January. Cold. Wet. Possible snow.
So we hosted a hardtail community ride.
Pedalled up Seymour, dropped into Severed D, and let the mountain decide what kind of day it was going to be. Turns out winter riding is less about perfect conditions and more about good people and realistic expectations.
Hardtails. Single speed. Rigid fork. North Shore. Year round. Hard to beat!
Thanks to everyone who showed up and rode with us. If you want Meg’s photos, shoot us a DM!
Always grateful for the support from and and for the trail work and advocacy.

Will it be as warm as our August ride? Nope! But we’re willing to bet it’ll be just as fun and well-attended, because we’ve noticed this phenomenon that as the weather gets worse, more hardtails come out to play. Let’s see if we’re right!

Hit up if your bike needs some TLC. We’ll be bringing our Tyaughton in single-speed form.

Ride at Your Own Risk Disclaimer
At Hardtail Life, we’re all about fun, friendship, and good times on two wheels. If you decide to join us for a ride, please know it’s 100% at your own risk. Mountain biking can be risky — crashes, mechanicals, and trail surprises are all part of the adventure.
By joining a ride with us, you accept full responsibility for yourself, your gear, and your decisions on the trail. Hardtail Life, Steve, and Meg can’t be held responsible for any injury, damage, or loss that might happen during or after a ride.
Know your limits, wear your helmet, and keep the vibe positive. We’re here to laugh, pedal, and enjoy the ride — just remember, your safety is your call.
2025 surprised us in the best ways. Meg podiumed the Back Forty. Steve rode a bike park on a rigid fork. We took our single speeds up Lord of the Squirrels. And we shared so many trails with the hardtail crew. Check out our YouTube channel for the full video!
We’re rolling into 2026 with more adventures planned and proud to keep representing and trusting with all the wrenching and coaching.
Where should we ride next year? Sunshine Coast again? Vegas? Smithers? Tell us your ideas.

Our Lord of the Squirrels descent (on our Tyaughton steel hardtails, with or without rigid forks and single speeds) is live on our channel! If you missed part 1, make sure to catch the climb as we made our way up to the alpine. We ride the famous Lord of the Squirrels trail, followed by Chipmunk Rebellion, Industrial Waste, and out Danimal Middle. It was one heck of a ride, and we’d love to share that with you! Big shoutout to for leading the way, for all the trail work, and for keeping our bikes running. 🫶

Costumes were optional for the Essential Cycles Halloween ride… but Meg showed up with wings and four riders arrived as actual chickens.
Expresso, Lower Expresso, Baden Powell, and pizza at the shop after. Zero wing malfunctions. Chickens rode way too well.
Big thanks to for hosting the chaos and keeping our steel Tyaughtons rolling.

This is how I injured myself without crashing.

About a month ago, I was rocking my Tyaughton hardtail, but with a RSD rigid fork. I’ve been running this setup most of the year, but due to work and life circumstances, I found myself not mountain biking for almost a month - the longest I’ve ever not mountain biked since I discovered it. Anyways, it was a friend’s birthday ride, so it was the perfect excuse for me to hit the trails, since I justified that it wasn’t “just for me.”

I was pretty chill for most of the ride, but for this one section, where I didn’t have anyone to follow and I was feeling like a dog off leash, I just sent it with the biggest smile on my face. It wasn’t until the next day (and the following two weeks), that I really paid for it. My theory is that, since I wasn’t riding much, the muscles needed to ride a rigid mountain bike had softened, and I sent it too hard for my body. Riding rigid (or, mountain biking in general) is a physical activity, and I wasn’t doing it in a way that respected where my body and muscles were at.

After this realization, I decided to swap back to the suspension fork my hardtail came with. This past weekend, I had the privilege of riding with some friends that I haven’t seen in a while. It was coincidence that we rode similar trails, so I thought I’d just throw them up back-to-back. Originally, I was curious how much faster I was going to be going on my suspension fork (since I’m following someone pretty quick), but I was surprised that I was actually going about the same speed on the rigid fork as well! Now, a quick disclaimer, in the full clip, you’d see that on the rigid fork, I stopped to shake out my arms and I slowed down considerably afterwards, but this section here? Oh man! 😅
Sometimes the best line is your second one.
Steve takes on this tricky Upper Griffen feature on Mount Fromme — wet roots, tight gaps, and a whole lot of stubbornness.
Rigid. Single-speed. Steel Knolly Tyaughton.
Supported by and, who somehow keep this nonsense rolling.

The wind off the coast was cold and the rain pelted down. I was at 37 km with only 5 km more to go but it seemed impossible. My blood sugar dropped to LOW and my legs didn’t really work well if I stopped for too long so I just kept going. I kept thinking that Steve and the kids are at the end.

It’s the single speed way, to just keep going at whatever speed you can go at.

Seeing Steve, Audrey, Mason, Taylor & Gwenyth at the finish was one of the best feelings I have ever experienced.

I felt so supported and that my run was a Victory for the whole family.

Thank you to all the volunteers and for the for putting on such a great marathon!

Yup, we're that mountain biking couple. Neither of us are particularly great at riding, but we sure know how to have fun. 😘✌️
