“Late Winter, Late Spring” marks a pivot in Fanning’s practice following her relocation from Los Angeles to New York. Where her LA interiors leaned into the frictionless comfort of sun-saturated California domesticity, this work introduces something more restless: a view poached from the window of her new apartment, grafted onto an interior that exists only in the imagination. The result is a hybrid space, part observed, part invented, in which the figure’s uneasy cohabitation with his cat becomes the painting’s quiet subject. The animal, rendered with unmistakable specificity, carries the painting’s emotional register, her flattened ears and coiled posture a kind of feline commentary on adjustment, on the ambivalence of arrival. As with much of Fanning’s work, the humor is deadpan and precise, but here it opens onto something more openly tender.

Adelisa Selimbašić’s “Where we become each other”, on view at Lubov, begins with a Kantian problem: beauty is purposeless, yet its effects in the world are not. The exhibition takes the rave as its conceptual site precisely because the dancing body is the purest embodiment of this paradox: radically unproductive and yet generative of something the artist calls recognition.

Selimbašić found each of her subjects by watching them dance, a mode of looking that operates closer to Freud’s notion of sexuality than to biological desire: distributed, fixated on surface before it is ever organized by identity. The paintings themselves perform a similar logic. Working with a contained palette and mixing pigments directly on the canvas, she constructs figures whose tactile density refuses the distance of the gaze. At 14 x 16 inches, they are almost uncomfortably close. What the work proposes is an ontology of contact: the body known through its permeability, its capacity to be altered by proximity.

Mario Dávalos’s paintings take aim at what he calls the erasure of experience: the Baudrillardian logic by which the natural world is packaged, controlled, and sold back to us as spectacle. It’s stripped of danger, autonomy, and even the sacred. Working from a sensibility formed by expeditions to genuinely remote places such as the Arctic tundra where the protective apparatus of civilization dissolves, Davalos returns to paint the opposite: the choreographed gardens, curated waters, and recreational landscapes of mass tourism, rendered as what they are: caricatures, near-ridiculous in their sterility. For Dávalos, these are not celebrations of progress. They serve as evidence of a distortion, a world where nature has been evacuated of meaning and converted into sign.

We are excited to present the work of at Arco Lisboa soon.

Working entirely within a single coral register, Selimbašić lets a torso emerge through the subtlest pressure of tone against tone. No outline, no contrast. Just paint behaving like light on skin. The Bosnian-Italian artist, trained at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, builds a practice around the female gaze as a painterly question.

Today, Museum Sztuki in Łódź inaugurates “Gifts of Friendship” — one of the most significant collection presentations in the museum’s recent history. Bringing together nearly 150 artworks donated to the museum between 2024 and 2026 by 80 artists from dozens of countries, the exhibition foregrounds friendship, trust, and long-term collaboration as forces that shape a collection beyond market logics.

The gesture is not incidental. It recalls the avant-garde roots of the institution, which in 1931 initiated the International Collection of Modern Art through artists’ donations: a founding act of solidarity that ms¹ now echoes, nearly a century later, through this extraordinary accumulation of gifts.

Among the works entering the permanent collection is a painting by Fernando Varela from his “Fragmentations” series; a body of work that has long engaged questions of surface, dissolution, and the image’s resistance to coherence. To see it now housed within one of the oldest museums of modern art in the world, in dialogue with this constellation of international voices, is something we at Heliconia Projects are genuinely proud of.

Curated by Barbara Piwowarska, “Gifts of Friendship” is installed across the galleries of both ms¹ and ms², and asks how collections are shaped not only through acquisition policies and historical canons, but through acts of generosity that redefine the museum as a site of shared authorship.

Congratulations to Muzeum Sztuki and to Varela.
Two painters, two subjects, one preoccupation: the gap between what is there and what we have learned to see. Adelisa Selimbašić on the body. Mario Dávalos on the wild. Swipe to explore —>

While contemporary #Caribbean artists are beginning to receive greater commercial and institutional attention internationally, much of what is unfolding in the region’s local scenes remains disconnected from the global art world.

The newly launched nomadic gallery aims to build global pathways for Dominican and Caribbean art while cultivating local arts scenes capable of sustaining themselves over the long term.

At the helm are two Venezuelan-born art professionals, patrons and collectors, Elsa Maldonado and Nicole Bainov, who, after relocating to the #DominicanRepublic, saw this gap and felt compelled to act.
