There’s nothing like toddler hugs after a long hike....and the waterfall’s not half bad either ❤️🇨🇷❤️
We may not have had fireworks this holiday weekend, but the sky still lit up for us!

Over the 4th of July holiday we’re usually bouncing around family and friends in upstate NY, Boston, and Cape Cod. But with the pandemic this year extending border closures, we’re still “stuck” in Costa Rica - so we decided to make the best of it and take a mini-vacation to Nosara.

We found a cute Air B&B in Playa Guiones - which is an ex-pats paradise of an upscale surf town with surf shops, bike rentals, and yoga studies galore. You can find plenty of higher end food shops, restaurants, and hotels along the dirt roads that make up the town scattered between the seemingly endless choices of fresh juice bars, acia bowls, trendy food trucks and casual restaurants, all while retaining that rustic Costa Rica feeling. Most locals opt for ATVs to navigate the dirt roads that require multiple river crossings in the area rather than the golf carts that populate other ex-pat heavy towns.

Playa Guiones is a surfer’s paradise with a consistent wave break along the 3 mile beach with waves perfect or beginners at low tide and great for more experienced surfers at high tide. With all the surfer it may seem not to be a great beach for babies or toddlers - but it truly has something for everyone as there are several large tide pools along the left side of the beach where the water stays as flat as a lake and is perfect for the littles to safely splash around in.

We’re so happy we found this gem of a town - we’ll be back soon as it’s only a couple of hours from home!

Happy Father’s Day to the man who’s always up for an adventure! Kai and I are so lucky to have you - thank you for always being willing to head to the beach no matter how early it is, for always pulling the beach cart, for making the breakfast and coffee that keeps me going, and for always being up for a dance party with us! And most of all, thank you for being the best role model for Kai as to how a father should be!❤️❤️We love you!!❤️❤️
Have you ever found the perfect vacation spot?

We just had the best experience at a family run Air B&B in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica at
As this was one of our first ventures out since the COVID pandemic started we were impressed with how immaculately clean and professionally managed Villa Aragon was and wouldn’t hesitaste to recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay close to the beach here! The family that owns and manages the Villa was extremely welcoming, professional, and the property itself is gorgeous and a tropical paradise!

Even though the property is just off the beach, the pool was so lovely that we hung out there a lot (swipe to see!) since the beaches are still only open a few hours in the morning. The entire property is a tropical dream - we were welcomed to help ourselves to the star fruit and lime trees, saw a blue morpho butterfly flitting through the yard, and found brightly colored tree frogs after the rain.

As a toddler-friendly bonus the doors leading out to the pool had top locks so little hands couldn’t open the doors unexpectedly 🤗. We’ll hopefully be back soon!
Someone is SO happy the beaches are open!

Granted, the beaches throughout Costa Rica are only open between 5AM - 8AM for another few weeks, but we are taking full advantage of it! The air B&B we’re staying at has a beautiful private gated beach path down to Playa Negra so we’ve been bringing the little man down to dig in the sand and play soccer every morning in an are of the beach where there’s hardly anyone else around.

There’s more waves here than down the coast 5 minutes at Chino beach, which is better for smaller kids with calm tidal pools to play in. But this kid looks pretty happy right here, waves and all 🤷🏼‍♀️😂🤗.

Street art is everywhere in Puerto Viejo!

This funky beach town on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica has been totally worth the 8.5 hour drive across the country (even with a toddler in tow!). Hands down this has been our favorite beach town yet - you have your choice of black sand or seemingly endless light sandy beaches - with a Rasta-surfer-Caribbean vibe that complements the Tico “pura vida” lifestyle.

We rented bikes for the week as the roads alongside and between the beaches are flat, the roads are well maintained, and there’s almost as many bikes on the road as cars, which made me feel comfortable to ride with Kai. We logged an 11 mile ride today, stopping leisurely to take in views and grab a pipa fría (our toddler is currently obsessed with the cold coconuts sold roadside). 11 miles on a beach cruiser is way harder than my road bike for sure though, especially lugging this little man around!

Puerto Viejo is truly a Costa Rican paradise - if you’re looking for lush vibrant forests right next to the beach, this is it!!

Raised on Aloha.

