What happens when a photographic image becomes an etched copper plate? Copper photogravure grew out of William Henry Fox Talbot’s experiments in the 1850s and was refined by Karel Klíč in 1879. Unlike halftone photo-etching, which builds tones from dots, photogravure etches the plate at varying depths to create rich, subtle tonal transitions.
Since I began teaching myself the process in 2023, I’ve fallen in love with the depth it can bring to an image. I’ve also become increasingly aware of the importance of finding an alternative to the traditional dichromate sensitiser.
Over the past year, I’ve been experimenting with DAS and FAC, making my own gelatine tissue and testing how these materials respond on copper. I’m excited to share what I’ve learnt so far.
The two-day workshop takes you through the full process, with hands-on experience at each stage. The four-day workshop gives you time to repeat and refine the process, explore the technical details in greater depth, and try additional printing techniques.
Each workshop is limited to four participants, with plenty of time to ask questions and work closely together.

I originally designed this T-shirt for myself,to express my identity as a printmaker and that feeling so many of us know: I MUST PRINT!
Over the past two years, more and more people have asked if they could buy one. I’ve also made a few for printmaker friends, and it made me so happy when some of them told me it had become their favourite T-shirt.
And here’s master lithography printmaker Simon Burder wearing the T-shirt at work, it looks absolutely brilliant on him!
Made for printmakers everywhere, it has a relaxed, gender neutral fit. And it’s made from high-quality 260gsm heavyweight cotton. Each one is screen-printed by hand with durable fabric ink. I’ve worn mine for two years, and the print still looks good!

Installation, size: 5.1x 2 meters
It grew out of my interest in time and memory, and in how a city slowly becomes part of personal experience. This work took shape during my stay, through daily observation of Shanghai.
I chose plane trees because they are inseparable from the city’s streets. Winter is when they feel most honest to me. As their bark peels away, dense and scarred textures emerge, where ageing and renewal coexist. I photographed an entire street of plane trees along Dingxi Road and combined fragments from seven different trees into one continuous form, one tree made from many lives. Numbers written and carved into the innermost bark, left by those who care for the trees, revealed that the trees are quietly recorded and remembered.
Realised through the process of intaglio printmaking, the work takes the form of two long plane trees in copper and paper. The copper tree acts as the matrix, while the burnt and eroded paper tree appears as its print, reflecting how lived experience becomes memory, partial, fragile, and constantly shifting.
