I first asked this question 3 years ago, and wow it was such an amazing response I could never have imagined.
Hosting these group hiking trips & workshops for the past few years has been incredible in more ways than I would have imagined. Connecting people from all over the world to each other, to nature and to their creative inner being is a feeling I can’t describe. It brings me immense joy to hold this space for you all!
The biggest version of this group adventure is shaping up to be incredible. 14 days in the Himalayas, trekking the Annapurna Base Camp with a group of like minded (and honestly damn cool) people. Several of my past group workshop gals have booked to join the fun a second time!
PLUS have come on board to provide gear to each of our trekkers.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Do I need to be a photographer to join the trek?
While there is an emphasis on photography at the beginning of the trek to teach you some new skills of landscape photography, by no means do you need to be a photographer (or even have a camera!) The main purpose of this group trek is to immerse in nature, experience the majestic mountains and connect with similar people. You come as you are and leave with life changing memories.
Or, as quoted from a previous attendee “nothing could have prepared me for how transformative and beautiful this experience was going to be.”

Visited a few times over the years and was always left absolutely speechless every single day about the sheer beauty of the landscape here. I have never seen a place with more intense, golden orange light. A land with a wild energy, one that I had not felt since leaving Australia. I guess because in many ways it really did remind me of home - the flora, the beaches, the laid back friendly people.

Because truly, we are one and connected with nature - we always have been as humans. Our modern life in the western world loves to “other” the natural world around us, telling us from a young age that our worth in society is directly linked to our economic output. Selling us products to optimise, become more efficient, change and alter our appearance. Products and lies which are designed to isolate us from our community, pit us against each other in a search for infinite growth and becoming “rich”.
I was so fortunate to grow up in a family who loved the outdoors, camping, hiking and simply being curious about nature. Over the years of mental health struggles of anxiety, depression and panic disorders I returned to these roots. I would hike alone, explore the trails near our family home. Eventually taking in bigger peaks and finding an insatiable constant urge to go deeper, higher, wilder.
Whenever my mind was overwhelmed with expectations, fear and judgement I returned to hiking. It was the one place I didn’t feel so alone in the world. A deep knowing that the mountains, the trees, the flowers and the bugs were one with my energy and that I belonged there.
A knowing that I was enough, I am enough. Just as I am.

We hired a car to explore this vast area - from the Kiso valley up through to Kamikochi and Matsumoto. The lower mountains had the fresh early spring greens of new foliage, occasionally dotted with explosions of pink sakura. Higher up the trees were still gaining strength to bloom, their trunks lit up gold with the setting sun.
The mountains there had a particular energetic presence, one that felt different to that of the alps here. Perhaps feeling more ancient, more spiritual, a little more quiet and understated. I wonder if culture impacts the energy of nature, or if actually it’s the other way around – that the ancient natural energy of a space impacts the culture of the humans dwelling there over millennia.

While I enjoy exploring cities for their culture, nature has always been my biggest inspiration when traveling – I rather spend more time escaping in the mountains or the sea (although we looooved Kyoto my goodness).
Honestly, by this point of the trip I was pretty exhausted and happy to find quiet joy in these moments. I cherished these slower days together – our morning coffee while watering the plants of the BnB, spontaneously renting a surfboard when we realised we were staying directly outside the main local surf spot, evening beach strolls turned bush adventure as a local told us about a secret viewpoint (see last video for a giggle haha, whoops). Us, a quiet town, the sea and the mountains. Forever grateful for a partner who seeks escapism into nature as much as I do 🌀🎋

An ever constant reminder of the fluctuation of presence, the continuous cycle of energy coming and going. Sometimes it is grand, huge, super – rising proudly and taking up its deserved space in the sky. Turning heads, wide eyed. Other times it is a delicate sliver, most of its energy resting and hiding.
The moon is a reflection of our own energy cycles. Even when we feel small, delicate and fragile – we can rest easy with a knowing that it is a part of a continuous cycle. We will grow to our full energy presence again, feeling our full potential and glowing in a silver light for those around us.
Maybe we feel we matter less when we feel small, wanting to hide away in insignificance. But this vulnerability and fragility is often the bravest and most beautiful part of our energy cycles. Someone, somewhere will look up to that tiny sliver of a moon and smile at its presence. That they too feel hidden in shadow at that time.
We cannot be a moon in full energy at all times. I guess this is something we share across all of nature. Energy is cyclical. There is no rush or pressure to be a full moon at all times - because whichever phase you are in, you are in exactly the right place at the right time.

We spent the morning at Oshino Hakkai, strolling along the Sakura lined canals with historical traditional Japanese buildings. Honestly there were quite a few wide-eyed “is this real??” moments and glances looking at each other in disbelief. One of those fairytale places I’m not sure I fully appreciated at the time 🌸
There were of course quite a few people by mid morning to lunch, so I am grateful that we went so early in the morning for some peace. But that is the case with almost every wonderfully mind blowing place in Japan - a lot of other people have seen the same information as you. Some patience, mindfulness and positivity amongst lots of people help you see the joy in humans having fun as tourists.
