😳 Share this with anyone who could be using this chrome extension! A recent investigation into the Urban VPN Proxy Chrome extension highlights serious privacy concerns.

Here’s what happened:

Urban VPN markets itself as a free VPN (a tool meant to hide your IP address and protect your privacy while browsing).

What researchers found:
The extension was quietly collecting full conversations from AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, and others.

What β€œcollecting conversations” means:
-Your prompts (what you type into AI tools)
-The AI’s responses
-Timestamps, session details, and which AI platform you were using

This is not only usage stats, it’s the actual content of conversations.

How it does this:
The extension injects scripts (small bits of code that run inside web pages) into AI sites. These scripts intercept data before it reaches your browser, similar to someone reading messages as they pass through a mailbox.

Important detail:
This data collection happens even when the VPN is turned off. Installing the extension alone is enough.
- No meaningful opt-out:
There is no setting to disable this behavior. The only way to stop the data collection is to remove the extension entirely.

Why this matters:
- AI chats often include personal, professional, or sensitive information
- Many users assume AI conversations are private or ephemeral
- A tool advertised as increasing privacy was doing the opposite.

This is a form of man-in-the-browser behavior (monitoring data inside your browser session)

It raises questions about extension review processes and trust signals like Chrome’s β€œFeatured” badge It highlights how browser extensions can become high-risk data collectors with broad access

⚠️ TLDR: This is a reminder that β€œfree” privacy tools can come with hidden costs, and that browser extensions, especially those with wide permissions, deserve the same scrutiny as any other software handling sensitive data.
Browser-in-the-Browser (BitB) phishing attacks are a convincing type of online scam that’s designed to steal your login information.
In a BitB attack, a website creates a fake login window inside your browser tab. It looks exactly like a real sign-in pop-up from trusted services like Google, Microsoft, or a work account. The branding, the URL bar, and even the lock icon are all carefully copied.

This fake window isn’t a real browser pop-up. It’s built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (the same tools used to build websites) to look like a browser window, even though it isn’t one.
Phishing means tricking someone into giving up sensitive information, like usernames or passwords.

The goal of a BitB attack is to convince you to type your credentials into this fake window so they can be sent directly to the attacker.
These attacks usually start when someone clicks a link from a phishing email, a malicious advertisement, or a social engineering message (a message designed to create urgency or trust, like a fake support alert).

Once the credentials are entered, they’re immediately sent to an attacker-controlled server. To avoid suspicion, the victim may then be redirected to the real login page or shown an error message.

This technique was first documented by security researcher mrd0x and has since been observed in real-world attacks, including campaigns linked to the threat group Ghostwriter.

How to spot it:
Try dragging the login window. A real browser pop-up can be moved outside the tab. A fake one can’t.

As these scams become more realistic, the best defense is awareness. If something asks for your login, slow down and double-check how it’s being presented.
For more than 20 years, 50 million women were denied relief from menopause symptoms because of a misinterpreted study.

The FDA Commissioner himself has called this β€œone of the greatest screw-ups in modern medicine.”

The Women’s Health Initiative study that caused the fear was conducted on women who were, on average, 63 years old, more than a decade past menopause. The difference in breast cancer risk was reported in a way that sounded alarming, and the media ran with it.

Doctors stopped prescribing hormones. Medical schools stopped teaching hormonal menopause management. Women were told to β€œtough it out” or were placed on antidepressants instead.
The black box warning is now being removed because the evidence never supported the panic in the first place.

I talked about this today with on Trust Issues!

If your company’s tech plan is to β€œlet AI build it all,” your budget will pay for it later. On NPR KUOW’s Booming, I spoke with Monica Nickelsburg about how AI prototypes can open doors, but unmanaged they become unreliable, insecure, and expensive to maintain.

Use AI wisely. Consult a developer before making any long-term budget or product decisions about your software.

This was such a fun conversation! You can listen to the full episode of Booming β€˜The cleanup crew mopping up AI slop’ wherever you get your podcasts. 😊
