Havank is the lead character of two comic albums by Danier (Daan Jippes). The first one ran in our local newspaper when I was 16 and I got to buy the second album directly from Daan at a comic con a few years later, so I got lucky and loved to study the art as I was learning to draw better. It's strongly inspired by 1950s Franquin which was then still new to me. The comics are loosely based on the Dutch 'Shadow' (Schaduw) detective novels by the author Havank. They're known for their covers with a silhouette by the artist Dick Bruna (of Miffy/Nijntje fame), so I thought it would be fun to add a silhouette 'shadow' as a base. The sculpture snaps on with magnets that are baked into the feet. The sculpture itself is made of super sculpey, a type of clay that stays soft until you bake it and can be baked multiple times, making it possible to work on it a little bit over a long stretch of time. It's painted with acrylic paint plus a type of very matte extra black acrylic paint that make the pants and hat look like a silhouette like in the inked comics. It's now standing in Daan's studio!
