so hot, we had to step out of the house till the smoke subsided

It holds medicinal value and was traditionally used for everything from arthritis, to stimulate appetite, and also for driving away colds and infections

It was also used to remove drishti, and burned outside homes to drive away negative energy

Now I have no clue how to use this, I would love if you tell me how its traditionally prepared!

Starfruit wine ⬇️

We made a big batch so please adjust your ratios to what you are making:)

Ingredients:
🌟Fruit of choice (we used starfruit but most types of fruit works with this recipe)
🌟Sugar/rock sugar - we used sugar here but rock sugar will be better
For about 5-7kgs starfruit we used 4kgs of sugar
🌟2-3 tbsp Dried yeast (optional but recommended as it aids in the fermentation process)
🌟5-6 pieces cinnamon bark 10 cloves

Method:
🌼Wash and dry the fruit completely, there should be no water on the fruit

🌼 Activate the dried yeast (follow instructions on packet)

🌼Add sugar to water and warm it over a flame - bring to a light syrup texture (ensure it is not too thick) and set aside to cool

🌼Chop the fruit and blend in a mixer

🌼Sieve the pulp with a strainer

🌼Then sieve it again with a muslin cloth

🌼Then sieve the liquid once more till it is semi clear and there is no residue left

🌼Mix the strained juice and sugar in a clean dry glass jar and mix slowly. Add the yeast dissolved in water.

🌼Add the spices and close the jar - seal with a cloth and tie the jar tightly

🌼Store in a cool dark place for 21 days

🌼Open and check for methanol using a flame test (you can google how to do this - the caption won’t fit it)

🌼enjoy your wine! It lasts for years if it is stored properly

⚠️Who should not consume: there are some reports of neurotoxicity due to consumption of excess starfruit in those with renal issues.

If you have any kidney related disorder it’s best to skip starfruit wine all together

HERBESHWARI’S CARDINAL RULES FOR DRINKING:

* Stick to 1 type of alcohol

* Hydrate hydrate hydrate - a glass of water for each drink!

* Cut out the sugary mixers

* Dilute your drink with ice, soda, or fresh juice

* Eat before drinking, ALWAYS

* Learn to SAY NO, if you do not want to drink - don’t let somebody pressure you into having a sip

Hope this helps, bye:)
My ajji is the epitome of mindful eating, she eats every single food a diabetic is told not to have but her blood sugar is still in the normal range since the last few years. She does not take any medication or insulin to manage her diabetes.

She has a strong family history of diabetes and used to take artificial sweeteners a few decades back. But now she eats regular sugar, jackfruit, mango, ice cream and her levels are still not compromised.

We reassess her diet every few months, and I give her some tips but it is largely all her:)

Some things that help her maintain her sugar levels:
🍦She walks for 10 mins after each meal

🍦She opts for an early dinner, and occasionally will have one portion of dessert around 40 mins after dinner

🍦She has some nuts then her tea (with sugar) in the morning

🍦She eats very slowly and deliberately, taking only one portion at a time and finishing before having the next

🍦She says no when she does not feel like eating something

🍦She eats her meals on time

🍦Dessert is weekly 1-2 times and usually home made

She checks her blood sugar 💉every few weeks and if it is higher than it should be, she cuts back a little on the desserts.

Typically though, she eats sweets maybe 1-2 times a week and it is largely home made and with good quality ghee (this helps to soften the sweet spiking 📈her blood glucose)

I have worked with several diabetic clients and helped them reintroduce normal food back into their diets, and let me say, it’s very possible to eat normally and manage your blood glucose. My gmaw though is my top patient hehe! She listens to my every word to the T and that’s one of the reasons her glucose is top notch:)

It is not just what you eat but how you eat it that matters too. 👀Look at your food, chew well and eat till you are full - these take some time to learn but can be a game changer for both diabetics and the rest of us ✨

⚠️: diabetes can get serious if unattended, always seek professional help if in doubt 🙏🏼

I am talking about type 2 diabetes not type 1 which is completely different:)

I am sure you have heard this in recent times, and I wanted to provide some perspective on whether dal really is protein and why it matters so little in the context of eating and remaining healthy

There is always more to the story than the headline, so please go through the slides before you jump to any conclusions:)