Aloha means more than hello or goodbye. It is a feeling, a way of life. You do things WITH aloha - with love, compassion, and a mutual sense of respect. Living with aloha is having compassion for and caring for the the land and people around you with grace, kindness, and an open heart and home.

Our son was born on Maui and crawled and stumbled along the beaches with us every weekend, happily sitting and floating on our boards. This was my favorite hat of his that always brought smiles to locals and tourists alike as he played and ran down the beaches.

The events in the US the past few months has really made us closely re-examine how we’re actively trying to raise a good human who will be an ally, and who will live with aloha, just like he was born into it on Maui. Although we’re no longer residing in the land of aloha and endless rainbows, we wish to carry this mantra with us - to continue to live with aloha; to continue to raise our son on aloha, with aloha.

The world could use some more aloha right now. 🌈❤️🖤🤎🤍❤️🌈

Happy World Environment Day!! This year’s theme is “Celebrate Biodiversity” - which will forever make me think of Costa Rica🇨🇷. Did you know that Costa Rica only covers 0.03% of the Earth’s surface but has ~6% of the worlds biodiversity - all packed into a country roughly half the size of Ohio! Costa Rica is home to over 900 bird species alone - more than the entire US and Canada combined!

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. The air is alive with bird calls, the occasional sound of monkeys, and the forest is teeming with life everywhere you look - from the leaf cutter ants marching along the forest floor, to the orchids maintaining their footholds on tree trunks, to moss covered branches supporting hanging plants. It’s truly incredible - and bonus, also toddler hiking friendly with well maintained paths.

If you’re heading to the park - which is now open - make sure to call to make reservations as with new COVID regulations these are required to enter. And be sure to check our the cafe on the left side of the road entering the park - the sheer number and different types of hummingbirds there is unreal. Grab a cup of coffee and sit and watch them for a bit after your hike - you won’t regret it!! Another pro tip: Get a guide. Half of being able to spot birds is knowing their calls and/or where they’ve been recently seen nesting. Most guides will also have spotting scopes so you can see everything up close too from the safety of the trail.

Lungs of the earth.

When we were hiking in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve a couple of weeks ago I finally felt like I could take a deep breath and exhale all the tension of the past few months. It’s an amazingly peaceful place with tropical beauty all around you.

Now with all the protests rocking the US and the reminder (again) that all of us are not necessarily viewed the same under and before the law, I’ve been struggling to put my thoughts and feelings into words. And I’ve lost that feeling of having a breath of fresh air. But staying silent isn’t an option.

Black Lives Matter. Just like saying “Save the Rainforests!” doesn’t mean “forget all the other trees!”, we need to stand together and call attention to the specific struggles faced by black communities and individuals in the US - and work together to address them.

And hopefully, in time, we can all breathe freely.💞 If you’re at a loss for where to start, here’s a great list: Trust me, it’s worth the 3 seconds to copy & paste to read it - regardless of your racial background, country affiliation, or political leanings.

It can never hurt to even just expand your historical knowledge or see a different viewpoint with one of the recommended readings from the list. 💞

Toucans!!
.
Excited yells filled the car as we were driving down the road trying to find cell service - we had been turned away from the entrance to the Monteverde park where we had gone hiking two days before because now you can’t enter without reservations. But there’s no cell service at the entrance gate, so we had to drive a mile down the road until we got service to put our names on the list (which they immediately told us to come in and drive back up - pura vida).
.
But if that hadn’t happened we wouldn’t have seen this guy fly across the road. And so starts the madness - my husband after 10 years together knows the drill - pull the car over, crazy wife jumps out with her camera, and then we’ll regroup once he finds a safe place for the car. (Side note - I knew he was the one when on our first vacation we came across young wild stallions play flighting and rearing up and I jumped out of our rental Jeep - and left the door open causing our only road map to blow away in the middle of an island where there was no cell service. And he somehow found this endearing and married me anyways haha).
.
We were all so excited to see a rainbow toucan - officially a Keel billed toucan - relaxing in a tree just off the main road up to Monteverde. Even Kai, our 3 year old, could easily see it in the tree it was so close!

In short, I’m glad we didn’t have reservations - because sometimes what seems like a setback actually leads you down a better path. And we were hiking in the park within a few minutes anyhow. But it was definitely MUCH busier than a few days ago, so if you’re planning to go - especially on a weekend - I would highly recommend making reservations a few days in advance even!
