LETS CAKE! Every year, not only do my children grow a year older, but they grow a year bolder with their birthday cake requests. As a client this makes them a little annoying, but as a dad, how can I refuse. This year marks the TENTH year (wtf) of Cake Night and we will be making what is (I’m now realising as I google images) a very difficult pirate ship from a manga comic that must have large chocolate sails. In my experience, nothing a single malt and overconfidence can’t solve. I’m off to the hardware store, but I’ll see you in stories tonight for anyone who wants to follow along should you ever need to build the same niche cake for your 12 year old 🙂🎂🥃❤️
Look I know a lot of people are clamouring for what Hames Highlight™️ has been for April, and even though we have 2 days left I’m happy to call it. Competitive month for content, the family trip to Japan threw up some great contenders but I have to award it to the Sushi Racing in Tokyo at the 7th innings break in the baseball. I think Aussie sports codes have been caught napping on this one and by finals this year we should hopefully at least have children doing Meat Pie Racing.

Honourable mentions: Disneyland, cafe that makes your pet out of latte foam and making my children kind of re enact Gap Year by taking them robot fighting. Good luck May!
When we built Old Mates, we wanted it to be the real Aussie Embassy of New York. A place for everyone. A home for Australian culture right here in the city.

One year in, we’re incredibly grateful for the journey and the community that’s grown around this pub.

So cheers to all of you.
The locals and the travellers, the singles, the couples, the grommets, the four-legged friends, and the partners who backed us from day one.

Cheers to the shenanigans, the performers, the prime ministers who’ve popped in, the bell ringers, the pie makers, the parma lovers, the schooner scorers, the first daters, and the second chances that somehow turned into all-nighters.

This pub only works because of you.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of the first year of Old Mates.
Here’s to many more. 🍻🇦🇺
After months of non-stop battles over the government mandated podcasting break, our first episode of 2026 is out tomorrow!
The Foster Blakes Anything But Clothes party. FULL send on the outfits by everyone made it a night to remember. This is but a sample, way better captured over at. Even though if anyone dropped anything they could never pick it up again because no one could bend down, the fun was unmatched. My outfit was 100% Hame-made from boxes we had delivered to our house from my online shopping enthusiasm (about half a days worth of deliveries), and cost me a ferocious amount of glue gun burns. But for me, it was in a dress made from The Dressmaker DVD’s. 5 ⭐️ (All the best pics from )
Im a big fan of inventing a family tradition. A wise man once said to me “most traditions aren’t that old” and it’s a bloody good rule I think. Do it once, do it again the next year, then by the third year it’s “the law” and you have to make space for it in the calendar (to my wife’s displeasure this law also works for golf trips). We started doing this with our kids where we have a solo parent/kid adventure each year, for each kid. It started with me (buying all the top of the line gear for) camping with each kid 5 or so years ago, and has evolved. Sometimes it’s one night, sometimes a few days. Just got back from an awesome adventure exploring Norfolk Island with my boy (my daughter and I did a houseboat earlier in the year… also amazing, far more drawing cute cats on that trip). Not sure if I’ll get in trouble from the locals for sharing how good their quiet slice of lush island paradise is, but Norfolk is gorgeous. Cows have right of way, everyone drives tiny trucks, the locals are incredibly friendly and it’s an island custom to wave at literally every driver you pass. We biked across the whole island using an e-bike and a clothes line as a tow rope for big hills, stargazed, learnt some history since he was cutting school for the trip, and as fate would have it they have a golf course which was crazy cos we bought our clubs! I know it’s not always easy to do this stuff, or make the time, but I’ll forever be grateful we did, I bloody love these trips 🙂
If someone told me as a kid growing up in Melbourne that I would one day get to be the voice of a giant LEGO build in the Myer Christmas Windows I would have screamed “Help! Help! This guys lying about being a time traveller!” and run away. And boy would I feel guilty now because it turned out that guy was RIGHT!

If you’re in Melbourne get the family down to see six windows that tell an Aussie version of the LEGO Night Before Christmas brought to life by me. To be fair, I only do the narrating of the poem, but let’s not split hairs, team effort is a team effort is a team effort.

And we’re on again. Tonight in accordance with sacred lore, I shall do what it takes to make the 8th birthday cake my amazing daughter (but slightly tricky cake customer) has her heart set on. It’s an LOL doll (you’re not expected to know this doll), with a giant rainbow plait in her hair, on a catwalk, with lights, in a one shoulder pink ballgown, and her handbag swings. Who knows how this one’s gonna go but I do know being in the wrong state today was an interesting schedule move but I also know I have a secret weapon: whiskey and overconfidence! See you about 8 (9?) in stories if you feel like joining me. Let’s cake some dreams come true 🎂💕🥃
We've searched the galaxy for the greatest LEGO Masters, and they're ready to fight it out.

#LEGOMastersAU | Starts tonight 7.00pm on and
Cake night is TONIGHT! As per Family Lore, I must make whatever cake my children choose (and they’re now old enough to mess with me, let’s be honest) and this year for my sons 11th birthday it’s a doozy. It’s him, in futuristic armour, and weapons, with a sword, that moves and is to “slice through a giant number 11”. Also our cats are in the mix design wise. Regardless, it’s a lot of moving parts for a “cake” but if I know one thing, it will be attacked with over confidence and magic juice (🥃) tonight from about 7 (maybe 8) on my stories. I’m feeling that wonderful mix of thinking it actually might not be too hard this year yet at the same time, I know that thought gets me in trouble every year. Exciting. LETS CAKE!!
