7.5 years of living in this beautiful country, the longest my family and I have lived in one location.
We started off as a family of four. My oldest was 12.5 years old, my youngest 6.5 years old when we first moved to Germany in December of 2018.
Our first overseas tour, we didn’t know what to expect, and we didn’t think we’d be living in Europe for this long. We’re used to moving every 3-4 years courtesy of my husband’s job.
We raised our two girls here, explored Europe and parts of Asia, and found our love for the slow European life.
We met so many wonderful friends that became family, only to have to say goodbye to them as they moved back stateside, and finally found our village once again as we were leaving.
Our German neighbors became family, and will forever hold special places in our hearts. We built a village within our village. We still couldn’t speak the language, but luckily they knew English and taught us a few German words.
Germany is where we learned to slow down, enjoy our surroundings, and appreciate life even more without the busyness.
It’s where we bought our second home, a place we knew we’d love forever, a second home away from wherever home is after 6.5 years.
So, our European adventure ends here (hopefully for now), a bittersweet ending. I think I cried so many times that at the end of it all, I just knew I couldn’t cry anymore.
We started as a family of four, then left as a family of three while my oldest is back stateside enjoying her own adventure.
Who would’ve thought a girl who grew up from South Georgia 🇺🇸 would have the opportunity to live in Europe? I’ll never take this wonderful opportunity for granted!

What is it: Rail bike with family or friends.
Location: The route runs between 📍 Altenglan and 📍 Lauterecken all day in one direction, no oncoming traffics.
On odd numbered calendar days, the tour begins in Altenglan. On even numbered days, you will begin at Lauterecken.
Season and Opening Times:
Season is from April to October
from April to June; and August to October opening days are Wednesday to Sundays. July open daily.
Recommended times to start: between 0900 to 1500
Total milage of tour: about 20km one way or 12.4 miles. The route can take up to 2.5 hours without stops, but can take up 3-5 hours with stops such as picnics and playground breaks. If you do stop, you have to remove the bike from the rail for others to pass through.
Railcar Options:
There are several options to choose from: 4-people rail car where two people pedal the cart and the other two can relax and enjoy the ride. This can be manual or E-bike option. The Conference rail can accomodate up to 7 people and three people pedal. Electric rail cars are also available. Finally a 20 person carriage.
We chose the 4-person option with two pedalers. Ours had manual pedaling but with an electic assist control button (kind of like an e-bike) to assist. I highly recommend this option with kids.
Price: for the e-bike option we paid €65 for our 4 person rail car on a weekend.
Absolutely recommend this for a summer/fall activity in Rhineland Pfalz if you are near Altenglan or Lauterecken!

If I could take these windows with me, I would.
The windows inside German homes are nothing like what I’ve seen Stateside.
They are essential for German homes, especially when airing out the house.
German homes are very well insulated and therefore, it’s important to open the windows (also called “Lüften”) for atleast 5 minutes daily or more to prevent molds, reduce humidity, and clean the air.

↠ You enjoy drinking tea and trying all sorts of flavors
↠ you take quiet hours seriously
↠ You’ve gotten used to quiet Sundays (kind of)
↠ Fresh meat from the local butcher is a must

We’ve been doing a lot of behind the scenes lately at home and this solo trip was just a breath of fresh air.
Recommendations for this trip… just take the darn solo trip girls!:)
I’ve been to Paris a few times, but solo traveling Paris was on another level!
I discovered some areas of the Left Bank I haven’t visited before and realized I loved that side of the river more than the Right Bank.
I visited the Musée D’ORSAY, which has been on my list forever and I was able to admire Monet, Renoir, Dega’s, and more paintings at my own pace!
Ate at hole in the wall places I adored. Went shopping without being rushed lol.
Discovered Jardin du Luxembourg and officially realized I loved it more than Jardin des Tuileries (just my opinion).
I didn’t really have an itinerary, but knew I wanted to stick to the Left Bank around Saint Germain des Pres which is probably my favorite area in Paris.
Of course I remained cautious and alert the entire time but felt safe enough in the surroundings I chose.
It was nice to take my time in the museums, book stores, parks, shopping, all the things!
Don’t get me wrong, I always love having my family with me when I travel, but sometimes it’s just nice to do your own thing at your own pace once in awhile.

I don’t think I have ever done a proper introduction on this platform. So, I figured I should finally do one, huh?
Hi 👋! My name is Moneth, and I’m so glad you’re here!
I started right before the pandemic to help document and share our life in Germany and our travels. A way of journaling our life abroad.
I have actually been blogging since almost 12 years ago, when I was pregnant with my youngest. I have mostly kept them private among family and friends. I still have my old Blogger site, although it is still very much private.
My family and I have traveled for years, but we weren’t always like this.
I’m originally from the Southern U.S., where my husband and I met in college. We have two daughters, although they’re no longer the little ones we started traveling with.
I used to think my life would always be on the East Coast, and I loved being a homebody.
I used to think travel was a nuisance and that shopping was a much better choice; it’s just how I grew up.
It wasn’t until my husband convinced me that experiences were far more important than buying that purse.
So, we went on one of our Fall getaways with our two little ones while living in Virginia, and from that moment on, I had a different view of travel.
I realized how much fun it was making memories while traveling, especially with our little girls.
I still remember one of our earlier trips as a family at the Resort in Virginia.
My husband’s job then moved us across the country to California, my first time away from the East Coast. And it was here in California where our travels really elevated, and we have not looked back since.
After one look at the West Coast and all that it offered, I knew there had to be more beautiful places like the coastlines of Big Sur.
So, now that we have been living in Germany for a few years, and this isn’t to brag or anything, but we have been forever grateful for the travel opportunities here.
We try to take advantage of our time off and shoot off to somewhere we haven’t been.

It all started here… the view that changed my
perspective of travel.
I remember my husband telling me we’d be moving to California. I had never lived or gone anywhere as far out as the East coast, and the West was new territory for me. We weren’t big travelers then, and the girls were still very young. My husband was always trying to convince me that we should travel more and experience new things. But, I didn’t want to leave my comfort zone; I was a homebody, a mom, and working as a full-time Nurse whose downtime hobby was shopping. I liked adventure, but travel wasn’t my thing back then.
I had it in my head I didn’t want to move out West, I even had a different view of California. But once we moved and unpacked our household goods and started to venture out and about our new home, I instantly fell in love.
And, this view did it for me, Big Sur!
I realized there was so much more out there the world had to offer. The travel bug hit us then and we hadn’t looked back since.
I’m forever thankful for this experience that brings me to where we are today.
