Located directly adjacent to Munich International Airport, the design of the Munich Arena deliberately breaks away from the strict orthogonal grid of the airport’s architecture. At the western edge of the airport grounds, the building integrates seamlessly into a generously landscaped park environment – the Meadow.
Elevated and visible from the nearby motorway, the arena becomes a striking landmark for both arriving guests and passersby, while its layout allows for clear wayfinding with separate, multilevel entrances. Visitors reach the main entrance via a spacious forecourt, the Arena Plaza, leading directly into the ground floor, which merges seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Additional entrances on the upper level are accessed via gently meandering paths through the Meadow, guiding visitors to the elevated podium that wraps around the arena.

The masterplan for the Innovation Park integrates office spaces, laboratories, residential buildings, a hotel and amenities on a 23ha site. New technologies and ideas are meant to be “thought out, tested and lived” all in the same place, enriching the lives of over 5,000 people working and residing on the campus.
A lavish garden forms the heart of the Innovation Park, attracting new visitors and providing a lush green space for regeneration and relaxation. Its meandering water landscape also functions as a retention basin for rainwater, supporting local biodiversity and creating a pleasant microclimate. Reeds filter and clean grey water. The green heart is surrounded by a ring of buildings accentuated by four office towers hosting a diverse program, including innovation hubs, workspaces for start-ups, laboratories, a conference and welcoming center. A residential district on the eastern side of the campus follows an analog, down-to-earth design approach, embracing a digital detox in an environment accelerated by computation and data.

In a tendering process, we designed a new academy building based on an urban development concept conceived by kleyer.koblitz.letzel.freivogel and KUULA. The new build functions as the institution’s communicating center to bring together instructors and trainees.
Besides the academy building, new structures will be built to accommodate sports and training facilities as well as vehicle depots. In addition, we will renovate the listed buildings located on-site, including two hangars dating back to the 1960s and 1970s whose impressively large, clear-span halls provide space for replicating operational scenarios that can be used regardless of weather conditions. This is where houses resembling residential buildings will be available for training purposes.

The facade and outer appearance of the building is characterized by large, fixed window elements that fan out to the north and thus enable basic shading. The staggered arrangement of opaque and transparent elements lends the building a subtle depth and allows it to change in an interplay of light and shadow.
Inside, open, transparent spatial structures enable varying office typologies that combine areas for communication and concentration, providing a bright, varied working environment for both customers and employees. In order to ensure maximum flexibility, the building can also be divided into smaller units and rented out if required. Two main entrances with their own foyers allow for the clear separation of users on the ground floor. Spacious, transparent stairwells and open connecting bridges enable those inside the building to quickly gain their bearings while providing versatile visual connections both inwardly and outwardly.

On all office floors, different modes of work – physical and virtual, loud and quiet – can take place in parallel thanks to an acoustic concept that includes sound-absorbing walls, ceiling panels and heavy felt curtains, through to the spatial organization of offices and meeting rooms.
The livelier zones are organized around the interior atriums and include spacious tea kitchens and rooms for collaborative work. Around the perimeter, our interior design placed quieter areas for focused work, including telephone boxes and meeting rooms that serve the individual agencies.

Our design proposes the addition of two buildings linked to the existing building via bridges to construct a coherent complex. Newly added, centrally located communication areas create a collaborative interface between the two institutes.
The new IOSB building situated in the eastern part of the site includes a two-story testing facility covered with a shed roof in which robotics projects will be tested on an area of 650 square meters. The new buildings are designed as hybrid structures including façades consisting of wood and recycled aluminum. Photovoltaic panels will be installed on their south-facing façades and on all rooftops to generate electricity.
Start of construction is scheduled for 2027.

The campus is conceived from the center as a gravitational core. Rather than prioritizing short routes, it encourages and guides movement through the rings – each with its own character – offering diverse experiences, opportunities for inspiration, and vibrant exchange. A place where serendipitous encounters spark new ideas and ways of thinking.

The building is set back facing Frankfurter Straße, thus generating the space for a public square – Emanuel Merck Platz. The orthogonal shape of the architectural volume is derived from the context of the neighbouring buildings, simultaneously acting as a contrast to the animation of the building’s inner workings.
