Harris Tweed Hebrides is proud to announce that our Chairman, Ian Angus Mackenzie, has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2026 New Year Honours List for services to the Harris Tweed® industry and his contribution to Scottish Textiles over his 50-year career.
Starting in the industry as a weaver, Ian developed a deep, practical understanding of the hand-woven skill that defines Harris Tweed®. This grounding in craftsmanship informed his subsequent work as a weaving tutor and lecturer, where he played an important role in passing on technical knowledge to the next generation of weavers.
He later became involved in the development of the Harris Tweed Act of Parliament 1993 as Secretary of the Weavers Union. As the first Chief Executive Officer of the newly formed Harris Tweed Authority, he helped establish the governance and legal frameworks that continue to safeguard the industry globally.
As founding Director and first Chief Executive Officer of Harris Tweed Hebrides, Ian led the company and the wider industry through a period of renewal, combining respect for heritage manufacturing techniques with modern luxury standards.
Now serving as Chairman of Harris Tweed Hebrides, he continues to support the company’s core values of legacy, luxury, and low impact, ensuring that Harris Tweed® remains relevant and respected while remaining true to its origins.
Reflecting on the honour, Ian says:
“I feel greatly honoured by the award of the MBE. I would like to pay tribute to, and thank, all those who worked with me in my various roles throughout these last 50 years in The Harris Tweed® industry.
It is a very poignant time for us as a family as my wife, Zena, passed away very recently. She was my help and strong support all my career. We are grateful that she knew about the award and was very happy about it.
These years at Harris Tweed Hebrides have been very enjoyable and I wish the company, and the wider industry, continued success in the years to come.”

The Harris Tweed Hebrides team was honoured to attend the spectacular #DiorCruise 2025 show and represent the 70 mill workers and 120 home-weavers all involved in the creation of our beautiful Harris Tweed® fabrics. We were extremely proud to see our handwoven creations feature so prominently across the collection. Maria Grazia Chiuri’s use of local craftsmanship in her collection promotes traditional Scottish textiles on a global stage.
From the outset, mariagraziachiuri demonstrated a deep appreciation for the Harris Tweed® industry, curating bespoke designs with a profound respect for the artisans and their heritage.
Maria Grazia Chiuri said “What sets this fabric apart is the unique process where the wool is dyed before spinning, enabling a rich blend of colours to merge into the yarn, resulting in a textile of remarkable depth and complexity. We created together a series of colours such as “Heather”, which opened the show, inspired by natural palettes of wild Scottish landscapes.”
