The most characters I’ve ever drawn together has always been two, but for some reason I decided to draw five this time lol. I wanted to draw them all, but doing them separately felt wrong, so… I really tested my patience with this illustration. My gallery is full of terrible, cringy photos of me posing to better understand how their bending moves worked. And also, since I want to improve, I try new things with each illustration, so the coloring process for this one was a complete mess (if you watch the speed paint, you’ll see the thousand changes I made because nothing seemed quite right). But hey I’m really happy with the final result, so I’ll call it a win.
Anyway, who’s your favorite character on this team? Mine are definitely Sokka and Zuko in that order, but I love them all. And they all look GREAT as adults (we really had to see them in their prime to understand. *wink* *wink*).

Okay, I got lost in commissions again, though that’s not the only reason for my inactivity. I wanted to do this illustration in a somewhat sketchy style, experimenting with colors and techniques to get out of my art block. I’ve been through many blocks before, and I know when one directly attacks my motivation. Even though I’m aware that my style is changing quite a bit in a short time (probably because I’m not drawing much), I don’t feel it’s as big a problem as my lack of motivation. Since I had to stop drawing because I was very sick, I haven’t been able to get back into my old routine. I hope to change little by little tho. It’s true that I’m doing more than in previous months, and there are many commissions that, unfortunately, I can’t upload to my profile yet. I also suppose I have to learn not to leave an illustration half-finished and forget about it lol. It’s happening way too often. Chaotic artist core, I guess 🤷🏻♀️

Anyway, here’s a little lore to better understand the context!
🔸“It’s not natural for imperials like you to fight.”
In the Empire of Nexus, “imperials” are the elite of society, those with the most wealth and power. Social strata are very divided, and it’s almost impossible to move from one to another. In fact, imperials represent only 0.5% of the population, yet they possess the majority of the wealth. This leads to extreme classism among the citizens, which is one of the main themes I explore in my book.
One way or another, Dahlia (an imperial) ends up collaborating with the enemy (the rebels, who aren’t even part of the social structure. They are called “non-citizens”). And what do you think might happen when an imperial and a rebel collaborate? Of course, it’s a disaster. While Dahlia remains proud, Ulmer constantly criticizes her for being a “spoiled brat.” Even though she’s the brains behind every mission, the physical part is difficult for someone who wasn’t trained as a soldier, so Ulmer ends up, as he always says, “babysitting” her. In fact, there are many passive-aggressive conversations between them like this one here lol.
Doesn’t this look like the first part of the previous reel? It’s better to imagine they end up laughing together on a rooftop 🤭
PS: This audio made me laugh so much because when it says, “It’s not natural for someone to be as stupid as tall,” it reminded me of them. All the main cast know Ulmer is quite tall, so saying something like that makes the insult even worse, lol.

I’m rewriting the first draft of my book (yes, at this point it’s a rewrite because I’m changing a lot of things) and adding more action scenes. Dahlia is usually the brains behind the technical side of missions, but when it comes to the practical side… well, her recklessness gets her into danger, all to achieve her goal. Ulmer is forced to be a sort of grumpy babysitter to keep things from getting worse.
I’m honestly having a lot of fun writing about their dynamics: They begin as enemies from opposing sides (different social classes) and spend most of the story as reluctant allies driven solely by self-interest. They have to destroy the Empire, but who knows if it’s worth to even tolerate eachother to achieve that?

Cold hands ❄️
I’ve been wanting to make a video like this for a while, but I’ve been so focused on finishing the book that I’ve had little time to draw.
Anyway, after almost finishing the first manuscript (I have just one chapter left!), I feel like I know my characters a lot better. Many things have changed during the process, and I don’t even know why. At the time of writing, I simply felt that character X wouldn’t act that way.
So, let me explain a little about this dynamic!
Initially, Dahlia was designed to be introverted while Ulmer would be extroverted. In a dramatic turn of events, they ended up swapping these qualities (Dahlia is ENTJ / Ulmer is INTJ). For some reason, whenever I wrote a closer interaction between them, he would get upset by his thoughts or get a mental block. Feeling and experiencing something outside of his logic is a REAL problem. She’s somewhat calmer in that regard because she’s more able to externalize her emotions in some way.
Ah, I had a great time writing about them. Wish me luck in finding a literary agent and getting the chance to write the sequel:’)
P.S: I’ve said this before, but Dahlia comes from a snowy region (Frimir) while Ulmer comes from a desert one (Libehco), so on a snowy day I’m sure he’d freeze to death. I tried to draw their clothes appropriately to reflect that!

I’m enjoying this adventure more than I thought I would. Designing worlds and characters has always been my great passion, and I’m glad I can do it with my own story. There are many things I haven’t added because they’re still in development (like the aesthetics of the Frimir and Libehco regions, which are already designed but need to be refined, or the Empire’s flag), but everything will come in due time. I plan to do another post with the characters (specifically the Studient Council and other royals along Jade) and another with the most important places, as well as give a sneak peek of the second part of the story, which features that neighboring kingdom called Sirocco and Jasmine, which you already know, but deserves a good introduction. There are some very interesting things coming in the future! 🙌🏻

Her character origin pretty much sums up the synopsis of the main plot (or at least the first part of it). Here’s a bit of lore:
“Dahlia was a student at the Academy of Nexus, where young adults are trained to lead the nation of tomorrow. Not all that glitters is gold, as it was a place corrupted by the great elites, just like the nation itself. Even being part of the student council, which granted great social influence, nothing can help you if the system turns against you. Without knowing why, everything she knew crumbles, and she must use everything she’s learned at the Academy to fight against this corrupt country that tries to oppress her. Perhaps she’s not so different from her enemies, as she doesn’t hesitate to do anything to achieve her goal. Even if that means destroying the nation... or ruling it.”
The Ruler of Nexus is a self-proclaimed title, as she was never actually royalty and doesn’t want to call herself “queen.” I liked the concept of someone who ends up becoming exactly the kind of person who “ended” her previous life in the first place (morally gray characters gotta be my fav gang...).
I’ve greatly summarized the lore of a character with a complex history and, above all, personality because I’d like to divide the information into different posts. Right now, I’m planning on making character references and showing the world map, highlighting some key locations in the story. To make it easier to understand, the ingredients of this story would be: a kind of dystopian future, political drama, a bit of romance (because we all like that 🤭), and social criticism. I’m trying to make the characters interesting and charismatic enough to make a complex topic enjoyable and fun to read 🫰🏻
