ALEX MĂLLER
âDavosâ
đGallery Cabinet
The presentation âDavosâ showcases a selection of works created between 2014 and 2017, the result of an intensive, investigative exploration of Ernst Ludwig Kirchnerâs photographic estate. It marks a turning point in Alex MĂŒllerâs oeuvre, where biographical, art-historical, and formal questions converge in a particular way. MĂŒller was less interested in the documentary content of the photographs than in their specific atmosphere: the fine tension between movement and stasis, and the quiet, almost fragile presence of a moment held still. In a radical formal decision, the series of small- and medium-format ink works initially concentrated solely on indigo and white. This deliberate self-restraint strips the motifs of narrative overlays and examines space, figure, and atmosphere in their purest essence. Thus, independent pictorial realities emergedâcondensations of mood and time, in which Kirchnerâs photographs serve merely as a catalyst, not as a template.

Join us from 6-8pm for the opening of our first solo exhibition with Yuri Yuan and her first one in Europe!
Yuri Yuanâs paintings gesture toward themes of geographical and emotional distance through carefully staged relationships between figures and their surroundings. Imbued with visual symbolism, her landscapes and domestic scenes become projections of interior psychological states. This new body of work investigates belonging and the meaning of âhomeâ for an artist whose roots extend across multiple places. It emphasizes the importance of passage over arrival, witness over judgment, in an age when life often seems to move faster than reflection.
Wanderlust showcases an artist who translates personal experiences of migration, movement, and memory into a visual language of metaphor and reflection. Engaging transcontinental art-historical traditions through a painterly lens, Yuan gives form to the quiet uncertainty of life between places. Poignant in their restraint, the works allow private memories to open onto broader questions of care, vulnerability, and belonging.

Yuri Yuan (b. 1996, Harbin, China) paints surrealist scenes featuring ambiguous and physically impossible figure-landscape relationships to explore existentialist themes of longing and loss. Through visual symbolism, metaphors, and magical realism, the artist explores the ways in which exterior landscapes become projections of her and her audienceâs interior psychological states.â

The opening will take place on Friday, June 12, from 6-8pm. The artist will be present.
Yuanâs recurrent motifs of distance and longing recall Caspar David Friedrichâs âWanderer Above the Sea of Fogâ and Gustave Courbetâs âBonjour, Monsieur Courbetââworks the artist encountered early in her career while visiting the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. In the spirit of wanderlust, the paintings in this exhibition function as visual records of a biography shaped by movement and displacement. Born in China, educated in Singapore and Chicago, and now based near New York City, Yuan explores the sensation of being âin-between.â Her works are characterized by precise layers of dry and saturated color, revealing the influence of Post-Impressionism, particularly Pierre Bonnard. This painterly approach is paired with a deliberate emotional restraint that runs through her iconography.

The empty boat appears as a symbol of transition between visible and invisible realities, between the known and the unknown. Surrounded by darkness, it becomes more than a physical object. A metaphor for the self, consciousness or an inner journey.
The figures, rendered with partly translucent paint and soft contours, resist a purely physical reading. Bradford leaves open whether they stand in water, float in space, or exist somewhere between material reality and inner experience. This spatial ambiguity transforms the scene into a threshold space between earth and water, body and mind, present and memory. One of them in the background, whose feet cannot be seen, seems to be sitting on a little cloud in the sky and looking down. This additionally reinforces this ambiguity. Their ghostly appearance and their uncertain spatial status leave open whether these four figures belong to the same reality or to different levels of memory and experience. Perhaps they are friends connected in spirit or representatives of long past generations of a family?
Bradford does not answer this question, but instead âNight Boatâ raises new questions. Who or what guides our actions? Do we follow a destiny? How are we shaped by our environment and experiences? And precisely therein lies an essential part of the poetic power of this painting.
All these elements transform the scene from a simple nightly gathering into a meditation on memory, transition, and the relationship between the visible world and a deeper, less tangible reality.

âHidden in Plain Sight. Anne Buckwalter in Conversation with Katherine Bradfordâ
âWhen Katherine Bradford stopped by Anne Buckwalterâs studio in Maine earlier this summer, Buckwalter was in the middle of finishing a new series of paintings. The two artists quickly fell into an easy conversation about bodies and the ways intimacy finds its way into art. They compared notes on growing up around purity culture, painting figures without faces or genitals, and how eroticism can be both radical and ordinary at the same time. Their talk moved the way their paintings do â back and forth between humor and seriousness, with a lot of curiosity in between. At one point Bradford teased Buckwalter about hiding erotic details in plain sight; later Buckwalter asked Bradford is she thought her own figures had secret erotic lives. Both painters have new shows opening in New York this fall â Buckwalterâs âLoverâs Knotâ at Uffner & Liu and Bradfordâs latest work at CANADA â but here, in the studio, the conversation was less about milestones and more about the shared joys and risks of making art.â
