What nobody really tells you is how rare these encounters actually are.
I went down to La Ventana for one reason: ORCAS.
For almost two weeks we went out every single day. 8, 9, sometimes 10 hours on the water. Every morning full of hope. Every evening the same answer:
“No orcas today.”
And honestly, after hearing that enough times, you start to believe it’s just not going to happen.
On our last days we were still out there searching. Four hours on the water. Nothing. Then suddenly, far away:
An orca.
A few seconds later they were gone again.
We spent another couple of hours looking for them, but nothing.
At that point we were already heading back. I had pretty much accepted that we’d come all this way and leave without seeing them properly.
And then, out of nowhere, they surfaced right in front of us.
Three orcas.
For maybe 1,5 minutes they just cruised past us underwater, Calm and so close that I could have reached out and touched one.
I’ve seen orcas before in Norway, but this was different.
It’s hard to explain what that felt like. For a moment, everything else disappeared. No thoughts, no stress, no distractions. Just me, underwater, watching the animal I had dreamed of seeing for years.
And that’s what made it so special. Not just the encounter itself, but everything that came before it. Almost two weeks of searching, waiting, hoping, and hearing “no orcas today.”
Those 90 seconds were worth every single hour spent looking for them.
Some memories fade.
