I made it to 40!

What a blessing it is to be alive and well, surrounded by friends that love you back, surrounded by so much art treasures and inspiration, to be able to see the beauty not only in my dreams, to feel, to laugh, to dance, to love!

I’ve heard a phrase recently: “Story is a pattern interrupted”. My life is a story of a story of such interruptions, but I guess that the main twists (and the second main character?) are yet to come.

I feel like I have so much to tell and to introduce to the world, and it’s the only thing that keeps me going. I’m optimistic for what is yet to come and I’m grateful for what is.

It’s nearly impossible to summarise in words all the experiences of the past 40 years, but I will start trying (in a shape of a book, maybe?).

I’m so happy that all of you are here to share with me the most precious things you have — your time and attention. Thank you from the bottom of my soul, and I’m wishing everyone to embrace the interruptions of any kind courageously and beautifully! I’m learning together with you.

Love,
Hanna

And thank you for these stunning portraits of me in the last days of my 30s!

do we live in the world or does the world live in us?

it’s getting progressively harder to figure things out without turning the gaze into poetry. because the everyday life feels prosaic. so, at least, in my dreams I’m allowed to dream.

the most beautiful streets of the most romantic city fall into a trap of being familiar. it’s impossible to enjoy even something you love as much as you did in the first time.

some say we only live once. others say we live forever.
some say you have to live as if every day is your last one, others say — enjoy life and stay open as if every day is your first.

I’m trying to be funny to avoid being pathetic.
I flirt, therefore I am.

I leave the house early to enjoy the sun and the magnolias in bloom, but the weather here is so sassy. you can’t keep up fighting with it, even if you hold an umbrella as a sword.

staying inside is not an option, because the spring lures you into its bittersweet deceit, promising the most unimaginable pleasures called “the new circle of life”.

and I willingly fall into its spell each time.

Kristina was 22, when she fles the war with her dog Theo.

We met through a mutual friend while I was working on a project “na chuzhiy zemli” (‘on a foreign land’).

Kristina invited me for tea in her house, we played with a dog and I started recording her interview. She seemed very reasonable, articulated and confident, but also tender and cute. We talked about her journey to the Netherlands, her work and life in general. I asked a question about her family, and saw that Kristina was a bit confused by it, and didn’t have much to say in the beginning.

Her boyfriend came back home and interrupted us, but in a few minutes we returned to our conversation.

I proceeded with a question on a different topic, but Kristina said we didn’t finish talking about her family.

Then she became a bit quiet. And then she told me the story that happened just a month prior to our interview.

I invite you to read carefully.
thank you for sharing your story 🫀

I feel much older than my age. This is because you start thinking about many things that your peers do not. In my case, an important part of this process was that I had to start living without my parents.

When you are left alone, you realize that you have to grow up much faster than others. You need to think about housing, what is left, and how to move forward with it.

Many people my age simply do not think about this because their parents make all the decisions for them; they get money on their card, their education is paid for. I do not have a European passport, so my education would have cost me 10,000 euros per year – a huge amount of money that I did not have.

Currently, I live solely on what I earn each month. I have no parents: my mother passed away six years ago, and my father five years ago. After these events, my life changed drastically. At the age of 15, I was left on my own and began to understand how the world works. I had to learn how to budget just to survive.

The war, in turn, forces you to adapt to new circumstances once again: understanding what you need to do to survive.

But despite everything, the war helped me change. It made me more confident, I am more open to people, I read more, and I like the direction I am heading in.

This is the first story from my ongoing project about young Ukrainian refugees who fled to Europe and tried to build their future from scratch away from home.
I’m proud to (finally) show you some photos I took for the wonderful movie Forever Forever in December 2021, two months before the full scale invasion.

The movie is premiering around Europe now and you can follow them and, of course, go and see it in your local cinema.

I am so grateful for the memories that we made during those long cold winter shooting shifts, and for the absolute creative freedom that the movie crew gave me to do my job exactly how I want it to be done. Thank you for the trust ❤️

And once again, I hope everyone will have a chance to see very soon ✨
I am always so so happy to receive your messages about my book 💚

But, because the proper book presentation event is still on its way, I decided to record this video to elaborate on some ideas and visual choices that we included into the design together with amazing Edwin van Gelder 💚

The book is truly a collaborative work, and at this point it’s hard to tell who came up with which idea, but I’m so happy that I trusted Edwin and he trusted me in the process.

And in the moments of desperation I always had my editor Michiel Schwarz on a distance of a one phone call. Sometimes we talked for hours and I feel like I owe him money for therapy ✨😁

Please watch this video if you have the book already, it will be much more interesting to open it again after this reels.

Please watch this video if you don’t have a book yet — I am sure you will order it straight away after 💚

Just DM me, and it’s yours!

A huge shoutout to the author of this clip — amazing Ukrainian content creator and friend Masha who has a talent to turn mobile videos into movies.

And thanks for hosting us (they have great atmosphere and coffee!)
