First time going out in Rio (as in leaving the hotel) was like preparing for battle - only little money in the handbag, card and the rest of the cash hidden in the small pocket inside the jeans, leaving the watch at the hotel and having to remember that under no circumstances is it OK to take your phone out of your bag on the street. Almost like getting robbed in Rio is inevitable. Everything was fine. It turns out that using common sense and just being careful (as opposed to paranoid) works in Rio the same as everywhere else. I even took my phone out for some photos. The tourist places are generally OK, Copacabana was a bit dodgy, I'll admit that.
I did take a big precaution and learned Portuguese before my trip. Started the minute I booked the trip 🌎 This was VERY useful. I feel much more at ease when I understand what is being said around me. Also, not many people speak English or even Spanish, so I'd say learning some common phrases and expressions is already a bonus 😉

I'd definitely recommend visiting Buzios. It was very calm and just relaxing tbh. I mostly came across local and Argentinian tourists and felt safe overall. The thing to consider is that unless you're driving, be prepared for a LOT of ubering. That goes for Brazil in general. Luckily Uber is very cheap, at least by European standards. I also loved my stay, the beautiful boutique guesthouse was just perfect for my 5 night stay. The pool, the location (Geriba), the breakfast (delicious and wheat free). Would go back 100% 🤤
