A few weeks ago, I was invited by to meet prison officer Blake and honestly, I didn’t really know what to expect.
Before going in I didn’t know loads about the Prison Service but after speaking to Officer Blake I came away with a proper respect for what prison officers do every single day.
It’s not just about keeping people safe even though that’s obviously a massive part of the job. It’s about judgement, communication, staying calm when things get tense and working as a team to help people get ready for life after custody.
Coming from the forces, I know how important those skills are. Discipline, patience, backing your team and reading a situation properly. Prison officers use all of that and more.
Officer Blake was brilliant and it was amazing to hear how people from all different backgrounds can bring their own life experience to the job.

I’ve finally had a day where I could reflect on the last month, it’s been a crazy one! A couple weeks back, was my last day in the forces and I’ve not had much time to process it. I served for 6 years, joined at 16 went in a boy and came out a man. 👏🏼
Not only am I grateful for the friends I’ve made but also, the opportunities I’ve had. I learned a trade, learnt to box, played football and so many other sports, travelled the world and I’m only 23 🤯 (got to go on a game show too 😂)
My time had come to an end and I was ready to start the next chapter of my life, luckily everything fell into place and here we are! ✌🏼
